Excerpt: Working Title 1- Mist
I have worked here at ‘The Lighthouse’ for nine years now, longer than anyone has been able to handle this craziness, except for Robert. He got me the job and asked me to cut my hair, quit smoking, join a gym and offered free therapy atop the $13 an hour. “A positive attitude and excellent hygiene is the foundation we aspire our role models to emulate”, Robert said. I’ll never forget that line. I kind of threw up a little in my mouth when he said it. This is a small town and I grew up with Robert, he was “Robby”, then and one hell of a tough kid. I watched him bully kids for their snacks in grade school and when we got bigger we grew our hair long, learned how to smoke many things together, and a positive attitude was the last thing he aspired to, it showed in his record and back then, mine too. He was the role model I “emulated”. How he became what he is with what he has is a mystery to me. But I do know the patients, I mean “residents” don’t trust him and from the way he holds his face and the look in his eyes when I meet in the hallways, I don’t think he’s happy with all that hoopla he got himself and I wouldn’t want any of it, well, his Ducati , the Ducati, sweet.
