Hello out there! I know there's a handful of us in the Valley and surrounding areas who will be typing or scribbling away in November. Let's get together this year! I'd love to have a party at Borders in Kalispell or better yet, if I can drag everyone up to Whitefish we can huddle in the couch-comfy corner of MT Coffee Traders downtown and sip dark chocolate mochas or their Unbelievable apple cider while we come to terms with our mission of insanity.
I'm also attending the Flathead River Writer's conference later this month, so you know I'll be psyched. Anyone else?

I'm halfway between Kalispell and Whitefish so I can do either. I took my laptop to Borders during nanowrimo last year one night and just typed away all by myself-- it would be more fun to have company.

Nifty. Well, once we (hopefully!) get some more replies we'll do some kind of kick-off and maybe have little sessions through the month if people want. Nothing crazy, I know I'm at my best huddled at my own desk with a full pot of coffee... ;)

me, too....... I don't poke my head up much when I'm writing. But somewhere about the third week when I thought I'd never get done it would have been nice to have some company!

I'm down in C. Falls, so really either one works for me. First year doing this, so help and prodding would probably be, well, needed and helpful.

Hi, Onean-- I've only done it once, so I don't have much expertise to share but it is definitely fun. I have only the vaguest idea of what I'm doing this year, I'm hoping more inspiration will appear as 11/1 gets closer.

This is my first year at NaNoWriMo and I'm really excited. I would love to hear about the writer's conference..This is also new to me..

I did Young Adult last year, but I think I'll do something else this year. I did it in journal format, and it was very difficult to get to 50,000 words with the kind of journal entries that a 13 yr old would write (in fact, I didn't, but I did reach my own personal goal of 30,000). Honestly, I have no idea what i"m doing this year, I'm hoping inspiration will strike soon. Last year I thought of my idea on the 29th. :-) Probably it will be something in the literary fiction vein but with fantastic elements (I'm a fantasy fan, too).

Hello merry band!
According to the website we should be having a kick-off party this week. Eee! I'm still all for a pow wow at a coffee shop. Next weekend I'm leaving for a few days, so I wanted to see if anyone was interested in trying to get together before the 1st, or if we just want to meet up mid-Nano and cheer each other on now and then. I've never been to a write-in or party or anything, so I think it would be fun to get together at least once.
What are people's schedules like? I'm generally free, but if evenings or afternoons or whatever are better, let me know. Since it's such a small group of us I would just as soon schedule knowing that people could come if they wanted to, not just slap down a time and place and say, 'be there or be square'...
Skye, the conference was awesome! I got to have ten pages of my current 'serious' project evaluated by an agent. She had some really insightful and helpful things to say...then the next day was all workshops and so, I got to see where I needed to go, and then..how to get there! I'm a dork and I'm actually typing up my notes for the conference and I'd be happy to share.

P.S.
I also noticed that someone put up a Nano flyer in Borders in Kalispell. The word is spreading! Was it one of you?

ARG! This site is sooooow! I hope they will be able to fix that. It seems like every time I click on something it takes 30 seconds or so to respond.
Anyway, back to the thread (just had to vent there)-- we're leaving this afternoon (10/25) and will be gone until next Wednesday (10/31) so I'm not available until November. Since I don't even have an idea yet (which is starting to worry me a BIT!), I'd be happy to wait until that next week-- but I'll try to make whatever people decide. In november my schedule is pretty flexible, so I can do afternoons or evenings. Wednesday and Thursday evenings would be difficult but not impossible, but other than that I'm pretty flexible.
I'd also love to see the notes from the writers conference. I thought about going but I didn't have anything ready that I'd be willing to share.
hope that sig is working soon-

Woo! Time Flies!
Happy Almost Halloween everyone! Hope your novel ideas are percolating.
I was thinking, because my weekend is now..gone! that we might get together next week if people are interested.
What would people say to Borders, 6ish, Wednesday?
Let me know! I'll probably head down there one way or another.

Only a few more hours...then the fingers fly...
get those creative juices flowing (or at least pretend like you do)
We shall embrace our imperfections and release our literary giant (or mouse)

Well, since all are up in the air about meeting places, and we seem to be at the crossroad of this adventure, how about this:
Tuesday nights in November, 6:30 to 8:30ish
1st and 3rd weeks - (the 6th and 20th) - Colter Coffee, downtown Kalispell
2nd and 4th weeks - (13th and 27th) - Coffee Traders, downtown Whitefish
with perhaps more frequent in-between write-ins with folks from your own town.
And, of course, a celebratory event around the 30th. Location TBA.
At least this would give out-lying people (and procrastinators) a concrete time/place if they want to show up for group frenzy and gnashing of teeth...
Personally, I would prefer to support smaller local businesses versus a giant chain like Borders, but tis up to the small merry band.
Just a thought.
Look forward to meeting yall!

