Excerpt:
The door to outside was just far enough still that if she managed to squeak out a scream before I got to her, she would hopefully still be out of earshot of the thugs on the other side. Taking a deep breath, I slammed my hospital-slipper clad heels into the floor tiles beneath the wheelchair.
"Oh!" the nurse just managed to gasp just before I whipped around out of the chair, and drove the heel of my palm up into her nose, crushing it and sending the broken cartilage up into her brain, killing her instantly.
I felt no remorse as I tried to steady myself against the wall. That swift motion had taken more out of me than I anticipated. The months of not using them put strain on muscles I'd forgotten I even had.
I bent down and tore the elastic from the nurses hair and used it to hastily put my own into a sloppy ponytail. I instantly felt better now that my greasy uncared for hair was out of my face. What I wouldn't give for a shower right this minute. Certainly not my freedom. I stared down at the lifeless body of the red-headed nurse on the floor and came to the quick conclusion that I should take her shoes. If I was going to run, having only the flimsy hospital slippers wasn't exactly going to get me far. They certainly wouldn't cut the early morning chill of late summer.
