The Official Sydney Nanowrimo 2007 "TGIO Party Thread!"

Hey all!

I hope your novels are coming to fruition for you in the last few days of November. To those that have already finished, well done, to those that aren’t sure if they'll make it, remember this "It's not about winning or losing, it's about taking on the challenge and giving it all you can. Some have heaps of time and no commitments, and others have many. Do what you can, when you can, or you'll never know "if" you could!"

Now, to talk of celebration!

First off, everyone is welcome, weather you finished or not. We are there to celebrate the end of November, and EVERYONES involvement. So do come, regardless of your final wordcount.

And so to location and details -

A big thanks to miss.y (otherwise known as Yasmin) who has been running the Write-ins at the Stanton Library in North Sydney, because she's also managed to snag for us a venue!

Place: Stanton Library Conference Room, Level 2, 234 Miller St, North Sydney.

Time: Sunday Dec 2nd 2007. We plan to start at 2pm, and finish up around 4:30pm, with 30 mins to clean up before we need to leave at 5pm.

Getting There:Paid parking is available in the Ridge St Carpark behind the library, or train to North Sydney Station and 10 min walk uphill or 202, 207, 228, 230 buses to the door.

Also, Info on accessibility: http://www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/www/html/2284-disabled-access.asp

Bring: This is a BYOE party, as I promised, so we NEED to bring all our own food and drink. Please bring a plate and something to drink. I would be great if you could bring more than you need for yourself, as we aim to share the food around. Drink sharing at your own discretion.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. Please let me know below if you are coming so we have some idea of numbers.

Any questions on the day, or if you get lost, phone me on 0433256430.

The Official Sydney Nanowrimo 2007 Write-in Thread

Hey all!

Well it looks like some of the blocks are falling into place for Write-ins for this year’s Nano.

Macquarie Uni Write-in

Dates: Every Wednesday of November
Place: Macquarie University Department of Biological Sciences, Building E8A Room 290.
Times: 6 to 9pm
Provided: Tea, coffee, a few munchies, a few laptops (for use during the write-in).
Bring: Preferred food and drink, for own consumption or to share.

Note: I'll edit this post at a later date to add a map of how to get there. There will be signs up from the under-bridge entry on the Eastern Rd side of Building E8A to the tea room (Room 290). Also, if you get lost, you can call me on 0433 256 430 to get some navigational help.

ALSO, missy.y will be posting here soon about write-ins she'll be running in North Sydney. And if that wasn't enough, we'll also be having write-in's run by Killraven in the City. Keep an eye out in this thread for those details soon.

Finally, if anyone wants to run a write-in closer to their own homes, please feel free; send me the details and if it sound feasible, we'll advertise it here!

November is for writers and writing. Let’s have some fun!

The Official Sydney Nanowrimo 2007 Kickoff Party Thread!

Ok now... you know Nano fever is getting serious when this thread shows up!

It's awwwnnn!

The Kickoff Party for Nano Sydney 2007 (thanks to Killraven for lining this up with Kino's)

Date: Sunday 28th October (as close to Nov as we can get on a weekend)
Time: 1pm to 4pm.
Place: Cafe just to the left of the main door into the Kinokuniya Bookstore (same place as last year), The Galleries Victoria, Level 2, 500 George Street (opposite QVB), Sydney NSW 2000.
Bring: Your good selves, anyone else that wants to know what Nano is about, your warm beverage drinking shoes, a little cash for said beverages, and a desire to mingle with others who are as crazy about writing as you!
How to get there: From the turnstiles to the north (QVB end) of Town Hall Station, head towards QVB but take the fork to the right (takes you under George St to Galleries Victoria). Walk along about 50m and you'll see an escalator on the right hand side of the arcade. Go up. Keep going up (2 more floors) and you'll be deposited right out the front of Kino's, facing the cafe through the glass wall. Too easy!

Questions/Problems/Etc: Nanomail me or on the day, call 0433 256 430 and I'll try to sort out your problem.

Researching First Fleet background.

Hi Sydneysiders,

As this is the first day sine the Forums reopened that they're even half decent, thought I'd take the opportunity of updating my earlier plea for background info on the First Fleet.

The research I've done so far has caused me to change things slightly. Instead of using information on Lady Juliana, I've switched to the Lady Penrhyn, that left Portsmouth in 1788 as part of the 11 ship First Fleet. Time is too short to research a fully accurate story, so I'm going to an invented character Elizabet 'Red Lizzie' McCabe. Irish born, but brought to London as a babe in arms and orphaned a few years later. She became a known pickpocket, until the night she picked the wrong victim. When she pulled a knife her fate was sealed and she was expecting to be hung. The deportation came as a shock, but it kept her alive.

