This is not so much of plea for help as it is an attempt to survey NaNo-ers' takes on... "digressive fiction." OK, that's not the perfect term for it... hmm, how about "post-modern fiction that frequently digresses or devolves into philosophical rants, passages that seem like spontaneous journaling, beat-like prose poetry and/or stories that may have nothing to do with initial (or more probably non-existant) plot."
This was where I found myself heading during last year's NaNo (my first) after having read the first two-thirds of "No Plot? No Problem." It felt like the "right place" for me; but, as always, I still had serious doubts. Unfortunately, my efforts got sand-bagged by a pre-planned trip to Santa Fe for an old friend's wedding -- so, no, I didn't "win."
If I had to site authors whose works strike me as closely corresponding to what I'm blathering about I'd have to go with: some of Vonnegut, Joyce, Flan O'Brien, William Borroughs, William Vollman, Kathy Acker, to some extent Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea in the Illuminatus! Trilogy, perhaps Mark Z. Danielewski -- and I'm quite fond of the rants of Rev. Ivan Stang.
So what am I after? Well, I guess I'm wanting to hear from others who write similar stuff. Are there any other authors you can suggest? Is this writing "worthwhile" or just a copout for someone who can't think of (or decide on) a traditional plot to commit to? That sort of thing.
