As you might have noticed in the announcement of our rivalry with BC::Elsewhere, I've been thinking for some time about what to call our merry band of writers. We should have a name that incorporates NaNoWriMo, of course, but there should also be something Albertan about it. And more than just that, something that isn't too closely mirrored in Calgary and Edmonton. We need something that conveys our geography, our history, and our natural resources. Oh, and if it sounds impressive, that's a bonus.

My suggestion for our group name: The Alberta Wrimosaurs!

So, what do you think?

The only trouble I have with Wrimosaurs is envisioning their tiny little arms reaching the keyboard, but how silly, obviously they wrote with quills back then.

Good name Aquadeo - and way to get things done; I notice how you got those two groups settled on a date and location too.

So who is drawring the mascot?

Thanks, Diane!

Don't forget, everyone -- there was more than one type of dinosaur, so we can be creative and have as many different mascots as we want! Here are some ideas:

  • A writer struggling with the weight of a brontosaurus on his shoulders. Naturally, the bronto is clearly labelled, "50,000 words".
  • A pteranodon with a fountain pen for a head.
  • An ankylosaurus covered in typewriter keys for armor, with an old-fashioned typewheel for a club.
  • And, of course, Diane's Tyrannosaurus Rex, not needing its tiny arms to write at all, for its thundering roar commands thousands of helper monkeys, all typing away fearfully at thousands of typewriters.
  • Of course, quills work just as well, and they're even preferred for personal correspondence.

However, I'm horrible with graphics, so I must leave the challenge to my fellow wrimosaurs. If you can create pictures of any of these, or any of your own design, post them up here, so that we all can marvel at your work!

Hahaha, that is the best name ever.

I'd love to help with the graphics, but I sort of have a disability when it comes to computer graphics.

Okay, I solved the graphics problem by going low-tech! Here you go: the Alberta Wrimosaurs in their native habitat...

If nothing else, I hope you appreciate the fact that a grown man held a tea party with stuffed animals in a busy Starbucks just to get these pictures.

On the bright side, now everyone can use them! Make up some captions, or come up with names for these two -- I'd love to hear your ideas! (I'm leaning towards Tyrrell and Rosie, myself...)

A friend of mine does a webcomic called Fuzzy Knights, and his characters are all stuffed animals (the knights part comes from the fact that they play Dungeons & Dragons!). Actually, I think he wrote a Fuzzy Knights story for his NaNoWriMo entry last year... Anyway, I've got to show him these photos (where did the dinosaurs come from -- I am falling instantly in like with them!).

Oh, and don't worry about a guy and two dinosaurs having a tea party in public -- the FK characters are a bunny, a cat, and two teddy bears -- one green and one violet. I'd say it would be considerably more "macho" to be seen in public with dinosaurs! ;-)
