[STICKY] Weekly Urbana Writing Sessions - Wednesdays

Join us every Wednesday for weekly writing sessions at Urbana Cafe! (Alliteration not intentional. On the other hand...when you want to write more words, why not write on Wednesdays with other wonderful Wrimos?)

Urbana features fair-trade and organic coffee and is populated with more outlets than most cafes. Still, I'd suggest bringing a power bar if you have one, just in case. There is Internet available, if you choose to purchase a discount card. (The cards are a great idea if you plan on attending these sessions regularly, or if you take a liking to Urbana--with a card, you get a 10% discount on purchases, and every time you load $20 onto the card, you get a free drink!)

WRITING SESSION INFO:

Name: Urbana
Date: Every Wednesday!
Time: 6:00 - 10:00pm
Address : 1033 Bay St
Toronto, ON , M5S 3A5
Phone:(416) 960-1033

Map here: http://www.canpages.ca/page/ON/toronto/urbana-coffee/3951856.html

The simplest way to get there by TTC is to get off at Bay station and walk South down Bay St until you reach the cafe. It's on the left hand side of the street, right before St. Joseph St.

You can also get off at Wellesley station, and walk west on Wellesley until you reach Bay, and then walk North until you see Urbana Cafe on the right. (It's probably about the same walking time, but a little more complicated.)

Hope to see you there!

[STICKY] Thornhill Writing Session - Nov. 26

Still a little behind? <strike>Or... Well, you could just want to socialize like I'll be doing.</strike>

Thornhill Writing Session
Date: Thursday November 26
Place: Starbucks Yonge/Centre
--Address: 7787 Yonge Street
Time: 6:00-8:00pm

EDITED TO ADD: MAP LINK!

Please note that this is a different Starbucks location from the previous Thornhill sessions.

It can be easily reached by taking the Viva Blue, Yonge 99 or Brampton 77 north to Centre Street from Finch Station. If you're coming from the subway you will have to pay a double fare to get to this event.

Also, because it's a rather small Starbucks, if you could just drop a note here with whether or not you might be coming, so I can know how many people to expect (and know if we'll have to relocate to the Tim Horton's down the street) that would be awesome.

See you there!

Still in the game! We're all moving, steadily, towards the finish line. Who knew we could commit to 2+ weeks much less a whole month. One word at a time we continue to honor this commitment to ourselves. We all deserve a pat on the back and a huge hug!
DeathBot (prev nanobot) Suggestions... please submit.

Hi All.

The hot poker slabing Errol is getting a bit borring. Can you guys post different ways that you want Errol and others to die and I'll get them in!

Thanks!
Sean

MODERATOR'S EDIT FOR THE PURPOSE CLARIFICATION: Sean is referring to a chat in-joke: The nanobot is programmed to "kill" Errol in a variety of gruesome ways any time someone types "Errol" in the same sentence as "kill" or "die." It's slightly macabre but mostly harmless... kind of like the rest of us.

EDITED AGAIN TO ADD ERROL'S REMARKS: Oh btw, now that I'm in chat, I'm seeing how it should be formatted: Deathbot [present tense action to errol]. So it starts with deathbot, and then an action occurs in the present tense.

Carry on!

I'll post the results in this thread when we have at least 50 responses. I'll post the final results when we have a full quota of 100.

When the results from this year are in, we can compare it to '08 and see how things change over time.
Your Nano Soundtrack

How do you pick it?

In past years I've attempted to put together playlists based on the type of story I was writing, but now I am thinking, since I have NO idea what type of story that it will be, how can I put together a playlist?

And then I thought of this BRILLIANT idea.

I put my iTunes on random and the first 3 hours worth of songs that it picks, becomes my nano playlist and will set the tone for my book.... Not sure how it's going to work out, lol but I thought it would be fun to try.

Anyone else have any different ways of picking their playlists?

Allloo!

So, I was thinking it would be fun to have a radio show that you guys could listen to in the background while chatting and perhaps writing.

So... anyone want to call in and be interviewed? It's only a 30 minute show.

I don't know why I do all these things to keep me from writing. :D
10K in 5 hours challenge!

Some of you may remember this from last year. If not, here is the thread:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3439910

Basically, write 10K in five hours. I will be doing this on Saturday from 1-6, and of course you can write more than 10K if you're up for it. EVERYONE who participates and manages to go through at least two hours gets a hug, and EVERYONE who participates and hits more than 5K gets to be put on my Nano Hall Of Fame Page that I am in the process of making-which means you will be forever immortalized on LITHY'S BLOG (see below) and I will link to a random web page you want me to link to.

If Saturday 1-6 isn't good for you, if you do this challenge between now and the 21st at some point, YOU WILL STILL GET ON MY RANDOM PAGE OF AWESOME if you post your total here.

