Here are a few gadget, that help you writing or to track your progress, while working on your novel.
I will probably write using this software:
Q10 is a very simple text editor. It is freeware, so no cost. Besides seeing your total word count as you go, you can also set partial word counts - for each writing session if you want. And you can set a timer alarm, that will go off after a specified amount of minutes - I think that's quite handy, if you want to for example write for 20 minutes. It's an EXE file though and they do not ogff a Mac version.
Also there are lots of excel files out there to track your progress manually. Here is a few that I have come across so far:
