I wasn't sure where to put this... so if it doesn't seem a good fit it's totally okay to move it. So here goes nothing...
Myself and another nanoer Novpyro we are planning each other Nano's and we thought it might be fun to share our journey. This is going to be our official nano swap thread. First a little background...
Both Novpyro and I have been doing nano for the last three years, we started together and have finished every nano together. We're best nano buddies forever. This year we have have decided to shake things up. We are going to swap nano novels.
So here's how it works. Last month we came up with two story proposal each. One at a guidance of the other (for example Novpyro asked for a proposal in the urban fairy tale genre) and one independently. Once the two proposals were finished we each had a large paragraph with a general idea of what each story would be about. Then we choose one (for example I had choose between superheroes and time travel - I chose superheroes). Novpyro is now currently working on the plot/background info/characters for the superhero story and I the urban fairy tale. On October 31st we are going to switch. So on November 1st I will end up with a story plotted by Novpyro and she by me.
Here are the rules: 1. The plot packet has to have 2 character bios, 3 must have scenes, a 1 to 3 page plot summary and any other generally necessary info.
2. We have to keep to ALL the main information given in the packet, ALL the main plot beats, and ALL the must have scenes have to be included (obviously).
3. However to not be cruel if we are TOTALLY hating our story after a week we can swap for something new and after nano we are free to edit and change anything at will.
So this thread will have updates on our project, general woes, calls for support, and ask for help with plot tangles. Also anyone is welcome to find a friend and try it too.
(Do you see why it was so hard to figure out where to put this thread?)
Good luck! I'm sure that this will turn out to be a very interesting thing, and maybe I'll try with someone else! I have someone to do it with, but I might do it on my next novel.
You gotta ignore people that and look that the sentence that they wrote and realize that they criticize people for not being able to write when they put not one, but two state of being verbs in their comment.
Not to mention that they put a comma after "but" with the intention of making a compound sentence, but as the second half was a dependent clause, there was no subject. The author of this thread didn't even use "first of all" in their post, so quoting it didn't make any sense. In any case, as they say, "Haters gonna hate!"
That is a pretty cool idea, I believe I will have to find a bud to do that with. I know lots of people that write that have an interesting sick sense of humor so I might regret it but it would be an awesome challange, and I am a sucker for a challange.. Good luck and happy writing!!!!!!
This sounds like a fantastically awesome and fun project - maybe next year (or at Camp NaNo) I'll give this a try myself, if I can find a plot-trading buddy. Who knows, you could be starting a whole new NaNo subculture here!
Best of luck with your novels - sounds like you could have something really awesome here!
This sounds super awesome!! And, if you get totally bored/frustrated, you guys could try swapping stories for a week. just to liven things up a little ;) Good luck!
Wow this is a really cool (and ambitious) idea! I don't know if I'd be able to do it. This is my first nanowrimo and I don't know how it'll go. Maybe in a few years I might give it a try? It would definitely be cool if I didn't have a story idea that totally take over my mind with planning but still seemed like a decent idea. I could swap it with someone else.
this is my first year doing this too... I'm so excited but I'm a day behind since I don't have power at home (victim of the Halloween Snow Storm in New jersey) Good luck to you!
So first update: I've sent my plot packet out to Novpyro. A little about what I came up with for her: it is a young adult fantasy about a girl named November (I didn't realize the pun until after i had chosen - i really do just like that name!) who has to stop Loki from opening the bi-frost and reawakening the Norse gods. It features norse mythology and folktales exclusively. But I'll let novpyro tell you the rest.... the packet also has seven documents full (some more then others) with research about norse mythology, including norse relics, mythological creatures, an explanation of all the worlds on the world tree. So there should be no complaining that I threw her into the deep end!
This does seem like a really cool idea, but like SarahRad this is my first NaNo and I like my story idea too much to just give it away. Maybe next year, though! And good luck!
Wow, that's so ambitious! I know if I got a package like that I would get halfway through and take the story off in a totally new and random direction. Perhaps I should try that next year to challenge myself. It's my main fault - I can't stick to plans!
Oooh, that's a good idea! But this is my first year, and I think that I'll just write my own story this time (although I will confess, I'm having some trouble with my plot). But I will totally do this sometime!
I am keeping my plot but i will put another one out there for a needy Nanoer!
Character Bio
Ammerlynn (ay-mur-Lin)-Being the main character Amy (nickname) is ambitios, determined, but only inside, on the outside, she is shy, and always sticks to the books.
Sarrahh-Shes a double taker which means she shares her body with a never borned twin. On the inside shes fickle and rude, but on the outside shes Nice and funny.
No need for must need scenes! :)
Summary
Basically, the story is about these five kids. They are TOTALLY different on the outside than on the inside! But one day, something causes them to go to the world of their INSIDE. So they act totally what they are on the inside (thats why i described their characteristics on the inside)
If you have any questions just message me!! :D =33
I won't swap my entire plot (no, no, not after all that planning), but I'll swap a scene if anyone is interested :P Like, swap scenes from other people's works? Message me if you are interested (btw, my novella is called Devil's Adherence, and is about wizardry and devilishness and the like :D) I'll write your scene (or write a few paragraphs for you) and you come up with a scene for me?
I'd be interested in swapping scenes a little further into the month... I'm still getting an feel for my novel, but I'm absolutely certain that I'm going to hit spots when I don't know how to proceed. I think if we swapped, it might give me a bit of an imagination jump start.
Next update: Hello all! I'm Novpyro and I am the other half of this crazy endeavor. I am still working on Hazel's stuff but I can tell you one challenge of all this for me has been worrying if I am including too much information or not enough. I want her to be able to have free rein once she gets this but I also want her to have enough info about the world to do so. I will update once I have finished!
Wish I'd seen this earlier. I have a plot, characters, outlines of several scenes and so on, but decided at the last minute not to use it. If you are still stumped and need an idea, I am willing to give it up for a dedication when you are published. Science fiction, time travellers, a (now extinct) California black bear and a stolen 1968 Mustang. How does that sound?
the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping

