what now?

So you've written a 50,000 word novel. What now?

The Nanowrimo site and all the forums remain up throughout the year. Discussion can continue here and on our Facebook group (the link is on the Syracuse forum page). There's also a whole section of the Nanowrimo forums on "December and Beyond."

Some regional groups continue to meet throughout the year to write, critique, or just socialize. If there's interest, I'm sure Freedom of Espresso would be happy to see us continue to show maybe once a month or so.

And of course there are lots of other writing websites out there. Maybe some of you can share your favorites.

Finally, if you enjoyed Nanowrimo, please consider donating. Just ten bucks will get you a nifty golden halo.

It's so nice to go back through some of the posts and see so many of us showing our purple bannered selves!
Congratulations to everyone who made it to the 50,000 word mark - and a pat on the back for everyone who gave it a try.
I can't wait until next November!
Game Day Drama: Hoop Dreams and Underdogs

OK, definitely been in writing mode too long.

Study break tonight! Sarah's Gators and the local favorite Orange battle to remain undefeated.

Come join us at Tully's on Seventh North Street in Liverpool.

The Gators are the favorite in the game, ranked #18 in the country, but Sarah will be the underdog at the bar.

Heck, you might even pick up some dramatic plot twists or meet some good supporting characters.
Write-in for Sunday, Nov. 23

All,

I know neither our fearless leader nor our peerless feeder can make it on Sunday (I don't think I've ever had one of each at the same time), but I'd like to keep the momentum going. If you'd like to come out for the usual -- 1:30-4:30 at Freedom of Espresso, 115 Solar St., Franklin Square -- I will be happy greet you with at least a half-smile and a partial wave, since I'm friendly, just not oh-so-expressive :-)

Don't be afraid of the snow...see you there!

TGIO party

Why do we do Nanowrimo? That sense of accomplishment we get when we type word 50,000 and bring our novel to a satisfying conclusion that still leaves the reader yearning for more? The work habits and self-discipline that will enable us to produce a new 50,000 word novel each and every month for the rest of our natural lives? The sense of creativity that leads us to translate every minor event into another 1,667 words of scintillating prose?

No! We do it for the Thank God It's Over party!

And now, in the second half of November, it's time to figure out when and where we will have that party. I'm thinking the first weekend of December is best. That would be either Saturday, Dec. 6th or Sunday, Dec. 7th. Any thoughts on either of those days? Would an afternoon or evening get together be best? Any thoughts on location?

Let's hear your suggestions.

I inched past 25,000 words this morning and I want to be at least at 30,000 by the end of the write-in on Sunday. I need a little buffer as there are a couple of days coming up where I will get little to no writing done.

Liverpool write-in on Saturday, Nov. 15, 1PM - 4PM

It's halfway through the month and here's your chance to get to 25,000 words. We'll have a special write-in at the Homewood Suites, 275 Elwood Davis Road Liverpool, NY from 1-4 on Saturday, Nov. 15th. Many thanks to Sarah for setting this up.

You can park anywhere near the registration/lobby building. If you enter through the pool area you will be in the lodge area right away. If you enter through the front, you will have to go around the fireplace to get to the lodge.

There is usually coffee available but they get a little lax on weekends so you may want to bring your own if you can't live without it, just in case. There is a "suite shop" with drinks, snacks, microwaveable foodstuffs, and even tylenol for purchase.

If you have extension cords and/or power strips please bring them.

Address: 275 Elwood Davis Road Liverpool, NY. It's less than a mile from either 90 or 81.

Directions from 90: Get off at Electronics Parkway exit. Take a left on Electronics Parkway. Left at first traffic light: 7th North. Left at Elwood Davis Road (no stop sign or traffic light). Follow road to front of Homewood Suites. If you pass the Homewood Suites sign on the side of 7th North, you've gone too far

Directions from 81: Get off at 7th North Exit. Take a right on 7th North. Turn right at Buckley (traffic light). Turn left at first road = Elwood Davis Road (no stop light or stop sign), before construction, directly after the ice cream place. Follow road to front of Homewood Suites.
Write in suggestion

At our first meeting I suggested the Palace Cafe on James street.

http://www.palacetheatresyracuse.com/cafe_menu.php

Its a little smaller, but it has a great place to really relax and get your writing going. You could sit at the regular tables or the couches and easy chairs. I believe they have wireless internet as well.

The do not have hours on Sunday, but a Friday or Saturday one would work great for me. Friday around 6 pm, Saturday any time.

If any one would like to meet up there, I can defiantly go.
Veterans Day write-in, Tuesday, Nov 11

Hi all --

It was good seeing some of you again yesterday and meeting others of you for the first time. I logged about 3,400 words, more than doubling my total, so I'm excited for the momentum.

I, like some others, have tomorrow off, and am planning to head out to do some writing.

I am planning to head out to the Fayetteville Freedom of Espresso, which has a different setup, but more electricity, around 2:30 p.m. It is located at 128 W Genesee St. in Fayetteville.

There is free off-street parking, both next to the cafe and up the road a bit in the village's center.

For any questions about the location, directions, etc., you're better off e-mailing me at mail@joshshear.com than posting here -- I may or may not get a chance to check back during the work day today.

