As soon as he walked through the door he knew something was wrong. Cautiously he walked into the living room, he glanced around searching for some hint of what it might be. He laid his briefcase and trench coat on the couch and continued his search. Near the back of the house he bent down to pick up something shiny from the ground. There he found not only a diamond earring, one from a set that he had given his wife the year before for their seventh anniversary (she would never have dropped it, and if she did she would most certainly have spent the whole day scouring the house until she found it), but also what appeared to be a single drop of blood.
