Slaughter Incorporated
an excerpt
There was a loud sound of metal snapping. They both turned in its direction in time to see part of the fence finally give way under the mass of zombies. They began slowly pouring in, tripping over each other, pushing and shoving, until the opening was completely blocked by writhing zombies unable to get passed each other. Gregory and Sammy just watched this for a while without saying a word. Every time it looked it would clear up, something happened to block it up again. It was the most frustrating thing they had to watch.
“That’s just sad,” Gregory eventually said, sounding like there was genuine emotion in his voice. “Do we go help them?”
Sammy spoke into her walkie-talkie. “Jack, is convoy wall complete?”
“Since yesterday,” came Jackie’s reply.
This seemed to satisfy her as she continued to watch the zombies struggle.
This went on for another ten minutes. “You’d think at least a couple of runners would get through.” But no runners ever made it through. In fact, the runners were the cause of most of the problems. In their apparent rage and madness, they would pull down any zombies that happened to be too close trying to get themselves back up. This made the pile even more unwieldy as all the zombies within arm’s reach of the runners would fall back down, effectively burying each other.
“There’s a metaphor here,” Gregory eventually remarked. “Like... I don’t know. I’m not really good at that book crap.”
“Is metaphor for human selfishness,” said Sammy, her gaze unwaveringly observing the hole in the fence. “Trying to help yourself, you are pulling down others and is conclusion in collapse of everything.”
Gregory glanced at her in surprise. “I didn’t know you were into that deep philosophical stuff.”
“Is a lot you don’t know,” she replied without looking at him.
