You have accomplished something that thousands and thousands of people around the world dream of. You have started a novel. You have given birth to characters, a setting and may even have a plot. They say you learn more...

...from your failures than from your successes. Personally, I suspect that may just be a way for people who fail to feel better about themselves, but I'm willing to take that comfort right now.

After three years doing NaNo, and three years winning, this year I didn't make it. I decided to quit last night at not-quite-30,000 words. It's been a rough month - we're in financial crisis right now so I've been panicking and trying to juggle what money we have while trying to figure out how to get more income, I've been having issues with my writing for several months now, I have a new puppy and significantly more livestock than previous years and instead of working a steady job I'm juggling several on-call, freelance jobs. Add to that the fact that I just wasn't as excited about NaNo this year, I started over on the 7th and I let procrastination stall me for large amounts of time, and I just didn't do very well.

So what did I learn this year?

- I learned that I can't take winning NaNo for granted.
- I learned that writing when I'm extremely anxious is difficult to impossible.
- I learned that plot alone is boring if I'm not willing to slow down and take time for character development or description.
- I learned that I CAN'T write "NaNo style" (without deleting, stopping, correcting or thinking about what to say next) - it makes me freeze up.
- I learned that I write best at night, which is a problem when I'm supposed to be up at dawn to do farm chores.
- I learned that writing 30,000 words in a month doesn't leave me burned out at the end the way writing 50,000 words does.
- I learned I really can't break the 1,000-words-an-hour barrier, at least not this year.

So I did learn a bit, and I got a new job this month as well, so I'm not terribly disappointed that I didn't win NaNo. I'm ready to keep writing and I'm developing a schedule to whittle down my projects in progress and start polishing up stories for submission. Congratulations to everyone who made it, and kudos to everyone who did their best. I hope to see you all at the TGIO party!

The Regional Word Count thread!

According to the Word Count Scoreboard, at the time of this post, Reno is currently at 162 (out of a possible 445 regions) with 67,664 words. That places us solidly in the top half of the regions posted! Good job so far!

I was hoping this thread could act as encouragement to get us further up on the list. I'm a slightly competitive sort of person -- checking the scoreboard is one of the ways I keep writing -- and I would love to get below 150 during some point in the month. Who's with me?

Per a message from our wonderful ML Guide:

If the time zone is wrong, the word count validator function could disappear too early and rob Wrimos of their ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. To set the time zone, users should go to My NaNoWriMo-->Edit user settings--> Locale settings/Time Zone-->select the current day and time from the drop down menu. The times are listed in military format so if it is 6 PM on a Thursday (which it is here in Oakland), I would select "Thursday, November 20, 2008 18:00."

Stalled?

Has anybody stalled out already? Or is it just me? Okay, I got off to a good start with the first chapter. Until today, though, I haven't written anything else. Blah! I have all sorts of ideas written down that need developing, but I'm stalled. Okay, enough complaining. I just need to get busy typing and typing and typing and hoping that the words will come and a plot will show up and everything will be fine--eventually. Yep, this appears to be the NaNo year when I get to meet the Great Stall head on and try and beat my way through it. Very different from previous years when things seemed to work out pretty well overall. My brain feels bloody and battered. Off to add that line to my novel---see where it goes. ;-)

Mid-Month Something Fun

Okay, now I know I'm not the only one a little behind and stuck. On the home page Chris talks about the 20ks being sloggy and I am in total agreement. So, time for some fun! Let's pick a small random section or piece of dialogue we've written during the last day (don't go too far back) and share it. Come on, I know I'm curious to read what everybody else is working on. Remember Kindergarten? It's FUN TO SHARE! I'll start:

"Azalea felt the earthworms’ slow dive and crawl tickling the roots of a starbite lily, a beautiful orange colored flower with dark brown spots on its petals. She felt the kiss of water from the earth being soaked into the roots. Feeling deeper into the heart of the flower, Azalea began to hum its song."

Don't forget, while you are backtracking DO NOT EDIT!

Weekend evenings??

I work weekends, 8-5 or later. That plus a 45 minute commute both ways leaves me with not so much time (or energy) to write during the weekends. BUT I really would like to have some writing support to help me make up SOME word count during those days. Anyone up for Fri/Sat/Sun evening write in? It wouldn't have to be every day, but maybe one day? And since I work in Reno, it would be better for me to be in Reno for the write in. Anyone?

I'd like to invite anyone who might be interested to join in on some games (mostly party type and word games) on Sunday at Round Table Pizza. We start at 11AM and continue for a couple of hours, so you can drop in anytime. If interested, post here, send me NaNo mail, or email me directly if we've traded email addresses already.

Afterward, we'll do have a Write-in, so bring your laptops. I'm going to see if I can arrange to get the back room at the library. If that doesn't work, we can go to the small coffeeshop in the Reno Town Mall.
