Friday Night Write-in at Denny's

When: Friday Night Write-ins (Nov 6-13-20-27)
Time: 8pm until midnight (or later, if wanted)
Where: Denny's in South Keys @2208 Bank St.
Who: Anyone who wants to write, eat good food, and have fun.

This is my first NaNo, and so new to write-ins. I am asking the help of previous participants for ideas to make night interesting (ie Word Wars...)

I'd like if people respond to show interest here, so I can have an approx number of poeple coming.

Hey!

I saw a bunch of us in the "New Year, New Nano" thread so I figured we could centralize ourselves here. It appears that there's a fairly large showing of students which is great to see.

So come on, introduce yourselves... what school are you at, what are you writing, how are you planning to manage school, nano and work (if you work)? I figure maybe veterans can share with the new about writing as a student and maintaining vestiges of sanity at the same time haha.

My piece... I'm a second year communications student at uottawa. This is either my fourth or fifth year doing Nano... I can't remember lol. So I'd say I'm fairly experienced at the whole writing-as-a-student thing. I'd love to get a group of fellow uottawa-ites together for some writing parties this year, meet new people and writers... win! lol. Other students also welcome of course, if you're in the area. :)

I'm actually a Nano rebel this year... I'm continuing on last year's Nano. I am planning on writing 50K new words, but technically since it's a continuation it's not nano-kosher. lol. But that doesn't bother me and I'm still excited. The novel's a YA fantasy fiction.

What is everybody else up to?

(I think I just sent a blank message, I wrote the title and hit enter automatically, and it submitted all by itself! D'oh!)

Here's my crazy idea for the day. Has anyone ever tried a write-crawl, or a mobile write-in? Go to one location, write for 30-60 minutes, move down the street to the next place? I could try to set one up if anyone would be up for it...

I'm feeling a bit restless today, so I'm off to do a trial-run solo write-crawl. I live near Merivale Mall, and I'm planning to walk to either Denny's or Cora's on Merivale, then bus to Billings Bridge and either settle in at a coffee shop there or somewhere on Bank (heading Glebeward). After that, I'll either get a ride home (if I'm fed up) or bus out to Gloucester to join that write-in. The idea is to be a bit random.

Anyway, in the off chance that anyone is a) checking the board now b) not doing anything and c) wants to join me, I'll go (temporarily) post my cell number in my bio (non-noveling interests) and you can give me a shout. I'm not sure how much internet I'll have on the way, so that's the best way to reach me...

I am totally not writing this message just so I get another sticker on my bingo sheet. Absolutely totally not.

And does it count as killing a character if my MC discovers his great aunt (not surprisingly) died while he was accidentally locked in a hibernation chamber for 482 years? Or do I actually have to stab her with something?

I was explaining to my b/f about the historically inaccurate amusement park in the future (where they're confused about whether the dinosaur pharoahs come back as mummys or zombies*) and he started singing "We're whalers on the moon!" So I can just mention that in passing and I've got my homage.

And finally, just how many Siobhans do we have here anyway?

Marathon Write-In of Dooooooooom, who's in?

So this weekend marks the halfway point of our month of noveling adventure.
Saturday our ML's have planned the Marathon Write-In of Dooooooooom at the Fishbowl at Ottawa U from 9am till 11pm
It's right on the Transitway (Laurier station). There's a Subway across the street and minutes walk brings you to the Rideau Centre.

So who's in?

I'm planning to come but probably not until 11:30 is cause my son plays hockey in the morning.

Carleton University write-ins

Since I'm on campus on Thursday with a break from 2:30pm to around 5:30pm, anyone want to join up and write?

We could do a regular weekly thing or something since I'll probably be writing during that time (and ignore my 50 million projects hehe).

However, I have no idea where though. The library sounds good but I don't know about the logistics.

Still not a 100% sure if I am going to make it as I may have a cold in which case I don't want to spread my germs, but I was wondering if there were plug ins for laptops or if I would need to rely on my battery. I've been there lots of times but never with a laptop so I've never noticed.

I was reading through the write-in schedule and I noticed there was no time set for the write-in tomorrow at the OPL downtown. When is everyone intending to show up? I'll probably be there sometime in the morning (fueled by coffee and a raging desire to get my story back on some sort of plot-related track rather than having it serve as a compendium of the most brutal death scenes my twisted little mind can imagine)...

Who's on board with the latest wacky social-media fad? I've been 'tweeting' as the kids say for the better part of the year, ostensibly to take advantage of linking people to new blog posts and such, but mostly because it's nice to have a readily accessible spot to toss out brief observations. The 140-character limit is ideal for efficiency: no need to get wrapped up in a big ol' LJ entry that sucks away my time when I should be writing books.

Some accounts I think are useful to follow:

NaNoWriMo (this crazy thing where you try to write a novel in a month... oh, wait.)
Dr. Wicked (maker of Write Or Die, which incidentally has a new desktop version available)

Hi everyone,

The idea of a chat write in was good, but I also fear that I will be too distracted because of the chat. I have found a wonderful location to have a Midnight Write-in

Location: Denny's at South Keys (2208 Bank St)
Time: 11pm to 2am (which equals 4 hours because of time change)

Advantages:

Free Parking and lots of it
Free WiFi
Power Outlets (I'll bring extensions)
Large restaurant and not busy (Open 24 hrs)
Coffee, food... and company.

Please let me know by responding here, so I can have an idea of how many will come.

A New Year, A New NaNo!

Greetz Ottawa NaNo'ers!

I hope you've all had a great 2009 so far! 8D As the year approaches its end we've come yet again to another NaNoWriMo season with with pen scratching, keystrokes, spilled ink, and forgotten meals. But we all know that that's not just what NaNoWriMo is about; there's write-ins, plotting, word wars, and general excitement.

Fristly, I'd like to welcome you all back for another year of writing, both to the regulars and newbies, and to our two MLs, diurnal_lee and joining her this year seems to be Dustinus. Welcome, welcome~!

With the basics aside, lets hear about your year break from writing. Did you take any breaks, or were you like me, writing draft after draft in hopes of one day publishing? Are you new to Ottawa/NaNoWriMo? Have you plotted out this year's novel, or are you still scratching your head?

Did you fail last year? If so, is there something different you want to try to keep you motivated or on track? Any suggestions for the newbies about what not to do?
