It is a meeting that is set up in a specific place at a specific time where NaNoers can meet one another, offer encouragement and write. Check out the MD Forum and look for a listing of Write-in in your local area. You can also check out the calendar they have posted somewhere (you'd have to ask someone else where that is cause I don't know) and it will show all the scheduled Write-ins thus far. Hope that helped.

Can we sticky this thread for our crablets?

And while we're at it, can we unsticky the kick-off party threads that are a bit, um, out of date?

What is thread?

How long does it take for the NaNo robot to produce the word count? (I put it in there at least half an hour ago and there is still 0 down for my word count on my profile page.)

Does anyone ever post a picture?

Thanks!

A thread is a name for a topic with replies - you start a topic and you start a thread of discussion!

When you enter your wordcount in your author profile, make sure you click the Submit button all the way at the bottom. The word count shows up right away.

If you are coping and pasting your words in for validation, I don't know how long it takes, but knowing that novel validation takes no time, I should think a shorter version should also happen right away. 1/2 hour is too long. Again, make sure you clicked Submit at the bottom of the page.

Many people have photos in their Author Profiles (Mine is in and is from this past July, at my Dad's house in Hawaii). Not everyone feels like posting pics of course, for privacy issues or other concerns, or they just don't feel like it. But many of us have.

Whoops - I missed this! Obviously we unstickied the kick-off threads - the 270 one keeps popping up because people were having a discussion on it.

I can ask Cybele to sticky - or do you think it is too late?

The first NaNoWriMo occurred in 1998 in the Bay region of California. However, this is the largest NaNo so far.

Hi Greg,

You can find a cool history of NaNo in the About section of the site.

1999 is when Chris Baty and crew started this crazy pursuit!

I have unfortunately been hiding under a rock for the last 8 years as NaNoWriMo grew in popularity. I seriously missed all deadlines, but would love it if anyone involved in this project could point me to ongoing writing groups in the DC, Annapolis, Southern Maryland area. I need a kick in the pants to push me to do what I love to do. I will certainly look forward to next year when I can participate in this wonderful event. But, until then, please help!!!

And, one question: What keeps people from writing their novel all year and submitting it on Nov. 30? Just curious.

Thank you!

Heidi

I can't help with specific writing groups, but I'm sure if you Google writers groups in Maryland, you will come up with something. But the biggest motivator to get you to write is YOU! If you love it, they you HAVE to do it - it is in you to do it.

As to your question, NaNoWriMo is based on an honor system. We are all doing this for ourselves. There is no money involved, no tangible reward except the knowledge we have completed what we set out to do, kept our word, and have a large, messy novel somewhere on our hard drives! Yes, we can get a cute little icon and paper certificate, and the NaNo validator won't know if we cheated. But as they say, if you want the little icon and paper so bad you will cheat to get it, then you need more help than we can provide. There may be cheaters out there, but most of us are in this for the journey, and you can't really join in with everyone else and get it if you write at other times then just submit it. The icon and paper are for doing it in 30 days, not 6 months!

We look forward to having you participate with us next year!

As this is National NOVEL Writing Month, I thought the best answer came from the FAQ on the site:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/402678

So maybe if your novel rhymed ... !

Shadow,

It's too late for an update. The online updates for word count and excerpt were disabled at the end of November. Sorry, but you'll have to wait for next year's Nano now. Or ScriptFrenzy coming up in April.

Thanks,

Joe

Shadow,

I just realized that my last reply might sound harsh. Of course you can keep writing, keeping track of your word count, but the site's features are turned off at the end of November.

There are a few people around the state with hopes and plans for continuing writing groups in 2008, so you can check into finding "authorly" support, encouragement, etc. that way, even if the site's official features are turned off.

Thanks,

Joe
