Hello folks!

Tina/Blenky here, the ML for Thompson area! Not too many people seem to be from the North that I've seen, and we don't seem to have our own forum up yet, so I'd just like to invite you to add your name to this topic and let me know you're around! A number for some of the nifties we could get would be real nice.

I'll be posting where we will have our kick off party soon, as well where our Northern write-ins will be held, so hang in there!

Talk to you tomorrow!

It's the infamous self-introduction questionnaire of pointless random information.

The **UNOFFICIAL** "Write-Out" and Coffee Klatsch Thread

Okay, now that the site is less broken and it doesn't take me 13+ hours to load a forum thread:
(Not kidding. Tried to load forums at 6:00 p.m. Still hadn't loaded by 8:00 a.m. next day. Yay for Russ and debugging.)

As the MLs, we hold official write-ins once a week. These are the ones where we will show up with stickers, name tags, goodie bags, thesaurii (??) and the like to provide you with all the hoo-rah and moral support we can fit into a 16 ounce coffee mug. (and yes - YES - we have **plot ninjas** this year... yippee!)

But what to do, what to do, if you can't make write-ins, but still want to write with other people. Or if, like Heather and I, you are just generally distracted by all the stuff you ...ooh, shiny... um, can do at home that ISN'T writing, so it's safer to hide out somewhere else?

In comes the concept of 'write-outs'.

If you're going to be writing somewhere public and would like other Wrimos to join you and keep you company, post a date, time and location here in this thread. No promises anyone will come, but put out the tent card in your goodie bag (no tent card? then you need to come and meet us...) or lay out your notes and your laptop and see who shows up.

Two basic rules:

1) Do NOT have a Write-Out on the same day as any officially stated event, please, unless you're Bea from Flin Flon and I know you won't be keeping anyone from attending. :) People should not be forced to choose. Write-outs are not a substitute for write ins, they are in ADDITION to them.

2) Please be mindful of your own safety. ***ABSOLUTELY NO PRIVATE RESIDENCES!!!*** Do not post phone numbers to these forums, they are viewable by the general public. Constrain write-ins to coffee shops, libraries, malls and other gathering places for the human animal. Meet a friend at your destination who can write with you if you'll be out late so you have a traveling companion - it gets dark *early* in November, and walking around with an expensive laptop bag can be an issue of concern.

You still have to come out to official write-ins to get your stars and things, since I don't lug the Tickle Trunk to write-outs when I show up at one, but it's a way to get out and meet people.

This thread is also for people who want to connect on a purely social level outside of the official dates. The same rules apply, but if someone wants to host Sunday 'brunch and babble' at Cora's in St. Boniface one morning, I'm all for that. :)

=Bets=
(Oh, one other thing - no balloons on a string / stick please. A dead Dan at a write-out would be a bad thing. Please come up with a non-latex way to indicate your table. Wearing the official 2007 Nanowrimo t-shirt works well. *heehee*)
NaNoToBa Off Season Meet & Greets (January - September)

As we've done for the past few years, Heather and I will be hosting off-season gatherings on the second Friday of every month (after December, please, as we need to sleep and get through the holiday season first). Traditionally, these have been hosted at the Fyxx on Broadway, a coffee shop that is (a) wheelchair accessible and (b) has been very accommodating to us in the past.

Off-seasons don't tend to be a whole lot of people, and they're very much a come-as-you-are kind of informal social gathering. We sit, drink coffee, try and cement names to faces and kvetch about life, the universe, work, spouses, kidlings and whatever else comes to mind. Sometimes we even end up talking about writing - but not often.

Nanowrimo is a bit like a tent city that comes into town for the faire. It sets up, there is much merriment and joy, and then it all blows out of town again, leaving good memories and a few pieces of popcorn skittering across the snow-covered parking lot. We don't try to keep up this kind of energy the rest of the year, it would kill us. So we invite people to come out and chill with us for a couple of hours once a month and actually *gasp* make friends with some of the other participants. :) Even introduce us to friends you have that might want to come out and play next fall.

