Sprint to the End Party / Carpool Thread

NOTE: Use this thread to arrange carpools and RSVP!

=========================================

Helloooooooooo everyone!

So Heidi and I were talking today... As we tend to do... profusely...and not unusually...

The Sprint to the End Party does need to take place. Heidi hosted the Kickoff at her house, so we agreed that having the TGIO/STTE party at my house was the fairest thing to do. Many people have offered to help set up Carpools from Everett Station to Seattle in order to get people shuttled in appropriately with minimal mess. Parking is free on the street on Sundays, so it's perfect.

Plus? I have seating, a full-sized kitchen, and a bathroom that's (relatively) clean. Woohoo!

So. The STTE party will begin at 10 AM tomorrow at my house and will end "officially" at 6pm.

My address is:

714 7th Avenue #415
Seattle, WA 98104.

It is a secure building, so those attending will need to call me upon arrival at 206-434-9744 to be let in!!

I'll set up a Carpool thread for you all to get together and arrange whom's going with whom. Anyone who wants to make it on their own should be okay, too, parking and transpowise. To get to my house, go South on I-5 and exit on the James Street Exit. Cherry will be the first or second light down, take a left on Cherry. Take a left on 7th. My apartment building is the Zindorff Apartments - it's a large, sand-colored 1920s building.

Please bring:

Something to share - food, beverages, or snacks!
Floor pillows if you have them - there IS seating, but if we get more than 10, I'm screwed.
Your novel, in whatever form it is.

Good luck with your wordcounts if you are NOT attending... TC!

Interested in Writing Year-Round?

Hi everyone!

There has been a considerable amount of interest in creating a year-round writers' group in the area. I have created the following Yahoo Group:

Year Round Writers' Group

At this point it's an effort to be able to keep track of each other after the boards die... at least long enough to get an initial meeting going, at which point we can keep the Yahoo Group or ditch it. For now, then, go check it out, join the group, take the polls and we'll try to get things rolling.

From the comments that I've read and heard, I envision this group to be of a critiquing and motivational purpose. Works would be NaNo-Novels (past, present and future), or other works that the writer is willing to share or looking for help with. Please chime in if you were thinking of something else. I've not considered the format that this would take, so it's wide open.

Cheers!
Heidi
----------
-Everything turns out right in the end, so if it's not right.... it's not the end.

Hey everyone!

I've heard some grumbles about having the STTF event in Seattle at my place, which is fine - I realize some people don't want to drive 20 miles to write. And thus! I pose to you... where would you like to have this event? Since the last day of Nano lands on a Sunday, this is the perfect day to host a potluck and settle in for the long haul.

Please give an indication if you're planning on coming, even if it's late, so I don't give all the chairs away like I did last night to the book club group.

Hey everyone,

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the wordcount validator is OPEN!

Go to your homepage, then click, under Edit: "Novel Info". In there, you'll find a place to cut and paste your novel. When it's pasted, scroll to the bottom and click "Submit".

If the validator shorts you words, panic not! You still have a few days to get your wordcount up! I boosted mine by 3K to fit the word validator (stupid thing shorts me EVERY year), so don't feel bad.

If you're not quite ready... you still have time! Keep typing!
A 21K word day

11 hours, one can of Lipton Raspberry tea, one little bag of M&M's and 21K.
The action is heating up, and even at this late date, there are new characters and plot twists that I never imagined. I don't know yet what's up with the printing company that did the flier for the stolen portable toilet, but they're up to their necks in this somehow (and all because I had to order business cards at the Dreaded Day Job). There's yet another kidnap victim (would the FBI allow my agent to stay on the case if one of the victims was his own mother? I'll have to capitalize on his awesome, infallible skill at judging people's characters, so they can't afford to take him off.). There's a new bicyclist (who was sitting across the table from me at a DDJ meeting) who has to be written into every street scene, back to the beginning. And I woke up this morning knowing exactly who stole the trebuchet and what they intend to use it for ... and it makes such perfect sense!! Oh, and as for who murdered the 4 groundskeepers at the Botanical Gardens? Somebody I never would have suspected in a million years! (Planned as a very minor character, but at his first appearance I knew he was guilty as sin of something, I just never dreamed it was serial murder!).

My boss at the DDJ asked me to contribute to the company's United Way fund drive auction with a certificate toward an autographed copy of my novel when printed! I thought that was a pretty nice compliment (I mentioned to him that I'm so busy this year that not one word of the NaNo novel has been written on company time ... leaving him pondering if any of last year's was!) The drawing is Tuesday, with the understanding that this prize may not be available for a couple (or four?) months due to editing. It's cool because now I have to finish it and get it into print, no excuses, no procrastination ... and also because whoever wins it, is going to find themselves in a really major part, which will show up in one of the rewrites!

This has been such a blast this year!! Even if I am malnourished, exhausted, and completely braindead!!

Write on, crew!!
[Pst, Heidi, Mark] Many Beautiful, Wonderful Thank Yous...

...to everyone who joined in for my surprise birthday luncheon.

