Introductions

Hi I'm new to nano and I just wanted to say hi. I have tried hard to write a book for several years. I seem to be good at starting but when I get to the middle I have a problem. I'm hoping that this goal setting thing will help me. I have followed some of the advice given in the FAQ I told friends that I was doing it. I think the story is coming along well but I didn't start my book till the 8th. The 2300 word daily goal is hard. I have to force my self to sit down and write something each day. My name is Haney and I live in the Sand Springs area. I was hopping that announcing my self here would give me another group I would feel responsible to. Help remind me to keep going. How is everyone else dealing with the 50,000 word goal.

Write Ins at TU

My husband has arranged to let us use his department on Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm for evening write-ins on November 6th, 13th, and 20th.

The location is the Special Collections Department of McFarlin Library. This is the castle-like building located in the center of the TU campus. I used to work there, and can promise you it's a fantastic place for putting you in a writing frame of mind. We'll be meeting in the Satin Rare Book Room, which is equipped with study tables, reading lights, and many electrical sockets. Food and drink will be welcome, as long as everyone is careful.

The library entrance is on the south side of the building, at the southwest corner - the underground entrance. We'll try to have signs up to direct you to the elevator at the east end of the building. The department is on the 5th floor.

After 5:00pm you can park anywhere on campus. We'll open the department a few minutes before 6:00pm.

It would help to have an idea of how many would be attending. I have the names and email addresses of those whom I met last night.

8 hours, 15 minutes to go!

Jennifer
and the road rolls on and on..

Hey out there! I haven't made it to any of the meetings, and I lost my badge with the "MY name is Chester" on it, but I just wanted to stop and see how everyone else is doing.

No, I'm not talking to the guy that has 20, 000 words already with 4 days gone, although I can tell you from experience, you're gonna pay for it, buddy. Take good care of that "E" finger, cuz you're gonna miss it when it's gone. I did 5,000 words a day for 30 days, taking only a few days off for things like sleep and shower. Trust me in this. It doesn't make you a better writer. It just makes you a writer.

This is for those folks who are struggling to make that goal, to make that word count. The ones who are squinching their eyes up and saying "Ohhhh maaaan! I am so far behind!"

There ain't no behind in this thing. It's a challenge and just like any sort of challenge, be it the Boston Marathon or simply getting out of bed in the morning (yep, it's a challenge), it is NOT about winning. It's about the participation, the doing, the journey.

Yep, it's great if you can say "Hey man. I wrote 50 thousand words." And they'll all go Ooooh Ahhhhh and shower you with roses and the key to the city. Yeah. Like that'll ever happen.

The truth is, you are doing this for YOU. Nobody else. It will stick with you for as long as you can remember. For anyone else, it's like a "That's nice, honey" moment, followed by "Oh. Did you take out the trash?"

So write like you mean it, write because you mean it, write because it means something to YOU. It's not about the winning, because you aren't. It's not about the 50,000 words, because it's not. It's about standing proud and saying to yourself, "Hey. I was in Nanowrimo and I wrote, man. I wrote." That's what real heroism is all about.
This week's write-in at TU

I've checked the university's schedule for this week and, unless they're lying, there is no basketball game scheduled for Thursday, so you should be able to park in the lot beside the library. If not, then park in the lot immediately west of the Methodist church just north of the library.

Again, we'll have the Special Collections Department open from 6pm to 9pm.

Email me at talana1@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

Hi there! I'm a TU student and I was just wondering if there were other TU students who are participating in nano this year who would be interested in group noveling sessions on campus... I think it would be fun to get together! Just checking.
Tulsa ML

Hey everyone, my name is Maurie and this is my 2nd year in Nanowrimo and my first year as ML. I won Nanowrimo in 2007.
This is a new role for me so I'm open to ideas and suggestions. I do have a facility that we can use in Broken Arrow with inernet access. I've cleared out 3 rooms upstairs in my office/studio for use.

I'll also be exploring how to publicize Nanowrimo in Tulsa and have already taken some steps towards that.

My next step is to schedule the first of our write ins and I'd like to see how many would be available on November 1, which I believe is a Saturday. You can post to this forum or you can email me directly at maurietraylor@yahoo.com. Feel free to email me suggestions on what you'd like to see to support your goal of winning Nanwrimo this year. Food? Hours to write?

Looking forward to a great Nanowrimo year!
Write-in Schedule

Hey everyone! I am in the process of adding each of you to my "buddy" list. If you want to be on my buddy list, let me know. Also, I have been chatting with other ML's and they suggest at least two write-in's per month, however, I am open to more.
Please schedule Nov 15 for one of the events and I'll be posting the "official Tulsa write-in schedule" by the end of this week.

The options are:

Tuesday evenings 5 til?
Thursday evening 5 til?

Daytime hours (I can make this available if there are those who want it...please advise!)

I suggest that we plan 2 write in's for the month of November at least.

I've also selected Oct 30 as the Pre-Nanowrimo writing date for all those who want to visit the site and mark your spot and just meet and visit. This way, we can get some of the admin tasks out of the way so that Nov 1, we're all off to serious writing.

Here are some things that I'd like to encourage you to be considering:

1 - What is your word count goal for Nanowrimo?

2 - What times will you set aside for writing (daily). What is your daily word count? Weekly?

3 - What provisions will you make so that you can keep your schedule? Meals for family? Work time vs write time?

4 - What rewards/fun time are you building into your schedule to celebrate your progress each day, week?

I'll want some assistance for the write in's and we can discuss more of that on Oct 30 for those that wish to participate. For many of you, you may work better on your own without any crowd, that's OK, too!

Looking forward to seeing your cross the Nanowrimo finish line!

----------

United States :: Oklahoma :: Tulsa

Countdown to write-in

Thanks to all who are posting and emailing me! I appreciate your feedback and ideas. With such a large membership (over 125!!!) it will be impossible to accomodate everyone's schedule. However, you can plan on Oct 30 as our preliminary meeting to work out the kinks, figure out what we want and need and basically get ready to start writing. The other write in is currently schedule for Nov 15 7 - ??? At our Oct 30 meeting, we will vote to determine what remaining dates we can do. I am open to other write ins for other days of the week--including weekends -- all to be determined next week!

I've had several questions as to "what is a write in?" Good question! It can be what we want or need it to be. Primarily, it is a way to encourage the writing fever and finishing mentality it takes to complete whatever work you may choose to be doing. There will be writing prompts and exercises for those that may want those and for those that don't...well, there are corners and quiet rooms you can go and write, write, write on your own. You may bring whatever you may want to use (laptop, notecards, notebooks, papyrus) and I'm sure everyone will have their process.

I look forward to meeting you at the write and online. Keep up the enthusiasm for your work!