Fyxx on Broadway: 360 Broadway Ave (the Canadian Diabetes building on the southwest corner)
7:30-10:30 p.m. (ish)

Dates (tentative):
January 11, 2008
February 8, 2008
March 14, 2008
April 11, 2008
May 9, 2008
June 13, 2008
July 11, 2008
August 8, 2008
September 12, 2008

Any of these dates are subject to change or disappearance due to life circumstance. :) May has been known to be cancelled due to conventions, concerts et al, but we'll see how it goes this spring.

Please note - there is NO requirement to be a Facebook member to participate, NOR is this a substitute for participating in the forums; especially since they're not only going to be UP all year, but signups will be OPEN all year as well.

However, since there seemed to be an interest, for those who are already on Facebook, it's basically decamping for the name. :) I see there's about thirty groups named Nanowrimo, so I thought I'd create the thing, even if it doesn't do much. Name control is a beautiful thing. *heh*

The Personal Contact / IM Thread

In the past, we've shared contact information via instant messenger client for those who are so inclined. Some of us are rather geekly inclined and like things like AIM, MSN, ICQ and other three letter acronyms that sit in our system tray and say "bing" when we have friends. :)

** There is NO requirement to do so. Bear in mind this is a public forum and any information you post here is accessible to anyone visiting the site. No phone numbers, home addresses et al. Only post e-mail addresses you're willing to share.

AIM: Daetyn
MSN: bpunkert@hotmail.com
ICQ: 3673956

If you IM me, please say who you are and where I should know you from so I don't erase your message by accident. ;)

For personal correspondence, if you Nanomail me, I'll give you my e-mail address. I don't check the site nearly as often after December (although I will be helping to moderate a general forum this spring, so I won't be COMPLETELY gone).

=Bets=
(PS: I am also looking for 3-5 AOPs for the channel. Minimum one completed year as a participant, must be reasonably fluent in Nickserv and Chanserv and BattleJesus. Nanomail or e-mail at the regional mail address winnipeg_mb[at]nanowrimo[dot]org to apply. Must also be willing/planning to be online semi-regularly throughout the year to provide a presence so the channel isn't deleted off the server. I figured if I put this here, the more technologically savvy would notice it. *G*)

A hearty "Thank you!" to Betty and Heather, who made this year so much easier for a lot of us (or at least for me). Through thick and through thin, they did us proud as MLs, bucked us up when the going got tough, and handed out a LOT of cool swag at the write-ins.

2007 Event Dates and Locations ~~**Winnipeg TGIO Information**~~ [Do NOT reply to this thread, please]

IMPORTANT!!

Please do NOT reply to this thread to tell us you are attending an event.

E-mail the Municipal Liasions at winnipeg_mb@nanowrimo.org co confirm your attendance.

This thread WILL eventually be locked and stickied and cleared of all replies.

Last In-Person Write In - THURSDAY November 29, 7-9 at the Millenium Library
Virtual Write-In - FRIDAY November 30th, 6-12(ish), channel #nanotoban (see thread for info)

-- Purely Social / Group Bondage Events --

TGIO (Thank God It's Over)
December 8, 2007 7:00 - 10 (ish) <<***DATE CONFIRMED***
Location: RSVP REQUIRED - TBA to respondents **ONLY**

RSVPs:

RSVPs are absolutely, completely IMPERATIVE for the TGIO. Actually having *WON*, is not. *grinning* Seriously. I don't care if you wrote 10k or 100k - come out and celebrate with us.

PLEASE read through this message very carefully. If you are attending, there are potentially FATAL allergy issues, so we need to make sure everyone is aware of them.

You MUST e-mail us at winnipeg_mb[at]nanowrimo.org if you are attending. The TGIO Is at a **private home** and will not be posted to the forums, nor will it be sent via blindmail!

We've been graciously allowed the use of this space for three years now. Regrettably, it's not wheelchair accessible (there's a few stairs on the porch, but they're navigable if you're on crutches or the like). The owners live upstairs and have two dogs who generally don't come into the downstairs space, but we may hear them.

