The first day of school has always been a very surreal blur. I have had a lot of first days in my life. First day of Kindergarten; a boy peed in the sandbox and we weren’t allowed to play in it for a month. First day of middle school, I ate lunch at a table by myself because I still hadn’t really made friends with anyone. First day of high school, Timothy Conner ran up and kissed me. It was my first kiss ever. First day of college was a stressful blur. I didn’t know that you were supposed to do reading assignments before the first day even begins. But today, this is a true first.
I’m thirty-three years old today and it’s my first day of graduate school. I finally decided that waiting over 5 years for grad school was long enough. I got married immediately after undergrad. He was my “college sweetheart.” We met on the freshman walk; it’s a walk they send you on during your freshman year and you get to know the person next to you. We had a whirlwind romance. No, I mean that literally. It started as a whirlwind and ended as a hurricane. The divorce was finalized last month. I never imagined I’d be divorced so soon. Then again, when I was 8 and playing “house,” I imagined everything as ‘perfect.’ Kinda funny to find out that nothing plays out the way you thought they would at 8. We still talk and occasionally see each other, but its best this way.
