Jack carefully picked up the small, rusted tin. He'd found it before Torchwood. When he still wasn't quite used to dying. When he had no idea when he would find the Doctor again. How long he might be alone. He was pretty sure he'd been drunk (he had been most of the time, then) when he'd let the little creatures nibble at his hand. He hadn't known (still didn't, to be honest) if whatever was wrong with him could be transmitted. But he'd thought that however long he had might be a little more bearable if he had someone to share it with. He just hadn't planned on that person being dead when he'd thought of it.
