Excerpt: Wishes (working title)

I wonder if I ever imagined that this was the way my life would end, sitting on a ledge far above the city, the noise a faint hum below me. My feet are dangling into the abyss and all that has stopped me from leaping has been the power of my mind - how ironic that seems to me now. I watch the ants below and wonder how many of them, given the chance, would choose to be exactly where I am right now. Would they have done the same as me, walked the same path? And would they have learned, as I have, that the most painful words in the English language are ‘I wish’?
