Hey everyone,
I'll be writing (well, half) in this genre this year, and I thought it would be awesome to hear about the novel you're writing. So if you already have some vague idea (or a definite one) about what you'll be robbing from history and hammering into 50,000 words of fiction, please post here!
My own will be about Michiel Adriaanszoon De Ruyter, a 17th century sea hero in Dutch history. What exact episode in his life I will pick, I have no idea, but it will involve a Dutch ship, an English ship and enough odd characters to give even De Ruyter a headache.

I'm half in this genre myself.
Mine is about Miranda Holmes, a young (26 years old) woman who is... not a conventional female... from England during the years between the two World Wars. As her name hints, she may or may not be the granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes. (It is only suggested because then, if it gets published, I can't be sued. Yay for loopholes.)

Hello,
I'm thinking of writing a sort of biographyish thing about a slave in Ancient Sparta who takes part in the 464 BC revolt and gets relocated. I need a bit more substance though...

Hi
You might get some useful info on the Nova Roma website.
I'm quite interested in the Roman Empire and especially in Roman Britain but I haven't decided what my novel's going to be about yet - not sure I have enough background info to make a historical novel work.
Good luck

I'm writing a sequel to my 2006 alternate history Nano-novel. This one is set a couple of years later, in 1595, and will start in England but mostly take place in Venice.
As for plot, the protagonist (Mal Catlyn) and his best friend will be following Mal's younger brother Alexander to Venice, where they discover an insidious plot by the merchants of that fair city. More than that would be telling ;-)

I've always wanted to write an alternate history 1990's Soviet Invasion of Europe. Sort of an updated Red Storm Rising set in the 90's and not 70's politics with 80's hardware.
It's not exactly the most topical work, but I've a bunch of ideas and scenarios I wanted to explore in writing and, hell, if this isn't the place for that then I don't know where is. ^_^

Although they are written out of order, I'm continuing the novel from last year.
Last year, it was Berlin, Book IV, running from 1908 to the conclusion in 2000.
This year, it will be Berlin, Book II and III, running from about 1200 through 1908.
Lots of work, but ultimately rewarding. At least, I think so.

I might write a WWII-era novel...I have an idea I've been playing around with that I'll use if I don't come up with something else. It would be set on the American homefront and be about the life of a family while the father is off at war. I don't know when during the war it would start, and how much time it would cover, or really much of anything about it yet. I just have a few general ideas. I'm trying to come up with more though, and I'd love to use this idea! My concern, however, is that I would get too bogged down with research, that I'd have a hard time getting it all written in time.

I'll be writing about an artist, his wife and his patron in 1890s London. I've already got those characters and some ideas about their relations, now I'm trying to design a decent plot during October.
I''m just finishing my Master's thesis on victorian artists, so I got lots of inspiration from that. And it's quite convenient that I've read so much on that era for university, so it saves me some research.

Holmes might be in the public realm now since it's been so long. It's worth checking into! Sounds like a cool idea. . . the non-conventional teaser is very intriguing!

Well that's what this month is for, right? In World War II you have possibly the most socially documented war in history. I'm sure you can find enough data to base your novel on if you go to town this month on getting your information together.
I suspect the trick is to spend a week or so reading accounts of the homefront and then write what you would like to happen in your novel. Then specifically research the topics/events you picked in your overview and see if they're usable. I don't have enough experience in writing to suggest how many plot events / themes you'd need for a nanowrimo novel, but if you find that out, then add 30% you'll be in good shape to drop unsuitable plot events based on that more detailed research.
Aim to have that stage done with a week before November the 1st and spend that last week updating your overview into a final plan. You'd be in great shape for the start of the writing!

Hi, all!
I'll be writing something that's kind of historical fiction, but has a lot of absurdist and magical realist conceits to it.
It takes place in 1855-56 Kansas during the events of "Bleeding Kansas" which were a precursor to the Civil War. It will feature a number of historical characters, and one of the main characters will be John Brown, who took part in those events, most notably by leading a small raid into enemy territory and slaying some men with broadswords. Talk about grist for the mill!
The other main characters are the villain of a folk legend who finds himself disappearing as the frontier begins to close and a fictional ancestor of Robert Zemeckis who possesses the 120-page shooting script of "Back to the Future". So. . . it's not entirely historical. ;P

Conan Doyle died in 1930, which puts most of his work in the public domain in the US and Europe. Besides, the name and character appear not to be trademarked or protected in any way, since dozens of authors have written stories about him:

So, you don't need to confine yourself to hints!

