That was the only year that they’d missed their battlefield trip. They were supposed to go to Manassas in two weeks when Pete was killed. With planning for the funeral and Jason about to start the 8th grade, there was no way that anyone was going to be in the mood to go chase ghosts and look at cannons. They’d taken the trip the next year, and Jason swore that he could feel his father’s hand on his shoulder when he looked at the old battle maps. That was always his favorite part.