Heidi and Mark orchestrated everything, even going so far as to send out an all-Nanomail that said "Don't Read this, Claire!" If I had had the time to read it, I probably would have done it! But... I've been atrociously busy lately and was genuinely surprised when a (pink) balloon appeared over my shoulder.

So, thanks everyone, for attending and making it that much more special; I really haven't done anything interesting for my birthday in about ...oh, ten years ;) Thank you ESPECIALLY to Heidi and Mark - you two are great friends; what more could a girl ask for?

I can't easily make any of the weekday or Saturday write-ins, but I should have some free time for a few hours on Sunday. Would anyone like to join me in the food court of the Alderwood Mall from noon-ish to 2 or 3-ish? I'm thinking I'll set up shop over by the fireplace.
My Computer is Back!!!!

Okay, so I might have posted something about this, or maybe only a few of you know this, but...
I spilled a peppermint mocha on my laptop at the Starbucks in Fred Meyer when at a write-in. Ruined they keyboard (very sticky, they are), and got it into my battery compartment, etc...
So I actually got it sent off on Tuesday by UPS to Circuit City's computer fixers MicroMedics (yes this is a blatant ad for them) and I got it back Thursday (although not really cuz I wasn't here to sign for it and had to have it redelivered) and Here I am writing again! YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! I put this matter on the prayer chain at my church on Sunday asking that my computer be fixed fast and returned faster. Can't imagine it being done any faster than 3 days! So, hopefully I'll be able to come Saturday at the write-in, can't make it tonight cuz I'm in charge of game night at my church once a month and that's tonight. But I will have some time to write later and almost all day tomorrow and after church on Sunday so... with any luck I'll get to the halfway point by Monday. (crossing all fingers, toes and limbs, looking like a pretzel sortof and of course asking for prayer on this matter as well) Anyway, just want to give Heidi and Mark especially a big thank you for trying to hook me up with one of their older laptops, unfortunately it didn't have Office Works, so didn't get anywhere with that. Nonetheless, the attempt to help was very appreciated!!! Beyond ML duties too (I think)!
K so here I go..........................
Sad for NaNo, but good news anyhow

I got accepted into JobCorps! I'm leaving (hopefully) on the 18th of this month.

So, there are a few arrangements to make. I need to stay home and pack all my stuff, so I can't host any more write-ins. I might be able to make it to one to pass on the torch (Heidi gave me an extra set of plot ninjas, and I have some other stuff that is useful).
And, if anyone has any spare boxes in good condition, I would greatly appreciate them. Copy paper boxes are great, but I'll take whatever you can give me. We can probably arrange for pick-up at a write-in.

I'm sad to be leaving in the middle of NaNo, and I think I'll have a chat with the planning people about their horrible timing, but I am very excited for this opportunity. It's two years of vocational training, and I'm sure it will change my life for the better. Wish me luck! (Or, if you're religious, please pray for me. I'm sure the vocational training won't be easy all the time)

And good luck to all the rest of you on winning NaNo!
Can I get a ride from Snohomish to the write in tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday?

Hey,
So my roommate's brakes are so bad she can't drive her car so she's borrowing mine so she can get to work, which is when the write ins are happening tomorrow and Saturday, unfortunately. I live right outside Snohomish (on the Monroe side) and can help pay for gas. So leave a reply or e-mail me at modernday@mac.com if you can help me in my dilemma and we can figure it out from there.
Man did I ever screw up.....

Ok, I'm getting a bit discouraged. I had an idea in my head of the type of story I wanted to write and knew I wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo, but I forgot that NaNoWriMo started in November, and I forgot it was November until the 9th.
So I signed up for NaNoWriMo a third of the way in. Yeah, Mistake #1. I've got about 3000-3500 words, I'm way behind. I've been writing on the bus in to work in the morning and on the way home, sometimes on my lunch break, and sometimes when I'm sitting at home. I'm extremely shy about sharing my work, so hubby doesn't know I'm doing NaNoWriMo (my dirty little secret) and basically I've been hiding it, mostly because I don't want to share if he asks.
So yeah, my main characters are sitting in a garden talking, and its awful dialogue. I know that December is for editing, once I get going it will be better, etc. but looking at my low word count and my "i don't know where I want to go with this, i so totally didn't plan this novel, I thought "I'll write a book like "Twilight," but more realistic, and I only barely know the basic plot there, I don't know where I'm going with this, man did I ever screw up big time...." attitude. Ew.
So, maybe I can get hubby to watch our toddler for a few hours on the weekend if people would like to meet to chat and write. How about the food court in the Alderwood Mall? Anyone up for it? I'm thinking Sunday (11/16) around noon-ish, have a little lunch, stomp out a few thousand words?
A PNW Night of Writing Dangerously??

How about doing a write-in at the same time as the SF gathering? I could be up for an all-nighter to lend some morale support (and maybe find a way to raise a few bucks) to our California cohorts. Anybody else interested? Ideas for locale/logistics (as if we won't have enough of those to worry about in our novels!).
