I'm about to post a challenge to Adelaide, so I thought I should start a thread here where all and sundry can begin cheering/taunting one another. (Should you wish to taunt them, the challenge to Adelaide can be found here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1015268 )

Of course, we're going to be kicking butt...

Oh, and for those who might be new to this, here are the awards we're competing for:

- The "We Are The Champions" Award goes to the region with the most winners.

- The "We Are Also The Champions" Award goes to the region with the highest percentage of winners (take the number of winners and divide by the number of people who signed up).

- The Carpal Tunnel Award goes to the region that writes the most words in total.

- The Loquacious Grandeur Award goes to the region with the highest average number of words written (take the total words written and divide by the number of people who signed up). This is calculated twice: once including people who did not post a word count and once excluding them.

- The "Everybody Gets An Award" Award goes to any region who has not already won an award. In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, every region who participates will be a winner!

"Sir, I say, sir, I accept your challenge, and we shall do pistols at dawn!" - Simpsons.

Consider your challenge accepted.
The only thing we ask is that all heckling and challenge related stuff is kept to the challenge thread. Just to keep our boards tidy. I'll be letting the Adelaide Wrimos know this too.

We look forward to kicking your butts!

Oh look, they have a graphic artist on the crew. Guess we know who will be spending all their time making pretty pictures instead of writing... heh heh heh

Maybe I'm getting it out of my system in time for November. :-)

Here's a thought. Adelaide is 15.5 hours ahead of Saskatchewan. There were 153 people registered to Adelaide last count. So before you can even start writing, we'll already have a combined total of 2371.5 hours of writing in. That's over three months worth. But don't feel bad, I'm sure you'll make it up at the end while we're partying. The important thing is not to feel discouraged, right? Even if you're doing badly, try not to dwell on those 2371.5 hours.

Here, I made you this to cheer you up:

What we can do in 2371.5 hours while those poor Adelaidians (or should I say
Ad-afraid-ians) are writing...

  • 250 hours - watch the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons on DVD
  • 2 hours - eat Halloween candy
  • 15 minutes - brush teeth
  • 10 minutes - learn the definitions of bonzer, fair dinkum, woop woop, rockmelon, root, drongo, galah, and wowser
  • 10 hours - snicker with glee about our impending victory over those drongos from Adelaide
  • 1 hour - eat an entire jar of Vegemite without using utensils
  • 5 minutes - scrub hands
  • 15 minutes - brush teeth again
  • 71 hours - learn how to play the didgeridoo
  • 50 hours - read the collected works of Banjo Paterson
  • 8.7 hours - listen to all my old Midnight Oil CDs
  • 1 hour - eat a scrumptious plate of witchetty grubs
  • 15 minutes - brush teeth again
  • 8 hours - have a good night's sleep
  • 3 hours - swim with sharks
  • 50 hours - drink 50 pints of Foster's Lager
  • 8 hours - have a good night's sleep
  • 100 hours - repeat the word "Crikey" 18,000 times as a mantra while meditating
  • 5 hours - sharpen all our pencils
  • 5 hours - wear a toque (look it up, Australians)
  • 300 hours - remember fondly Canada's 2-1 victory over Australia on July
31, 1993 in a World Cup qualifying match
  • 6 minutes - guzzle a bottle of Wolf Blass Platinum Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 15 minutes - brush teeth again
  • 1497 hours - after wasting more than 874 hours on the above activities, prepare for Nanowrimo by working on outlines, preparing character sheets, thinking of witty dialogue and captivating plot twists, and naming all our characters
  • 27 seconds - stretch and prepare to begin typing

What the Ad-afraid-ians will do in the 2371.5 hours after November ends but while Saskatchewan is still writing...

  • 2350 hours - cry, tremble with fear, regret their foolishness at taking on this challenge with Saskatchewan, and dread their inevitable defeat
  • 21.5 hours - apologize to the citizens of Adelaide for being defeated by the handsome, charming Saskatchewanians

Take that!!! :-)

I'm sorry, daylight saving kicked in this morning. We'll now have 2524.5 hours head start. I look forward to your amended timetable.

Right on! 153 more hours to spend...
20 hours - play darts using a map of Australia instead of a dartboard
8 hours - a refreshing night's sleep
1 hour - make prank phone calls to John Howard asking him if his refrigerator is running ("It is? Then you better hurry and catch it.")
1 hour - write a letter to Governor-General Michael Jeffery daring him to pinch the Queen's derriere
122 hours - watch TV news in hopes of seeing Governor-General Michael Jeffery pinch the Queen's derriere
1 hour - write another letter to Governor-General Michael Jeffery criticizing him for not pinching the Queen's derriere

You've put in a lot of effort so it's only fair I address some of these points. I must say, your personal hygeine is second to none. Unless you're dividing it by all the people from Saskatchewan.

Quote:
10 minutes - learn the definitions of bonzer, fair dinkum, woop woop, rockmelon, root, drongo, galah, and wowser

You can cut this down to 2 minutes. Rockmelon is a type of melon, and a root is the part of a plant that is underground. You can learn the other words if you want to be an inbred redneck who lives in a high-crime suburb, or make a living exporting stereotypes to the USA for fun and profit. (Mostly fun.)

Quote:
10 hours - snicker with glee about our impending victory over those drongos from Adelaide

I like this one. Ten hours of snickering.

