Digital Ressurection
an excerpt

A nurse walked in, checked his IV, made sure he was comfortable and was about to leave when Arnold called to her "Wait, Nurse.. what happened to me? Why did I collapse at work? Was it the air? I never liked the air in that place, always stale."
"Sorry" she said "I don't honestly know, Dr. Wong will be in shortly with some answers, I think they are just waiting for some last test results."
"Thankyou" he said as he layed back in his bed. He sat there, relaxing, looking out the window from time to time when suddenly the door opened, and two doctors came through, one he somewhat recognized from early and concluded that this was probably Dr. Wong, the second was a woman and she introduced herself as Dr. Thompson.
"Hello" Arnold greeted them.
"Mr. Mallory" Dr. Wong began "We need to discuss with you what happened today. At work today you passed out, witnesses said you hadn't been feeling well at all."
"Thats correct" Arnold said, unsure where this was going.
"The paramedics brought you here, and we performed a series of tests, I'm afraid we are not done. However I do have some bad news to give to you."
Arnold sat up slightly in his bed, he was suddenly concerened. It's never good when a doctor mentions he has bad news for you.
"It appears as though you have lung cancer"
"Lung cancer?" Arnold said shocked, "well thats not good, not good at all!" Arnold was beside himself, unsure how to take this news. Was he supposed to cry? yell? get frustrated? break something? In the movies the patients always seemed to rip the I.V. out of their arm and storm out. Arnold glanced at the I.V. in his arm and decided that it was probably there for a good reason, and that ripping it out may hurt.
"Are you sure? How can you be sure if you have to do more tests?" He accused the doctor. "I'm only 36. 36 year olds don't get cancer, 45 year olds, 50 year olds, they get cancer. I'm too young. You must be wrong." He was rambling, and he knew he was rambling but he couldn't stop. "I've never smoked a day in my life, I avoid smokers, nasty habit that. Smoking, I mean, with all of today's information about smoking, the addiction, the smell, the yellow teeth, the... the.. various health problems. Why would anyone smoke? Disgusting habit." he was getting away from his Cancer issue, but the doctor just watched him go on, knowing that Arnold would eventually tire himself and be ready to listen.
"Lung Cancer comes from smoking right? So I can't have it, no, thats not possible. Doctor's and their 'tests'." He harumphed, and that left a somewhat awkward feel in the air. Dr. Wong waited a moment before deciding to speak. "Mr. Arnold, I understand your shock at the news, yes we do have a few more tests to do, but they are more to see how far the cancer has spread, how we can best treat you and so forth, we would not tell you this news if we weren't sure of your condition. As for smoking, indeed Lung cancer is among the most common form of cancer to come from smoking, but one does not need to smoke to get Lung cancer, often it is just the luck of the draw." When he saw Arnold's twisted expression he quickly corrected himself. "The 'bad' luck of the draw, as it were."
"So now what? Do I just lay in this hospital bed until I die? Is that what my life will be now?" Arnold said annoyed.
