Hooray! Just after midnight I got my purple bar and certificate! It's taken me this long to download Adobe 9.2 so I can type in my details instead of putting them in by hand like last year.
There doesn't seem to be a winner's T-shirt this year?

It looks as if we're allowed to upload from the 25th to the 30th. That would be good, it would save us from that desperate last-minute panic with everyone trying to upload on the last day. I'm on 77,505 so about an hour's work will take me up to my personal nano goal of 80,000. The book will be about 83,000 in the end I think, I might even get it completed by the 30th.

TGIO party/Delta concert--small issue?

Turned 25, Dad bought me a ticket to Delta's Christmas concert. Thankfully is same day as TGIO party.

I'm planning on coming to the party, but transport between between the two venues is a bit tricky, seeing as it's a Sunday night. Was wondering if anyone here was also going to the concert and wouldn't mind giving me a lift or would be leaving before 8pm and could give me a lift to Central Station... it would be much appreciated.

[ML Announcement] Melbourne vs. Sydney -- It's Official!

The region rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney is legendary. Forget the AFL, the Melbourne Cup, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race -- it's all about the word count at the end of November.

This year, we're putting our money where our mouths are.

During November, the MLs of both regions will be collecting donations at write-ins and other events. At the end of the month, all monies gathered will be donated to NaNoWriMo in the name of the winning region -- that's the region with the highest average word count per writer, just to make things fair.

It's yet another incentive to crank out those words during November. In the end both regions will benefit by helping keep NaNoWriMo running for another year. All you have to do is chip in what you can afford to -- and of course write, write, write!

I’m going to find myself a table in a café on King St, Newtown on Sunday 1st. Probably 3-5pm. Anyone wanna join me and we can give each other a boost up to start our word count this month.

I've a couple of fave cafés with free wireless. But will decide which one when I get an idea of how many peeps are interested in joining me.

So we had our first write-in this evening, a small informal gathering that went rather well. Everyone increased their wordcount and we all made new friends. I want to give a big thanks to Jimbot, Rubia and Lanthir_imladiell for joining me.

Hi Darren, thanks for the good wishes. When I was at NSWWC doing my volunteering last Tuesday, I spotted the blue thing. There is a doorway to the right of the office door, which leads into a short corridor which leads into the library. To the right of the doorway into the library itself, are some bookshelves, and the Blue Thing was at the top of those. Have a good write-in! I'm on 70,008 at present, waiting to top this up later today. Cheers, Cris.

Hi folks, thanks for your company but i won't be coming tomorrow or the following week. Tomorrow will be too hot, and the following week there is Freecon out at Bankstown - hope to see some of you there!
A lot of people seem to be going to the Saturday meeting at funky cafe.
I've hit the 70,000 mark so will easily make it to my personal goal of 80,000. I don't think I'll do Nano again. Got the t-shirt already!
I hope you all achieve what you want to achieve. I think you will manage extremely well without me, and I will manage without you, as I write more comfortably on my own anyway.
I forgot to tell you all - in the Double Room downstairs there are hundreds of books, some of them almost new, which can be bought for a gold coin donation which you drop into a letterbox thingy by the office door. There are lots of fiction titles, we are currently separating out a scifi and a crime section. There are also some very good non-fiction ones including literature studies and biographies of writers etc., which might be good for those of you studying creative writing. Buy buy, buy!

I know some other Sydneysiders have finished, but we didn't have a thread up about it yet, so here it is!

Well it's 1:25am on Thursday 19th Nov, 2009. I've just staggered across the line, but there is still so much more story to be told. I'll attempt to carry on, cos we needs the words in the fight for Sydney's honour, but it's good to have made the finish line once again, depsite heavy workloads this week and a persistant cold/flu.

So post your thoughts of your time writing, and how you feel finishing!

Hey Sydney NaNo's :)

Just a general question as to whether or not there's a Sydney Nano IRC channel where we can challenge each other with word wars, and encourage each other for those times when we can't get together for an actual write-in. Over the past few nights I've been a welcome guest in the Melbourne Nano IRC channel, and it's been pretty good for my word count.

Even if there isn't one, I think it would be a good idea. I know it seems like such a thing would take away from writing time, but I'm truly a believer in how much something like that helps motivate you to get that one extra word. It's like the benefit of a write-in in the comfort of your own home!

