In Sanity's Shadow
an excerpt
DONE! So now I can waste the time typing up half a page of this stuff...
"What were you - who was - Carl?" Wil's pleading eyes fixed on his face.
Carl groaned, sat up. "You remember this afternoon, I asked you if you could see something?"
"Yes." Wil was frowning slightly, no longer looking so despairing. "It wasn't there."
"Not in this dimension." Carl pushed his hair back from his face again, corners of his lips turned down in concentration. "Wil, there are lots of different universes - you remember that theory from that Terry Pratchett book, that everything that can happen, happens somewhere?" Wil nodded, still looking confused, so Carl continued. "Well, that couldn't be true for small decisions, such a thing couldn't happen, but the big changes-" He moved his hand, continued talking; Carli moved hers quickly to be touching him again, but missed a bit of what he was saying, "-would have their own seperate dimensions. These would move about randomly, but if two that were very similar grew close, say, ours and one where someone else died - then, two people who were close enough could talk to each other, that kind of thing, across dimensions." Wil seemed to understand this - which was good, because Carli had no clue what he was talking about. Smiling, Carl took Wil's hand, held it tightly, looked at her. "Love, I'd like you to meet Carli."
Wil gave a startled gasp, following Carl's gaze and apparently seeing something himself. "What - why-" To his credit, he didn't stay distracted by this random miracle for long. "She looks like you," he murmured.
