Is this happening to anyone else? I had a new character appear out of the blue yesterday and suddenly he's part of a major plot point. It was strange! This happens to me a lot, though, and they usually end up being my most interesting characters.

Yep, I recently had an old flame of my female MC show up at the spa, just sort of out of the blue several days ago. Turns out he is integral to the story, so I'm glad he showed up.

Yep me too. In fact nearly 50% of my characters are bit parts who won't stay away. I sort of introduced them for depth in scenes and so on and suddenly they are all vital to my plot!! Glad I'm not the only one. I did think I was losing it a little. Apparently not. Well at least not in this case, anyway!

Yep it happened to me with a casual bystander who was walking his dog. Suddenly, a huge part of the story! Weird how that happens.

New characters are just fascinating, but then I worry that they really won't come back into the plot smoothly and I'll end up with several short stories instead of one novel. Anyone else have this angst?

Some guy named Donny popped up out of nowhere one day and decided he wanted to talk to my MC about the evils of society. He's a bit annoying and doesn't fit into the story very well, but I made him an honorary important character since he saved my wordcount.(: I'll work it out later.

Oh, yes. Several.
1.) Stanford popped out of nowhere. His only purpose was to tease the FMC1 ONCE and then disappear. As it turns out, he gives her a locket that became a plot point.
2.) Tinim the War Advisor. Didn't even need to exist, suddenly popped in, and now he's the advisor to the MMC1. It's amazing.
3.) Timothy the Treasure Hunter. I don't even know where he came from, he just came in from the clear blue sky and decided he needed to use MMC1's leg to get back up a crevice, throwing him into the plot.
4.) Spirits galore - when did these come in, I'm not sure. o.o

This happened a lot this month. Probably because my novel was very loosely planned to begin with.
1) Teak appeared because I heard the name once and liked it. I still don't quite know what she's going to do, but whatever.
2) Tomas. Showed up early on, don't know what I'm going to do with him. He's a cocky bastard, very fun to write.
3) Finn. Finn appeared yesterday in a plot twist that no one saw coming--especially me. Now my main character, Illya, has an entire long back-story that answers a lot of questions about him and justifies his self-loathing.
4) Pernille. Came along as soon as Finn surprised me. She has not been properly introduced, but she exists.
Somehow it was the appearance of all these characters that got me writing, so it must be a good thing.
