have a look and see what you think of this as an idea;
It’s the hottest new computer game. All you have to do it buy a headset, connect to the dream server and you can step into a 3D world as real as reality. Interact with people and the environment. Fantastic. Except that it’s dangerous to be online so long, that’s why the helmet has an inbuilt timer. Four hours, that’s your maximum.
For an underground group of hardcore players, four hours is not enough, it’s never going to be enough. They’ve managed to hack the helmets, to disable the timer. It’s so dangerous that they have taken precautions. They’ve set up a game lab, where you can go game for hours on end. They’ll hook you up to an IV for fluids, and a catheter. They even have a medic in the room, watching over you. It’s illegal, but it works, and it’s as safe as they can make it.
For his birthday Ethan wants to celebrate by having a marathon session with his best friends. They’ve booked the underground suite for 12 hours. He and a few friends settle down for one helluva party, they hook up and dive in. But in reality, something goes wrong. The medic, having lunch, chokes to death.
Now the players are stuck inside the dreamworld. In a few hours their fluids will run out. Then it’s a race against time to find a way back to reality before their bodies die.

I don't know, but it sounds cool! Sounded slightly dark comedy to me, but that's me.

There would probably be humour in it, but I wouldn't write it as a comedy. It's just the concept that I wanted opinions on. It's in the non-genre genre because it's fits a lot of the categories (horror, sci-fi /fantasy, possibly suspense) Being non-genre isn't an issue. Finding out that there is already a program / book with the same idea might be.

If you're wondering about a story that is similar, think of the matrix with the whole real as reality computer program, and with the illegal part, and with the race against time part. Suspense, modern sci-fi, whichever. Very few stories have only one genre. ( Mine is suspense/horror/fantasy/adventure, for instance. )
I couldn't help but notice a hole in the plot though. No one would find them within the seven days or so they'd have before dying of lack of water? No one would know/wonder where they'd gone/what they went to do? Unless you'd planned something in your plot ( like it's a hidden location underground beneath an amusement park, a location known only to the medic, and is entered by completing some incredibly hard underground labyrinth or something. Lol. If you need to, feel free to take that idea. XD ) the thought is a bit hard to believe, and readers that can't believe the story would have a hard time getting into it.
