Synopsis: Getting Real
Can't find a job? Move to Brazil. That's at least what Olivia Bennett's family did in the name of family togetherness. In the beginning of her sophomore year her parents uprooted her and her younger sister from small town New Jersey to big city Brazil. Olivia's Dad may have seamlessly transitioned into his new role overnight, but for Olivia the move is much harder. Despite being a well-seasoned traveler, Olivia is homesick. After all she knows no one in Brazil, can't speak the language, doesn't like the food, and is pretty sure she's going to be kidnapped in her sleep. Attending Graded, an American School in Sao Paulo, gives Olivia a sense of belonging as she officially becomes a TiCK, a Third-Culture Kid. No longer American, and not quite Brazillian, Olivia finds who she really is... herself.
Excerpt: Getting Real
Gwen stirs in my lap and after she blinks the sleep out of her eyes, she asks the age old Bennett family question, "Where am I?"
Oh how to answer that? Emotionally? Hell. Geographically? France. Physically? A hotel lobby where the staff keeps asking me if there is anything they can do to make my stay more pleasant. Each time I hold back my frustration and try not to tell them that unless they can get me on the next flight back to New Jersey, then the answer is no. There is nothing they can do. I settle for the easiest answer, "Paris".
Gwen's brown eyes roll and she yawns. "Oh. Did I miss dinner?"
"Nope" I say as I pull myself up to a standing position. I grab her hand and go to the front desk to do what I do best. Order room service.