I'm working on a historical paranormal mystery set in 1850's England (Victorian Era) I have some my plot decided, however I'm struggling to get the rest researched and plotted before NaNo starts.
Anyway, the story primarily takes place in 19th century Manchester UK during the years 1849-1850. This might go into later years if I determine my story arc needs more time than the span of a year or so. I also could back it up to start at the middle or end of 1848. I'm unsure of that right now. Bridget, my Irish born main character is part of a lower class working family that gets by to make ends meet. That is until they feel the effects of the Great Potato Famine. She and her family lose their home and even each other. Those that do surivive wind up finding themselves in the dreaded work house. Bridget, however, emigrates to England in the hopes of finding a better life and in hopes of earning enough to send home to Ireland so that her family may join her soon. What she finds is not quite what she bargained for..

My story will be classical history, fantasy and humour.
The main character's name is Kevin aka Appius Quinctillius Ahala (which means... armpit.) He, for no reason and no explanation given, is transported from the 21rh century to about 300 BC and ends up in a small Roman village. Turns out the villagers are in the middle of a war with another small village called Nottroy. They call it the Second Trojan War, just because it makes them sound more important. Though the main, more serious focus of the story is solving the war through visiting Oracles.

Either I'll be doing a historical adventure with some fantasy elements set in various parts of Western Europe in 1921, or a planetary romance set on, uh, well...Neptune, around the same era. Even if I go for the Neptunian one, I want my transplanted Earthman to at least be relatively true to the era, though.

I'm taking a different course than last year. Instead of writing about Vampire Ninja in Feudal Japan it's Pyrates in the Caribbean baby.
1725, the height of the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean and a young man must search for his missing father and mend emotional wounds with his step mother.
Target length for this one is 125K, weigh anchor and hoist the mains'ils.

I'm somewhat in this genre... It's hard to explain. My novel centers on three women ~ all of whom have a connection to Coventry Cathedral. There's Madeline ~ 15th century as the first cathedral is being built. She starts as a child, the daughter of one of the chief stone masons. Then there's Magdalene (Maggie) who's a young adult, orphaned with her twin brothers and living with their priest uncle during WWII ~ at the time of the cathedral's destruction in the bombing of the city. And finally there's Madison (Maddie) who's modern day...an Episcopal priest who's serving there on an exchange...and trying to run from her own demons...a clue ~ her seminary training was in NYC from 2000-2003.
Should be fun!!

The story that I'll be writing features a fictional monarchy in a pseudo-European style world. So, I'll be drawing heavily from historical facts from the 16th and 17th century monarchies and peasant life. Thank goodness I'm a History major. ;)
But dude, I just learned yesterday in Early Modern World that the Chinese were extremely close to stumbling upon an industrial revolution in the 11th century. How cool would that have been? I mean, if they had, we could have had high-powered technology centuries ago... and everyone would be speaking Chinese. Uber awesome, eh?

I'm with you this year in my favorite genre and my favorite era, writing nautical fiction set during the Napoleonic Conflict.
It's an humorous attempt, though, because I am writing about an experimental Russian frigate that was lost in battle to the French and then the French lost it to the Royal Navy which has to deal with it now (one might speculate whether the French captain lost it on purpose).
I'm not yet sure what exactly is so special about the ship other than her proportions are somewhat weird... (the whole idea comes from an illustration for one of my stories that went totally awkward ;-))
But... who knows... maybe she is a secret weapon or something like that. *g*

I'm writing a sequel to my NaNo 2006 novel as well, which involves time traveling and the southern US in the early 1800s. I'm afraid that I won't have enough plot for the entire novel, but at least I know how it ends! (I find that I'm too addicted to killing off my main characters. C'est la vie!)

Hi there! This is my first year. :D I am so exited! I am still debating what I ought to do. I love Parisian history (mostly Edwardian and Victorian) and am contemplating something with that. Or a love story about a postman and a lonely woman, writing to her lover, who is actually the postman. A complicated plot that I can type out here if someone is interested in giving an opinion.