I'm all for supporting the local businesses, I just didn't know if Borders would be easier for folks. Those dates sound fine to me! I'll probably only come to the Whitefish nights because... well, because I'm lazy. BAhaha..
Happy Halloween!

Hi, all-- and nice to meet you, Shelleyjo-- we are back from our trip. My idea finally started to take a somewhat cohesive shape about two days ago (nothing like waiting till the last second) so I'm interested to see how this will go. It will be very different than what I did last year.
I'm all for supporting local businesses but I make an exception for Borders-- I LOVE that place. It is book lover heaven-- balm for my geeky soul when living among hunters and hikers starts feeling stale. But Colter's is great, too, and city Brew. I'll go wherever everybody else wants to go. Next Tuesday (the 6th) works for me in the evening but I've got a conflict in the afternoon.

Howdy again all!
So, on the way home from the office tonight, I hatched a "Rodrigo" for my book, and boy, is he a bastard.
This novel thing could all get preeety interesting...
but, what the heck. "Embracing imperfections", right?
Tuesday or Thurs. evening meetings are about the only option for me.
Two jobs, two young kids, artwork, and dirty dishes...yes, it's a glamourous life...
The place is no matter, I'll even carpool to WF with Kalispell folks if necessary. I believe the need for writing comraderie will override my desire to only pay the little guy.
But, that said, I would like to work out meeting dates, times, and places for the month early on so I don't have to keep thinking about and checking on it when I will need to be writing, working, wiping butts, or doing dishes. ;)
Only a few more hours, darlinks. Is anyone starting at midnight?

Hi! This is going to be my first try at nanowrimo. It's exciting to see how many people in this area are doing this! I thought I'd be the only one in the state. I'm down in Bigfork. I think getting together a time or two throughout the month is a great idea!

I started a new topic in hopes it would show up here, but it didn't --
Hello! ShellyJo convinced me to join in and write the November Novel I've thought of doing for the last few years.
I sometimes work in the evenings, but I intend to visit one of the Coffee Klatches.
See you all, and best of luck in keeping those fingers lubricated for writing!

Hi! I found out about NaNoWriMo fortuitously on 10/31 and joined on impulse, so I'm still learning how to get around in this site. I had an idea for a novel, my second set in the early history of Montana. I'm looking to complete a sort of first draft that I'll work on later. It'll be fun, at the very least! And the challenge is sort of like swimming across Flathead Lake.
I'm in Kalispell, so Colter's or Borders works for me, but my husband had surgery on his right foot yesterday, so my first priority has to be helping him. I'm his designated chauffeur, etc., until he can a) put weight on the foot and b) drive.
I'm in Authors of the Flathead, which meets every Thursday at FVCC (except of course Thanksgiving), and organizes the Flathead River Writers Conference. Thank you all for the positive comments, by the way. AOF is a good bunch of people, kind and honest about their criticisms -- both good and unfavorable comments. I've learned a lot from them and from attending Dennis Foley's lectures the first Thursday of the month. All writers are welcome. Check out the Web site at http://www.authorsoftheflathead.org.
My Web site is http://www.swanrange.com
Good luck on your personal Lake swims!

Hi, Carol and all--
wow, Shelleyjo, you go girl! Over 5,000 words already. When my kids were in diapers I couldn't even type an e-mail. I'm jealous.
I had a complete panic yesterday when the idea that I'd been thinking about for 3 weeks or so just shriveled up and died. But this morning I sat down and got started anyway. When I started to type, the previously female main character suddenly had become a male-- which was a shock to me, I've never tried to write from a man's point of view before. But at least it's started and God only knows where it will end up (or at least I hope God knows because I sure don't). But at least I have 500 words done and the panic is receding.
Found out yesterday that my daughter's orchestra concert is next Tuesday night, so at best I will only be able to drop by.
I loved the quote from Tom Robbins in yesterday's e-mail: ...you simply pack your imagination, your sense of humor, a character or two, and your personal world view into a little canoe, push it out onto the vast dark river, and see where the currents take you.
paddling away--

Hi all! This is my first try at Nano this year. I'm in Kalispell. Any good advice for a first timer?
