Synopsis:
Elena travels to Scotland for a contract to paint family portraits. While there her life is threatened, she finds new romance, and learns about family feuds.
Excerpt:
‘Wow, just look at those ruins; they’re magnificent. Whatever were they?’
The words were out of her mouth before she realised she’d spoken them aloud. Donald’s eyes stared into hers from the driver’s mirror. He smiled.
‘You don’t want to know too much about them, Miss. They are the ruins of the old manse. The only thing to say is that when you see them, you know there’s only about half an hour’s drive to go.’
Elena found herself following the buildings, twisting herself round in her seat to catch a last glimpse of them silhouetted against the late afternoon sky, before they rounded a bend and they were lost from sight
‘Please call me Elena, Donald. I’m going to be seeing a lot of you I’m sure in the next few months, so we don’t want to stand on ceremony.’
‘Of course, if that’s OK with you.’
‘Why did you say I shouldn’t find out too much about them? That’s just made me more curious.’ She didn’t add that she’d felt a cold chill pass through her, even though she couldn’t take her eyes off them.
