Brief Author Bio: I am a graduate student in linguistics, and I am currently in Kenya collecting data for my Ph.D dissertation. I figured I'd join NaNoWriMo this year to keep myself from working too hard and to give myself something else to do besides read, crochet, play old Mac games, study Swahili, or work on my dissertation. |

Synopsis: ?????
I'm still trying to think about what I want to write about. I have a character forming in my head that was inspired by this girl in the restaurant here in Kenya (near the border of Kenya and Tanzania in Kuria District). She has glasses and pulls her hair back into a short ponytail/bun thing, and when she smiles, it always seems a bit awkward. I almost think that if she had been American, she would've been a total internet nerd/MMO person. So I was thinking about writing about a character like her who works in a restaurant, but then it occurred to me that I really don't know how to write about different cultures, so I'm going to write about something closer to home. I think I'll make the character a mixture of what I see in her and in myself, and instead of working in a restaurant, I'll have the character work in a tea shop. Beyond that, your guess is mine.
A couple ideas I've been throwing around for where to take the story:
(1) The character is depressed/wants to commit suicide (meh...hits too close to home and maybe it's a bit of a depressing subject when I'm already homesick)
(2) The character falls in love (gaaahh...waaay too mainstream)
(3) ?????
Maybe I should just write about a character who enjoys MMOs and reading or something...one of those books where not much happens, but it's mostly focused on developing the character's personality and whatnot. Really, I have no idea! Suggestions are welcome!
