A funeral home director is being stalked by an undead corpse. Toward the end of the story it's revealed that the guy is a necrophile and had his way with the corpse while dressing it at the funeral home. The corpse is a little obsessive and believes she is in love.

I think it could be funny. It all depends on how over-the-top the corpse's obsession gets and you don't cross the line into some sort of horror story with a corpse obsession. It's definitely got funny possibilities in the idea.

Well, it's sick, but it could be funny. Funny like..."oh, haha, glad that wasn't me!"

My vote's on funny... but funny in the same vein as the Cryptkeeper in Tales from the Crypt. Oh, the Cryptkeeper, with such classic comments as "I love a girl that gives you head... AND LETS YOU KEEP IT! HAHAHA!"

Yeah.

If you can't laugh at everything, don't bother laughing at anything, right? Sounds awesome to me.

I like the idea- it would be nice if the undead wooed rather than stalked- make the corpse start sending dead flowers- leaving a decayed quiche in the oven, love letters carved on tomb stones etc- for me sick+imagination= funny

I love this idea. Would love some kind of scene where the corpse is mooning over the undertaker to her friends, i.e skeletons, rats, death..

I think it could be funny. The successes of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Pushing Daisies" are pretty good indicators that people are loosening up a bit about black humor. What's really important is whether it makes you laugh. It will only work if you're delighted by it and have fun writing it.

The more I come back to this thread, the more I think this might be the most brilliant plot idea on this entire site. So much so that I've sort of stolen it. My narrator is a Netflix-type envelope. He finds himself in the apartment of this couple on the verge of breaking up. He realizes that he's in love with the female. But unlike the corpse, he has no way of expressing it as he can't talk. So thanks for the inspiration. Since we're both on Chicago's word war team, it helps us both. :)

That's funny!

The way you describe the premise, I'm not sure if it's immediately funny, to me. Right now, it sounds more like a premise than anything else, and putting the premise ahead of your characters in comedy is, to me, a dangerous move.

Hahaha knowing me I would take it a step further and make it an insane perverted envelope.

My story so far focuses more on the funeral home director, but he's still not the main character. The main character is his neighbor who is observing the whole mess. The funeral home guy is kind of a weirdo who tells outrageous and vague stories about being stalked by the corpse, while the MC debates whether or not he should intervene. Meanwhile, the corpse is going on a string of murders, mostly people who have slighted the necrophile in the past, so he becomes a prime suspect in their grizzly murders.

I guess maybe the corpse rescues him from jail at one point in the story, and towards the end we find out that some blatantly racist death metal dude named Timmy Lovecraft got his hands on a Necronomicon e-book on his iphone and has been trying to bring corpses back to life reanimator style.

The obsessive corpse is the part that's funny. The necrophiliac simply gets you to the corpse. I like the earlier idea of dead flowers, etc. The corpse probably also has a group of girl buddies - Sex in the City like - who give advice. This also has the advantage of letting you go into corpses vs. zombie territory if you want. Does the necrophiliac work his way up to corpses from, say, dead chickens? Is there a way to make the necrophiliac funny too? Perhaps make him a little more human?

Nothing is ever so sick it isn't still funny.
Nothing is ever so tragic it isn't still funny.

I say this as the person who laughed at my grandfather's funeral and owns way way too many Slave Labor Graphics comic books.

Go for it!