Quote:
1 hour - eat an entire jar of Vegemite without using utensils

Good luck with that. You'll spend 59 minutes and 55 seconds longer than I ever have trying to eat that revolting brewery sludge.

Quote:
71 hours - learn how to play the didgeridoo

Standard PVC drainpipe comes highly recommended.

Quote:
50 hours - read the collected works of Banjo Paterson

That's hardcore. I'm impressed.

Quote:
1 hour - eat a scrumptious plate of witchetty grubs
3 hours - swim with sharks
50 hours - drink 50 pints of Foster's Lager

These are all things we save for the tourists. You know, I've never seen Foster's for sale in Australia. We drink Coopers, or Victoria Bitter, or Boags, or a variety of other beers that actually taste nice. I'm told Foster's doesn't taste very good, so we send it overseas to people who don't know any better.

Quote:
100 hours - repeat the word "Crikey" 18,000 times as a mantra while meditating

Ah, good old Steve Irwin. Making up for the 20,000,000 Australians who don't talk like that.

Quote:
5 hours - wear a toque (look it up, Australians)

I looked it up. I can't say I entirely understand, but I support your right to pursue any fetish of your choosing.

Quote:
300 hours - remember fondly Canada's 2-1 victory over Australia on July 31, 1993 in a World Cup qualifying match

I'm guessing that's soccer. No one here follows it much, except once every four years when we need reminding of how bad the refereeing is. Speaking of sporting victories, I still have some fond remembrance catching up to do on every Commonwealth Games for the past 20 years.

Quote:
6 minutes - guzzle a bottle of Wolf Blass Platinum Cabernet Sauvignon

If you're guzzling, and it takes you 6 minutes, my advice: don't get in a drinking contest with an Australian.

Quote:
1497 hours - after wasting more than 874 hours on the above activities, prepare for Nanowrimo by working on outlines, preparing character sheets, thinking of witty dialogue and captivating plot twists, and naming all our characters

I reckon you could get this up to an even 1500 hours. Perhaps by starting earlier?

Quote:

We're not afraid of the Sas-can't-you-wins. :-P

Quote:
1 hour - make prank phone calls to John Howard asking him if his refrigerator is running ("It is? Then you better hurry and catch it.")

You have my full support. I also recommend asking if Mr Wall is there, if Mrs Wall is there, if any of the Walls are there, then what's holding up the roof.

Quote:
1 hour - write a letter to Governor-General Michael Jeffery daring him to pinch the Queen's derriere
122 hours - watch TV news in hopes of seeing Governor-General Michael Jeffery pinch the Queen's derriere
1 hour - write another letter to Governor-General Michael Jeffery criticizing him for not pinching the Queen's derriere

Who? Ah well, I'm sure it'll be amusing. You have my support there too.

Soooooooo yeeeeeeah. About those 2524.5 hours. You've done a great job with the timetable, I don't want you to feel like you've failed already. But the 2524.5 hours of Adelaide head start doesn't mean Saskatchewanians will have that much combined advantage at the end of November, since there are less than 153 people registered to your region. IIRC there were about 64 people registered to Saskatchewan last time I looked, giving you closer to 1000 hours at the end of the month. But don't feel bad, okay? You tried and that's what's important. Or at least a good frame of mind to get in to. And you'll have very clean hands and teeth.

At last the Saskwatch rears its ugly head. I hope it's not too difficult to type quickly when half your attention is on the hockey match and the other half on keeping warm in those frigid Canadian winds.

I only waste precious typing time to say this: I'm proud to type from Montana and contribute my efforts and word count to the lofty goal of squishing you back into the tundra from whence you came.

So how is it all going? I'm up to 2933 words. I see you're all on ... zero. What's that? You're not starting for another 14 hours? *snicker*

(You knew this post was gonna happen ;-p Good luck for midnight!)

I have my eye on the clock and as the sounds of the Daily Show start in the background I will be starting my novel. With Glee and Abandon.

Then tomorrow I get to be a part of our democratic processes. I am hoping for story material ,as well a few minutes here and there to write.

I was told to bring a book. So if there is time to read there is time to write.

There's less than 45 minutes until NaNoWriMo starts, and here's what I've done in the last few hours:

- watched and recorded videos onto DVD
- read the week 1 chapter of No Plot? No Problem!
- brushed my teeth
- discussed how my boyfriend should organize his garage
- cleaned up the kitchen
- worried about whether or not I'll get the job
- ate a lazy person's supper
- put away the laundry
- gave out handfuls of Rockets to trick-or-treaters
- assembled all my paper novelling resources in the computer room
- pondered how to begin my novel
- drank some water
- gave my godson a big hug and kiss when he came to visit in his puppy-dog costume
- gave my boyfriend numerous hugs and kisses (he deserves it)
- shut off the lights to conserve energy
- went to the bathroom (twice) and washed hands (twice)
- smiled at knowing we will soon begin our slaughter of the novelists of Adelaide!

Dare we take on a third region?

I've been reading through here and while your posts seem to be adquately taunting, I've got to admire the neglect you gave your planning to be bothered writing up some intricate posts.

The most adequate form of taunting is this:

"Ner Ner! Adelaide is better! Look at our growing word counts!"

I think we have a federal election in three weeks. I'm all set to postal vote so I don't have to leave the keyboard. :-)

Here's some interesting trivia for you. In NaNoWriMo 2003, every single participant from Adelaide reached 50,000 words.