Dear Neighboring Regions (and Australia),
Greetings from fly, the ML for NaNo Nashville. This year, we are having our own ginormous write a thon, which we'll be holding the same time those out in Cali are having theirs (well, mostly). We would very much like you all to come. In fact, I would very much like to have so many writers that our total writers word count EXCEEDS that of the Cali event.

Details are as follows. Please post here if you can come.
NOTE: You only need to RSVP to one thread for this event.

The Evening of Scribbling Recklessly is on 11/22 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Nashville.

Where: 2300 Knights of Columbus Blvd. Nashville, TN

Where? - From I-40, exit Briley Parkway South (exit 215A), take the first LEFT onto Knights of Columbus Blvd.

When - 11/22 from 4-10 PM.

Important Notes:
$10 donation required for admission. This is in addition to any donation you've made. I will waive this for anyone that can prove they came from Australia.
Bring a side dish to share. Remember, we're pretty much all going to have computers handy, so stay away from really messy stuff. :)

We will be having a ton of giveaways.
You can get tickets for these givaways in a number of ways:
- Admission fee. Yes, you automatically get tickets for showing up.
- Bringing a dish to share like you're supposed to
- Wear a NaNo t-shirt. This can be from any year, and can be national or regional. I'll also accept Script Frenzy and Office of Letters and Light shirts for this.

In the course of our friendly, light-hearted, no-repercussions* challenge with Melbourne, I've noticed that we've been closing the gap over the past few days. It's also been made known that the Home Region may not be set on all participants, due to one reason or another. The way to fix that is to go to This Page - Make sure it says "Australia & New Zealand :: Sydney".

* Unless we beat them of course, then we will gloat profusely. There may be some other repercussions too, but hey, we're not going to let that happen, right??

Can You Please Help Me .... NaNo Project Help!!

I was hoping y'all could help me just a wee little bit.

As a side project during November (and actually, I'm more into this project than I am with my novel), I'm asking everybody to send me postcards from which I'll base a story.

All I'm asking is that the front of the postcard is actually a place of some sort (Parks, City Scapes, Monuments, Museums, etc.... whatever) and that on the back, you write a character name, the character's age, and a sentance or a few words about that character.

Stick it in the mail to me, and (starting November 1) when I get it, I will use the image on the front and the character on the back, to write a short story of at least 500 words. (Just think 100 postcards, and that's another 50,000 words right there.)

Shining Moments

I know everyone's busy writing (well, you better be!) but since I've had a few things I'd love to call shining moments already in this, my first nano, I thought I'd make a thread (we're such a quiet bunch here on the forums anyway). This is basically any 'Cool' thing that's happened as a result of you taking part in this year's NaNoWriMo.

Mine so far:

I've met other writers for the first time, and one pointed out they only know me as a writer. I thought that was such a cool revelation for me
My chatting about nano encouraged an old friend to get back into writing
I'm falling in love with my novel that wasn't even a concept this time last month
I've got an audience of three colleagues anxiously awaiting the next gripping print-out.
By the end of the week, this should be the longest thing I've ever written
I somehow turned an idea for a two paragraph transition into a 5000 word chunk
Sitting at my special thinking place, writing until the sun dipped below the horizon

I'm honestly enjoying this experience a whole lot, and since we're all in this together, thought it might be fun.

I know this doesn't really belong in this forum, but there isn't an obvious one in the non-regional ones. So I'll ask here first.

Do people share their works-in-progress with other non-writers? I've emailed my fiction to a friend who was looking for a few minutes escape from the world and I was planning on offering it tonight to some other friends. All people are not in NaNoWriMo, so I'm not hindering their word count.

But for the rest of us, couls you shout out hello and tell us about yourself?

I live in the blue Mountains - just over an hour out of Sydney.
I'm a mum of two (James, 13, Anna, 10)
I write chilrden's fiction through the year ... chapter books and picture books. Nothing published yet, still working on it. Two self published titles have sold a total of about 10 books (yay).

I'm going to be a rebel this year and write 5 X 10 000 word children books rather than one 50 000 novel which would probably be awful.

This my second year at nano. My first effort was a winner in word count, not so good in content. But I know a good fast first draft is important. I'm just not that good at writing anything for an auduence over the age of 12. I write for my own kids quuite a bit.
