Synopsis: A Tear for Maria
Sonja Makhno is a high school sophmore. Against the background of a friend's suicide — about which she is unsure how to feel — Sonja has to sort out her emotions for potential romantic interest Ben, help her friend Nur navigate being muslim in a post 9-11 world, and come to terms with her mother's absence. In the end maturity remains elusive, and hopefully that's ok.

There are two kinds of people in high school: those who think they are normal and that everyone else is a freak, and those who know they are freaks and are afraid that everyone else is normal. There was no doubt to which camp Sonja belonged.
