Secret of an Empire
an excerpt
Chapter One: …wait. What?
Darkness. He had never seen, never felt, never known darkness this truly… well, dark. The desert was always bright—in the day with the scorching sun, in the night with the chilling moon. Except when his eyes were closed. Were his eyes closed now? He tried to open them and failed. He was not sure if his eyes were open, or not.
Wait. Was that light? A little inkling of light, just enough to give him hope. Like the glow of an angel. Ma said angels aren’t real a voice murmured inside his head.
WAKE UP KASEY another voice shouted. MA IS DEAD.
Kasey’s eyes shot open and he was surprised to find that there was, in fact, light. A small torch was fastened to the rock wall, slowly dying away. It mostly just cast shadows around the tiny area, but he could still make out what the room was. A dungeon. Or was it a dungeon? Kasey’s ankles were buckled into the only chains in the room, and they were in the corner farthest from the solid metal door. A chair sat a few feet away, a burlap sack next to it. Kasey had a feeling that this wasn’t just a dungeon. This was a torture chamber.
Gorram. How had he even gotten here? Where even was here? He sat up slowly and tugged on the chains, testing their strength. They were both solid, not a rusted spot or broken loop. Of course.
Kasey tried to think back. He hadn’t just been asleep. Sleep still was not as dark as that. He had to have been unconscious. And that is when his memories all came flooding back. He leaned against the cool stone wall as he tried to remember what exactly had happened. It had actually been bright then….
