The sparrow ruffles its ice-threatened feathers and the branch lists slightly in the gusty October morning. October the first, year of our lord two-thousand three, to be precise. The sun's beam had not yet breached the morning's thick mail of fog and encircling clouds, nor had consciousness pricked the bubble of our dearest Miranda's world-weary dreaming.
