Chapter One
May 24th, 1923
It was raining hard outside the train station, the constant sound of drops hitting the roof demanding attention in the minds of the station's occupants. These occupants were fairly few on that day - the staff, of course, smart and bored looking in their blue uniforms; an elderly couple bickering under their breath; a middle aged businessman with a fancy suit; a fresh-faced young man, thriving and expectant, and an 18 year old girl with soft brown hair that curled under her chin, a pale and freckled complexion, and a nervous foot tapping on the tile floor.
The girl's name was Angelica Lloyd, and she was taking a train to New York City to collect some money. Typically this would be a cause for some pleasure, but Angelica did not look pleased; her eyes were red and puffy and her blank expression hid inner desolation. This was because the money came from her brother, who had moved to the big city three years previous, had done very well for himself, and was now dead.
Angelica's parents were long gone as well, her father, Mr. Lloyd, having died in a work-related accident at a lumber mill, shortly after which her mother had fallen grievously ill, of heartbreak, people said, although it couldn't be claimed that she'd died of heartbreak for she had, in fact, been run over by an automobile on the way home from buying medicine. After her mother had died, Angelica's brother, Mark, went to the city to be a journalist while Angelica had stayed behind in Woodbridge, Connecticut, living with a family friend. Mark had sent checks home, partly to appease the family friend, who had gotten less and less friendly as Angelica had gotten older, and partly out of an understandable sense of duty to protect his younger sister.
But now Mark could not protect his sister anymore, and the family friend had politely but coldly informed Angelica that she was no longer welcome. So Angelica was standing in the train station, one hand gripping a train ticket, the other holding a small suitcase, the knuckles on both white.
Angelica glanced up at the clock, softly ticking on the station wall. The train should have arrived five minutes ago, but it was not terribly reliable and so Angelica wasn't surprised that is was late. She went over her plan in her head for the fifth time in the past half hour. Her plan went as follows:
One. Arrive in New York City, find a way of getting to the address where Mark had been renting a room and talk to the landlady about renting the place herself, or at least staying for the night.
Two. Find Mark’s account number, and go to the bank to withdraw enough money.
Three. Look in the papers for a suitable job.
Four. Talk to the police.
What happened next would depend on what happened at the police, of course. And possibly how much money Mark had in the bank as well. After all, if she didn't have enough money, there was no way she could hire a private detective...
