Hi, does anyone know if Mei Lan would be a good given name for a Chinese girl born in southern China (place undecided) sometime in the 1870s? Her family name is Chen.

Also, anyone familiar with Shantou know if there was ever a passenger ship route between Shantou and the Western US in the same time period?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any help. ;)

If her family name was Chen, her full name would be Chen Mei Lan.

Ermm, all the chinese people I've met usually have 2 letters in their name. Taiwan and Hong Kong has 3 though.

No idea about 1870.

Three character names are getting much more common these days, Chen Mei Lan would be fine in a modern book. For an older setting, Chen plus one character would be better.

Shantou to the west.... I don't think so? But I will ask. I'm sure it would go from Shantou to Taiwan and then the US, since that seems to me the best route. But I will ask and look it up.
