Synopsis: Scarlet's Wood
Scarlet has lived alone in the forest for as long as she can remember--or at least since the day she met the Wolf on the way to her grandmother's house, a strange talking beast that would soon slaughter her entire family. After the brutal attack, Scarlet spent all of her efforts in forgetting her childhood.
Except as she grows older, she comes to realize that that previous life is all she has to hang on to, and every day she dons the solemn red cloak given to her by her father and follows the forest trails in an attempt to find her former home, or her favorite grove of apple trees, or even her grandmothers house--and everyday the results are the same: nothing but grim trees and scuttling forest creatures.
Then one day, Scarlet senses something different. Something amiss. And no sooner has she begun her trek on the paths then a strange, human-like creature leads her off the path, an occurance not unlike her encounter with the Wolf all those years ago. He leads her to a beautiful hall in the heart of the forest, where more of his kind have something crucial to ask of her.
Before she knows it, Scarlet is thrown into a twisted conflict that has shaken her forest to the core--and as she'll soon discover, it's up to her to return its lost balance.
Excerpt: Scarlet's Wood
“H-hello,” she said, her steps faltering. The Wolf only watched her, if anything its head sinking down lower, hiding behind the split tree trunk.
“Who are you?” The girl took more steps, but the Wolf remained where it was.
Silence. The red eyes narrowed.
“Won’t you please come out? I swear I won’t hurt you. I swear!” the girl said, her round blue eyes pleading. “I’ve never spoken to a Wolf before.”
Slowly, stepping as if someone had scattered needles over the ground, the Wolf emerged from behind the tree and onto the path. His coat made the girl's vision dance, so dappled with earthly colors as it was. His frame was lean, as if he ate enough and that was all. In truth, he wasn’t as large as she had imagined.
“Spoken?” questioned the Wolf. Its voice was gravelly, rough.
The girl nodded. “I’m Scarlet. Who’re you?”