York U WEEKLY Writing Session! - Tuesdays

Hey guys, I know that I mentioned this in the "YU PEOPLE!" thread, but I figured that I'd start this as well, to make it a bit more official-looking and to hopefully get this stickied. =D (Oh, and - yes, this is Shadowood. I needed a name change. Long story.)

So!

We will be having writing sessions at Scott Library, hopefully in one of the larger study rooms, every Tuesday, starting at 1:30pm and ending around 3:30pm, possibly. I wouldn't be surprised if there will still be people around later, but I can't guarantee anything past 3:30. =D

I will also be writing in Calumet, Rm. 100 on Fridays, from 12pm-2pm, since I have my office hours then for Calumet College Council, so if you want someone to write with, feel free to join me. =D

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here, or send me a message, or what-have-you.

And there's a fairly good possibility that we're going to have a Word War between us and those silly UofT people. I'll try to keep you posted! =D
Karaoke Night - Nov. 28th

Alright, karaoke fans! Now that I've got all of the details settled, I can finally make the official post!

On Saturday, November 28th, 2009 starting at 6:30pm, I (Ren) will be hosting a karaoke night. This was one of my favourite events last year, and when I didn't see a repeat on the calendar this November, I took it upon myself to take over it for 2009. All Toronto Wrimos are welcome, but considering it is a bar atmosphere, it is sort of geared towards the older crowds (19+) though I don't believe anyone was IDed last year unless they were actually buying drinks.

I have decided to go with XO Karaoke again this year, because I'm actually vaguely familiar with it, having it been the venue for karaoke last year (I didn't attend the one in the summer, unfortunately!). I also believe it's closer to the subway station than the other choices (plus I don't particularly like to be downtown at night).

Ah, listen to me ramble...

XO is located near Christie Station on the Bloor-Danforth line (west of Yonge Street). I've got our room booked for four hours (6:30 to 10:30). The room - assuming it is around the same size as last year's - is big, but it's not going to fit a whole lot of people. It will probably accommodate everyone who wants to come, but if there are more than thirty attending, we'll probably start to have a space problem. But if we don't have enough people, it will cost us a bit more per person to pay for it. I'm estimating between $10 and $20 per person right now. Hopefully we'll be on the lower end! :)

So, I need you to RSVP in this thread to let me know if you are coming so I can size up the numbers!

XO Karaoke
693 Bloor Street West
(near Christie station)
Saturday, November 28, 2009
6:30pm to 10:30pm
Cost $10-20 per person
Overnight Writing Session! – Nov. 21-22

One of the most beloved of all Toronto NaNo events, the overnighter, is less than a week away!

For the second time, Errol has arranged for us to use the facilities at the daytime community drop-in centre Sanctuary Toronto, a converted church at 25 Charles St. E. – just two blocks South of Yonge and Bloor. It's easily accessible by subway and there is a green P parking lot right across the street.

Arrive at (or after) 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 21st and write the night away until the morning of the 22nd, when we all go home and collapse in our beds to dream of our dazzling characters, fantastical novel worlds, and the impressive word count we've racked up overnight. If you can't stay the entire night, join us for a few hours and leave whenever you'd like.

Here's the deal. The building will be locked – it is a private location, and we'll only be letting NaNoWriMo people in. In order for us to open the doors for you, you'll have to call either Natalia's or Victoria's cell number so that we'll come to the front of the building and let you in. You might want to take note of both of our numbers and/or some of the other event mod numbers on the calendar, just in case one of us is away from the phone at the moment you arrive.

Feel free to bring laptops, pillows, junk food, real food, tea, coffee makers (the one at the location sucks) and other forms of sustenance to share – last year we ended up with an impressive snack table. Please note that there will be NO alcohol allowed in the Sanctuary.

If we haven't met you at a prior NaNo event, it would be much appreciated if you could RSVP in this thread, or feel free to post any questions below.

Sanctuary Toronto
25 Charles St. E. (just South of Yonge and Bloor) - Map and Google Streetview
10 p.m. on Nov. 21 – 8 a.m. on Nov. 22
http://www.sanctuarytoronto.ca

EDITED TO ADD: If you have a surge-proof power bar and/or an extension cord of any kind and are willing to bring them, please do! We may or may not need more, but I remember scrambling last year to make sure we had enough power cables to reach everyone. THANKS!
Pancake Event - Dec. 15th

Hey, everyone!

The Golden Griddle at Yonge/Carleton has All-You-Can-Eat pancakes, really cheap - last year, when a small group of us went there, it was $4. I'll do a, uh, test run beforehand to confirm the price. :D

Anyway - This is just going to be a very casual social event, sort of a "hey, it's been a couple weeks, how's it going". I'll call the restaurant tomorrow and ask how far ahead we'll need an accurate number for reservations, and make a reservation thread when it's necessary.