A few particular notes about the Winnipeg Thank God It's Over party.

1) Our TGIO is a potluck affair. Because of drop dead do-not-pass-go allergies: absolutely NO Nuts, Seafood or Mushrooms. None. Vegetarian sushi is out because the seaweed is packed in fish oil. No Worcestershire sauce (contains anchovy paste). Please read labels. We cannot stress this enough. If you have ANY doubts, please ask us.

2) We are renting the space from a group where it is used for a book club, a choral group and various other functions. It is the main floor of a duplex in a residential area. Because I have to pay for the space, I do ask for a silver collection from those who attend. A couple of bucks a head usually does it.

3) We will make coffee, tea, cider or what have you, depending on who attends and what they'd like. We provide plastic plates and forks and the like; if you have your own take-out type mug, feel free to bring it.

4) It is typical to bring samples of your work. Depending how large of a crowd we have, we may encourage people to read aloud. Note that the house was built in the early 1900s, so plugs are at a premium; laptop users, charge them up before you arrive.

5) We usually have a few spare winner's certificates for those who didn't get around to printing theirs off. You can also finish up your name badge and your stars, and get your Inner Editor back if you really missed them that much.

We take suggestions for the next year if offered, and can generally be bribed with large quantities of high quality dark chocolate. No guarantee of success, but feel free to bribe away if you really want us to think it over. :)

Oh and don't worry; we can fit upwards of forty people in that space in a pinch, so we'll make room for you. *grin* Hope to see you there!

A few more things:

A) If you already know what you're bringing, include that in your reply. This way we won't end up with twenty bowls of potato salad and eight trays of cookies. (We already have three)

B) We do NOT have access to heating or cooling for food. Crock pots we can manage, but there is no stove or microwave. Please bear that in mind when preparing your meal / food. Also remember to bring your own serving ware if needed.

C) Bring enough for 3-4 people. We'll have a lot more attendees than that, but if everyone brings a small portion then we're not trying to work out what to do with the leftovers. (Just trust us in this. We've hosted or attended a LOT of potlucks, and the 3-4 people rule seems to hold true no matter how big the crowd is.)

Please don't arrive before seven p.m.; we need time to set up.

=Betty and Heather=
Your Friendly Neighborhood Cat-Herders

(Much like being a network administrator, organizing a group of writers is like cat-herding, only with many fewer cats.)

**BUMP**
Virtual Write-In << **Well? Again? Yes/No?**

Hello troops.

The idea of a chat-based / "virtual" write-in is one of those things that comes up from time to time in the feedback we get from participants, particularly because of how far away some of us are from each other.

The biggest challenge here has been the level of technical acumen and the wide spread between complete and total nerds like me, and people who can barely figure out how to turn on their computer. I don't want people to have to download anything, or use any particular instant messaging client to contact each other.

It is possible to create channels on irc.goodchatting.com (the server Nano uses) and there's a few good, web-based simple IRC clients that people could try if they don't already have mIRC or Trillian or something similar, such as IRC@Work or CGI:IRC, or any of a vast number of Java based online clients.

I'm checking to see if there would be interest in trying a virtual write-in, say, the evening of the 23rd (that'd be next Friday night, not this Friday). I don't know for sure what it would look like yet, or what might be involved - I think that it would have to be shorter blocks of time to write in, or definite word count targets, but if there's clear interest (>20 people, let's say, out of 120 active participants), I'll block a few hours that evening, add some specific instructions and links to clients to this e-mail, and we'll see what happens.

**THIS IS PURELY EXPERIMENTAL / RESEARCH!!*** There's no guarantee if we try this that it won't utterly suck *laughing*, and I can't promise it'll even happen, much less work... I'm just trying to gauge level of interest / ability. (If you're interested, it would be helpful to know what level of experience, if any, you have with IRC.)

30,000 words down, 20k to go!

Oh yes. 20k to go. For some, you may be struggling uphill, for others, snowballing your way down the hill.