Hope to see you there!
Welcome!

Welcome Syracuse WriMo-ers! I hope you'll all take a moment and introduce yourself.

My name is Maurice. I'm a long-time Nanowrimo participant, an occasional winner, and a second year municipal liaison.

I'm planning on scheduling write-ins throughout November but there are a couple of complications:

Last year, there were two of us working as the MLs for Syracuse. Amy did tons of work getting stuff organized but she has left the area.

This year, I am likely to have less time for NaNoWriMo than ever before.

So ... If we're going to have regular write-ins, I'm going to need some help. If you're committed to doing Nanowrimo this year and want to help out, please let me know. I'm happy to share ML duties if you want to help at that level, but you don't have to be an ML to help.

Suggestions on good places to hold write-ins are welcome. We had mixed success last year with as many as five and as few as two writers gathered together to swill coffee and sling words.

If you have a favorite public place to write, you can host a write-in. All you have to do is get there a little early to grab a table, look writerly so the rest of us can find you, and help everybody get settled in for an afternoon or evening of writing.

Some people like to organize online write-ins with everyone in a chat room comparing word counts. That's not my thing, but if you want to organize something for our region just let me know.

I'm hoping to hear from a lot of Syracuse writers this year!
write-in for Sunday, Nov. 9th

Wow. We had a dozen people at yesterday's write-in, tens of thousands of words were written, and we may have even picked up a new participant. The folks at Freedom of Espresso couldn't have been nicer and they want us back.

So here's the question: Do we want to make the Freedom of Espresso on Solar Street our regular Sunday afternoon location?

We could still do other locations on Saturdays or weeknights. We can also get a car pool thread started if there are folks who'd like to come but need rides.

Let me know your thoughts as soon as possible. I'd like to finalize the next location in the next few days.

Thanks for the great turnout!
locations for future write-ins

We're all set for the Nov. 2nd write-in but let's hear some suggestions for future locations.

Sounds like we have a bunch of SU people doing Nanowrimo this year. Any good locations up on the hill? Last year, we did a weekday evening write-in at Funk n Waffles and another at the Recess Coffee House on Harvard Place. Any comments on returning to those locations?

How about the Armory Square Freedom of Espresso for another write-in? I don't think we used that location for an organized write-in last year but we did one there a couple of years ago. Any thoughts on other downtown locations?

Two of us had a very productive day at Irish Grounds up on Tipp Hill last year. I wouldn't mind doing another write-in there.

How about locations outside the city?

Remember, if you want to host a write-in at a time and place that suits you, just let me know and we'll get it on the official calendar and send out an announcement.

Writing about you

Hello all,
I'm new to NaNoWriMo and quite surprised I just stumbled upon it this year.

I have a slightly different writing project that I also need to complete before the end of the month and I was hoping you all could help me out. I am a graduate Arts Journalism student at SU and I would really like to write a piece about the Syracuse NaNoWriMo group for one of my classes.

Maurice has been kind enough to grant me an interview and I wanted to extend the invitation to everyone. I am particularly interested if you've been doing this for several years or if you are a student as well and trying to fit it in to a busy class schedule.

There is also a multimedia portion to the project which would include some sound recording and photographs. I was hoping to do that at one of the write-ins (preferably the upcoming one), but I wanted to make sure there were no objections first. Also, when your hands get tired of typing or you're at a little writing block, perhaps we could chat a little about your experience of writing a novel.

I am excited to meet all of you and I hope you can help me out. And maybe I'll actually get a chance to work on my 50,000 words too.

Thanks!
----------

SU On-Campus Write-in?

Hi Everyone!
I'm a student up on the Hill and I was thinking of hosting a write in maybe the starbucks on Marshall street sometime next week. Would anyone be interested? This week is a little hectic, but next week I would be totally down for maybe a two or three hour write in in the evening on maybe Tuesday or Wednesday next week (not the election day, heh)

If youve other suggestions to places as well, I'm all ears!
Syracuse write-in, Sunday, Nov. 2nd

We'll have our first official write-in on Sunday, Nov. 2nd at Freedom of Espresso, 115 Solar St. I'll be there at 1:30. They are open until 5PM on Sundays. Let me know if you expect to be there. If a large number of writers are planning to attend, I'll need to let the coffee shop know ahead of time.

I can't do a write-in on Saturday, Nov. 1st due to another obligation. Is there anyone that would like to organize a write-in for that day?
Syracuse kick off, Thursday Oct. 30th

We'll kick off Nanowrimo with a get-together at Clark's Ale House in downtown Syracuse (corner of Jefferson and Clinton) at 6PM on Thursday, Oct. 30th. I'll plan on getting there a little early to grab a couple of tables upstairs. Let me know if you're planning on attending and please let me know if you're under 21.

Syracuse kickoff get together

Over in the Welcome thread, Vance mentioned last year's kickoff get together that we had at Clark's downtown. It was a great opportunity to meet other writers, share some advice on making it through the month, and talk about our story ideas. Is there interest in doing something similar this year? When and where?

I think Wednesday, Oct. 29th or Thursday, Oct. 30th would be best for me. I also like a downtown location but I'm open to other suggestions.

Let's get some discussion on when and where we could do a kickoff party and see if we can arrange something.
