Winning Kelli's Heart
an excerpt

The First Meeting Between Kelli Freebird and Adrian Bauer:

The most he could do was stomp up the stairs , a very two-year-old thing to do, but it was something to let some of his anger out. He was three-quarters of the way upstairs when the front door opened. He was curious, but too preoccupied with fulfilling his stomping act that he simply finished the last seven or so steps he had to go. He was mumbling to himself, complaining about how unfair this whole affair was. The next thing he knew, there were footsteps on the stairs behind him. He was still grumbling, cursing the vindictive Mrs. Freebird and her evil plans for his demise.

"Excuse me!" he heard a somewhat familiar voice say behind him. He turned and was met with blinding red hair, piercing, electric green eyes and a disgusted look on the face of the girl who had played the part of the prince on stage at the carnival.

Adrian looked stunned.

'What on earth do you think you are doing, talking trash about my momma?"

Adrian blinked and raised his eyebrows. "Umm..." was all he could muster.

"You jerky little brat," she said, appalled. She shook her head and snapped, "You movie stars think that you know everything, that you are all that, that everyone should treat you special because you are famous. You disgust me."

Her hateful remarks stabbed him in the gut. "Well, I should be treated better than THIS!" he retorted in a hoarse whisper.

"And yet you are afraid to say it so you can be heard."

"I don't car what you think about me," he spat. "I already have to work that stupid community service, and then your mother throws in laundrey and and cooking! You you thought YOU were disgusted."

"Whoever said that being famous was next to godliness was obviously born famous and given too much attention. If you ask me, being famous is next to nothing if you can't keep your head straight and keep sober enough to have the common sense to know that STEALING someone else's CAR is more than just stupidity."

That one went in like a dagger. Adrian recoiled. "Well, whoever thought that acting in front of a small town full of people would ever make you somebody was obviously an escapee from a phsyciatric ward."

She took in a breath. "I'd rather be Kelli Freebird, acting in front of a town that loves me and will pick me up when I fall, than be broadcasted on TV and swooned over for my looks and lines and be empty, broken, and lonely any day."

"Who says I'm lonely?" he reacted with alarm.

"The one who immediately got defensive the moment someone accused him of being so." Once she had said it, she turned around and briskly flew down the stairs.

Adrian stood at the top, dumbfounded. A few minutes passed as he quietly rolled over what Kelli had just accused him of. Then he quietly turned to the door which lead to his borrowed room, entered, and silently closed the door behind him.
