Haven's Bloodhound
an excerpt
Her shoes clicked quickly against the wet concrete. The dark alley seeming endless as she raced forward, daring not to look back. They were still behind her, relentlessly following, never stopping. There was no telling what lay ahead, but the chance of survival was worth the risk. If she ran into more, it would mean the same as if she stayed still. Building after building rushed by while her breathing became rapid in the cold night air. Her lungs felt chilled, but she pressed on, she had to. The hairs on her neck raised, she could hear their moans, their cries, calls to each other, a beacon to others to come to the feast.
A woman, wearing a simple black dress that matched her hair, racing for her life. She pressed on for what seemed an eternity. The street was near, she could hopefully lose those people. No, not people, they weren't people, they were things of nightmares. Creatures animated for the sole purpose of devouring the living. These things weren't human, not anymore.
"Zombies" she hated the word, but knew it to be true. That was exactly what they were. Reanimated corpses, things from fantasy tales and hollywood movies, only real.
