‘A school…’
Esta downed the rest of her whisky and fixed Kia with her cold, penetrating gaze. ‘What about it?’
Kia stared at her in disbelief. ‘You blew up a school.’ She spoke slowly, shock beginning to set in.
Esta gave a harsh laugh ‘Yes, I blew up a school filled with innocent little children, go ahead and tell me what a cold hearted bitch I am.’
‘You’re insane.’ Kia’s voice wavered as she curled her hands into fists. ‘Your really are insane.’
‘An eye for an eye.’ Esta began,
‘they were children!’ Kia’s voice rose an octave as she continued to glare at the older woman.
‘They were children.’ Esta put on a mack baby voice ‘honey, get a grip, this is a war we’re fighting.’
Kia stood up so quickly that she knocked over her seat and sent it clattering to the ground. ‘Don’t you see?’ She almost screamed. ‘There wouldn’t be a war if your people didn’t keep turning everyone against us!’
‘What would you have us do? Make peace with the humans?’ Esta asked, pouring herself another drink. ‘Pretend that the past five hundred years never happened. That they didn’t lock us away and experiment on us? That they didn’t treat us like slaves? That they didn’t kill us just for the hell of it?’ She downed her drink again and poured herself another one. ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, they hurt our kind, we hurt theirs.’ She shrugged, ‘that’s all there is to it.’ She gave a soft uncharacteristic smile. ‘By the way, I may have been the one who gave the order to carry out the attack, but it was your half-child who gave me the idea.’