For now, you can RSVP here if you're certain you're going, or wait, or whatever! :D
CD Exchange Reviews

Hey everyone.

I had a great time at the Halfway Get-together and the CD Exchange. And yes, I just got home from it and I'm still charged with the energy from it, and since I'm going to be up all night anyway, I'm doing my personal reviews of all the CDs I received at the CD exchange. Track by track, CD by CD.

I may not get to them all tonight, but we'll see how far I go. I apologize to everyone who's names (and usernames) I mess up or can't remember. I suck with names. Hopefully you all remember my reading (about the boy and his father eating fried chicken and talking about spies and ghosts)

My first two reviews are going to be on my two CDs. I didn't include a track listing for either, so this is the next best thing.

Also, I invite everyone to reply and post their own reviews/opinions on the CDs we all got.

So.... let's get started!
U of T Weekly Writing Sessions - Mondays

Hi guys!

I'll edit the date on this every week, but otherwise the info's pretty much going to be the same.

Info:

First Session!
November 2, 1-4pm
UTSG* Kelly Library
113 St Joseph St
St Joseph and Bay

We'll meet up in the main floor café/study area. When you go in the front doors of the library, just hang a sharp left. The room's full of tables and squishy chairs, there's usually a book sale of sorts going on, and there's a little café in the back corner.

This event is open to everyone! I wanted to make that clear, just in case anyone had doubts because of the location.

Directions:

Easiest way to get there would probably be to take the Bloor/Danforth line to Bay station, then either walk the block south, or jut take the bus down to St. Joesph Street. I think the bus comes fairly often, but the walk's only about five minutes anyway.

Walk west on St. Joesph. Kelly Library is on the south side - there are big banners on the front, declaring it's name, and there's usually a sign out front announcing the "Kelly Café" which is in the room we're meeting up in. If it helps, the pedestrian crosswalk on St. Joesph is basically right in front of the library.

Also: If anyone has a spare power bar, would you mind hauling it with you? I have a small one that I'll be bringing, but a "just in case" spare would be awesome.

*University of Toronto, St. George. In case you were wondering.
----------

My work schedule this year excludes me from many of the set writing sessions for downtown Toronto. :( This makes me sad.

The "hardcore" writing session. No messing around with nice ambiance and coffee. Just you and a hundred other sweaty people stuck in a large open room. Ignore the free WiFi, it doesn't exist. Neither do green pandas. I'm just saying.

Toronto, ON , M5S 3A5

Brampton Writing Session - Nov. 20

The third of our four weekly Friday night writing sessions in Peel is happening this week! Ryan will be busy doing that baby thing (at least we hope for Rebecca's sake he will be), so I will be your on-site NaNo hostess (and I have a sign to prove it!)

This session takes place at the Second Cup at Orion Gate. It is just west of the actual intersection of Steeles Ave and First Gulf Blvd, in the plaza where Michaels, and the LCBO (and a bunch of other stuff) are. If memory serves, there is a MacDonald's right next door.

The address is 543 Steeles Avenue East, if you want to Google Map it...or you could just click this: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=543+Steeles+A.... The session is scheduled from 6PM to 9PM but the store is open until 11PM if anyone wants to extend the session.

Looking forward to seeing some of the Brampton/Mississauga wrimos again!

Oh, and just in case you were worried... the Bee will beeeeeee there!

Word War Bot on Chat.

Hi All,

deathbot has mutated over the last day. He's now got a few new deaths.

But more importantly it's also a Word War bot.

From anywhere in the channel type !help to get some help info on the bot.

To create a word war, use the following command:
!startwar # ## -> create a war for # minutes starting in ## minutes !status -> list wars that are in progress or not yet started

If you start a word war more than 2 minutes in the future, a warning will be sent out 2 minutes before the war starts

To join a ww, which means you will be private messaged for a word war warning, ww starts, and ww finishes.
!joinwar -> join a word war so you get msg'ed on start

To see what wars are ongoing, either not scheduled or in progress, use the following command:
!status

Please use this thread to post any bugs you may find.

Thanks!
Sean

Shout out for sitting down to write today!

Maybe we could have a shout out for all of us who sat down and wrote today. Sometimes that's all we can do and sometimes the numbers don't reflect the amount of effort it took for an individual to get comfortable enough to let the words flow. So anyone with ten words or more deserves a shout out! Ten words, maybe a sentence, possibly a paragraph. Way to go all of us. Congratulations for showing up to the page. This does not discount those of you who have hit the major k's. You show us it's possible and inspire us to keep going. Congrats to you for forging the trail!