I just hit 30k a few minutes ago, and I'm on my way to catching up with the rest of you. And hopefully I'll be able to add two more stars to my name-tag for the next write-in. ;D

Keep on going, guys!
AutoSummarize (aka Microsoft Mangled My Novel!)

We got into a kind of side discussion about the Microsoft Word auto-summarize feature. :)

For most versions of Word, under Tools, there's a featue called "AutoSummarize"

The summaries basically take random samples of your novel and build a precis in a new file.

Feel free to post the summaries here and we'll all have a good laugh. Keep it to the sorter ones (10-20 lines or 100 words) which tend to result in much funnier blocks of text. :)

Mmm. Breast feathers. :)

Kim's Thanksgiving Puke Rant

Hi Everybody,

We have had a bout of stomach flu go through our house this week. I have to be thankful in that, other than me (being retchedly ill), I've only had to tally up two pukes; not bad in a family of 5.

So during the wee hours of the night, while I was picking food chunks off the sheets and scrubbing the mattress, I started to mentally compose a little plea which I'm sending to you!

It takes a lot of love to clean up someone else's puke. A lot of love. Before having children, my only contact with other people's puke was to gladly sidestep around it. Now that I am a mother, it never ceases to amaze me the lengths I will go to prevent the puke from landing on any absorbing surface; I will even catch the puke if it means saving the carpet (which I have done). Maybe it's not maternal love, but material love, that is to say, I love the carpet. In any case, that's a lotta love.

I know Canada had Thanksgiving last month but tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the U.S. If you haven't already done so, please, on my behalf, go right now to your loved ones - be it your mom, dad, best friend, stranger in the alley - whoever has been your puke cleaner-upper and say THANK YOU! Believe me, there is no other love like vomit-fortified love.

Oh, and here's a thought: If you are feeling stuck with your characters, have one of them vomit. Surely it will bring the band together.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Kim

Calling all Underachievers!

This email is a cheerful high-five to all of you who are already behind on the daily word count goal. Woohoo!

I am currently standing on 4,631 words. Not even a lousy 5,000! But hey, am I giving up? Nyooooooo!

I thought about quitting, claiming that I'm really not "in the mood to make stuff up." (I bet you students have had many thoughts like this; feeling pulled between your educational responsibilities and this "fun stuff.") However, I am looking at this as a wonderful exercise in self-discipline. Today I discovered what it is that has been making this process so slow (other than going on a 4-day holiday with my family). First point: I am just starting to get to know my characters. I keep asking, "Who ARE you? What's your name?" and the second illustrious point is that I have no idea what I'm doing! Really!

Writing is much easier when you just fantasize about it!

Keep up the good work!

Kim

P.S. Remember on the Hello My Name is interview, someone asked the question Real names or Fake names (something liek that) That question is buzzing in my head each day as more and more characters pop up. I finally had to surrender and named one of my characters "Grant Hollow". Boy am I having fun with that one!
The wall....

I have hit it. My writing is sloppy, chunky, crunchy and I can't seem to get into the flow of my 16, 000 weekend. I am desparing of finishing a decent, readable novel. I feel like I'm drifting around and my characters want to take a break, they don't trust me writing them anymore. So I've hit the wall. I feel like I'm borrowing through it with a spoon. Like Andy in Shawshank Redemption.

So I know that I'm halfway there.
The Half-Way Mark -- that Magical, Wonderful 25,000

I just cracked 25k last night. My male MC and female MC are relating to each other in interesting ways, my antagonist just became a fully fleshed-out person, and I wrote a scene that broke my heart and made me a little sick. I have a plot worked out that should see me through to the finish line and I've already written the climax and most of the closing scene of the book.

Hope everyone else is doing well...
Novel excerpt updates

Hello, all:

As the month goes on, I plan to update my novel excerpt on a fairly regular basis to give glimpses into different parts of the story. I thought that if others were doing the same thing, we could use this thread to let people know that new excerpts were available to be read.

I haven't put an excerpt up yet -- I have to transfer the story file from my ancient laptop to my iMac in order to do that -- but should have one up in the next day or so.