Well, that was quite rude.

Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
I hope you have power now!
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Oh man, I was hit by the same storm...thankfully my power and Internet are both finally back!
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
This is really awesome! I'd completely be up for doing this with someone sometime.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Obviously not this year, but maybe in a random month, or next NaNo!

Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Oh my gosh. Loki is so awesome!!! I even used that as the name for one of my characters... Sounds like you're going to have loads of fun.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Huh. Loki's the name of my protagonist, I aaaalways forget I poached the name from the Trickster God. But sounds intriguing... :D
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
It's funny but my brother's handle on a forum site was Loki and he still uses it every once in a while.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Haha I was already using the name Loki as a minor character in my novel
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
This does seem like a really cool idea, but like SarahRad this is my first NaNo and I like my story idea too much to just give it away. Maybe next year, though! And good luck!
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Just do it!!! Its going to be so fun, thats the point of writing

Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
That has been one of the joys of this project - seeing how the other interprets what you've written.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Awesome! Good luck guys!
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
OMG thats very similar to my story! Well, the plot goal is different, but Loki is the bad guy who's trying to wreck the world.....
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Don't worry, that's what Loki is best at. =)
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping

This sounds fun, maybe one day I'll try but right now I just want to write my own story and see how far I can go.

Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
I am quite possibly in - mine is about a typical teenage girl who gets swept away into the fey world, no title yet.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
I'd be interested in swapping scenes a little further into the month... I'm still getting an feel for my novel, but I'm absolutely certain that I'm going to hit spots when I don't know how to proceed. I think if we swapped, it might give me a bit of an imagination jump start.
Let me know if you're interested as well... :D
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
oh man i would love to do this with someone, though i could probably only do it for a week. i lose creativity with a story after that..
Though i have a plot for someone if they need it
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
As a particularly need WriMo, and as a bit of a burned-out writer, I would be up for an assigned plot!
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
That's amazing! Good luck :)

I'd definitely be up for doing this in some random month. x) Just message me if anyone's interested in doing it- like February or some time. xD
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Oh man, I could really use a plot. I am not interested in anything right now, which is a big bummer. It's like never having a food craving!
Please help me out! I have ideas I can swap, just nothing mind-blowing (imho).
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Wish I'd seen this earlier. I have a plot, characters, outlines of several scenes and so on, but decided at the last minute not to use it. If you are still stumped and need an idea, I am willing to give it up for a dedication when you are published.
Science fiction, time travellers, a (now extinct) California black bear and a stolen 1968 Mustang. How does that sound?
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
Interesting idea. I'd love to see where it goes. Just remember its how you place them that really matters.
Re: the long and potentially dangerous journey into Nano swapping
I'm up for it. I got a bunch of ideas bouncing around my head. It's kinda good but its also a curse. I can't seem to choose which one to work on!
