Synopsis: PILIPINAS 2000
The cusp of three decades of Philippine history unfolding, in the eyes of a man who faced them rather cowardly and rather lazily.
1989 He faces a new decade and the beginning of high school.
2009 He faces fatherhood.
1999 He faces hopelessness and death, amidst the hopes for the new millenium... the claims of success made by former President Fidel V. Ramos, fulfilling the program and vision called PILIPINAS 2000.
Excerpt: PILIPINAS 2000
Dandelo smiled to himself, saw the 4th-grader Sherylin Tan look fearfully at him, then smiled at her too. Dandelo thought Fat Sheryl should have the funnest patintero game of her life. He saw Roy looking askance at him, Dandelo smiled at him too. Uh-oh, Dandelo thought. Roy's figured it out. I shouldn't be extra worried. Roy wouldn't single poor Sheryl out. Dandelo watched Roy huddle his teammates, and could still overhear him give out the defensive assingments.
"Your voice is too loud Roy, I can hear you."
"Like it would matter." Roy retorted.
Roy's team were all smiles. His defensive disposition was very straightforward. The tallest and most athletic were closer to the starting line, with a token harasser at the farthest section in case someone fatigued. A dozen sections is around 100 meters, and kids can sprint themselves out if they aren't careful.
"Game patotot?" Dandelo called.
"Game!" Roy responded.
"IN!" Rickson shouted as he stepped on the starting line of the first section. The rules stated that the attackers may not be attacked if they shout "IN" while stepping on the starting line itself. A half dozen shouts of "IN" followed. The game was on.
