"Oh, don't listen to that," said the first boy. "She doesn't want friends. She's going to drag you back to Ummie, kicking and screaming. We'll never see your face again." He held his hands up to his face, mimicking the eye slit of a burqa. The other children nodded their assent, and explained the various ends for which they believed Azarin was trying to find recruits, all of which were the product of their own fancies: that Azarin needed test subjects for a new strain of Plague which killed only Christians; that Azarin was trying to convert Christians to Islam for a future civil war; or (one girl whispered in a hushed tone) that Azarin was going to use Jane's body for her own perverted desires.
