Excerpt:

The fighters streaked by again, sounding either lower or closer. At least they weren’t completely alone out there. Mike came back with the spotlight.
“OK,” he said. “I don’t know how much battery time this really has. Should I turn it on?”
“Wait till the fighters are gone again,” Will said. “No sense confusing their instruments. Whatever they’re searching for, we don’t want them wasting time on us.”
“What do you mean, whatever they’re looking for?” Barb demanded. “It was a plane crash. What the hell else could it have been?”
No one answered her. The night was still again, and Mike turned the spotlight on, searing a line across the waters of the lake.
There was a flash. Mike went on past, then came back to the same point, and there was another flash of reflected light.