At the moment I'm researching the prison system and the courts in 1780's London. I also need information on the conditions aboard the convict vessels, and in Australia when the First Fleet arrived and for the following few years. I'm working largely on the Internet at the moment and wondered whether any Sydneysiders could advise me of other places I could go for background information. Right now I think I'd struggle to reach 10k words let alone 50k, but the more background I have, the better tale I can tell.

As I sit here staring out of the window, Autumn is definitely on its way. Today might be a pleasant day, but the leaves are falling steadily. All it needs is one good frost, we'll be knee deep in fallen leaves and winter will be on its way.

Hope someone out there can give me some help.

Best wishes,
Chris

----------

If you're unfamiliar with Star Bar:
* it has good reasonably-priced food, and the kitchen is open 12pm-10pm
* there's lots of room
* it's quite central, and very close to Town Hall Station

Is anyone still here?

Hey, just wanting to check, as the last post in our section was more than three weeks ago, is anyone still here?

I haven't been checking in either as I have been moving house and such... I am now living in Grafton for a while...

What has everyone been up to?

How are you NaNos working out, and how was Christmas and New Year?

Anyway, hope all is well with everyone!
The HSC (mini rant and a quest to find others)

I know that there has to be a couple of people around here who were doing the HSC this year.

I just got my results back, and they're not pretty. Not that I expected them to be, of course. My story crashed the day before my legal exam, losing 10k, and that seems to be one of my better results, at 68%. My history results, however, leave much to be desired. 68% on one, 23% on another.

Anyone else up to sharing the woes, grievences and tissue box with me?
Sydney's brain explosions

Okay so the day before yesterday I wrote this magnificent chapter that I fell in love with. It was beautiful, it was heart-warming, and best of all it was so relevant to my novel. Then yesterday happened, and I somehow wrote 1200 words about pet rocks.

"There arose a great love for pet rocks, the strangest of brain fevers, wherein a man believes that his finest hope for companionship is a piece of stone with novelty eyes."

Oh god, how did it come to this? Please post your worst brain explosions from this year's NaNo, and tell me I'm not alone!

Now I know I haven't finshed yet, cos you'd know it if I had, but I know some of you have, so here is the thread to let everyone know when you finished, how you felt your November novelling went (how your characters behaived, how much editing you've got for the next 11 months etc) and what you plan to do now you've finished.*

So get to it, and tell us how it feels!

Ray

Uni/ School / work etc.

So, i noticed a few people are finishing up their HSC, finshing up their uni exams, or just generally working during NaNo. I figured we needed a place to vent about the frustrations our various learning and working institutions are causing us =p
So, if you have an exam in four hours but have been procrastinating by writing, or posting, or even if you really have been studying hard but are now below on your word limit- vent here :)

I'd like to say that
1. Work means i'm going to have difficulty getting to the write-ins, which sucks.
2. Uni kills me. Prac kills me more. This week is very, very bad, until Wednesday. After which point, i am FREE!
*grins*

Also- i'd like to know what uni's people go to. I promise not to stalk you.
Well, okay- i guarantee nothing, but still. Anyone from UNSW?

The Star Bar Write-Ins - a big thank-you, and one more time?

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who attended and showed interest in the three Star Bar Write-Ins. I enjoyed them tremendously - not only were they my most productive instances of NaNo-writing thus far (I churned out almost 4000 words per Write-In), but I met lots of fascinating people whom it was great fun to talk to and brainstorm with.

Secondly, I will be unavailable next weekend, the last for NaNo 2007, so I didn't organise another Star Bar Write-In for then. Despite my absence, however, would folks still be interested in attending a fourth and last Star Bar Write-In?

If so, let me know. I can either get in touch with Star Bar again to reserve the 'Mad Max' table, or I can pass on Star Bar's contact details if anyone else is interested in taking charge.

Starting with the title.

Are people for or against the term "Sydney-siders"? Would you prefer to be called something else? Like... Sydney-people? I seem to have a slight lack of imagination in that department.

That said, would you prefer to talk about something else? Like the weather. It was hot last week and now it is cold-ish. Don't you love spring?

Not that I'm really hanging out for it, but it would be super amazing. After all, if he's in Sydney on those days -- and we had contact details -- we could invite him down.

So what's everybody writing?

Well I've already changed my mind about five times but I think I've settled upon an Alternate History in which the Nazi Party don't take over Germany and Hitler is trying to make a living as a painter, however fate still surrounds him as he becomes friends with those who would have been in his 'inner circle' and when Hitler murders a Jewish art critic who destroyed his reputation he and his inner circle try to cover up the crime. This results is (an albeit smaller) Nuremberg style trial.
----------
Wild, dark times are rumbling toward us, and the prophet who wishes to write a new apocalypse will have to invent entirely new beasts, and beasts so terrible that the ancient animal symbols of Saint John will seem like cooing doves. - Heinrich Heine

Best and Worst spots in Sydney

Heya all you Sydney people. I am setting my novel in Sydney as Canberra isn’t big enough for it. I have been to Sydney a lot however I have never lived there and mostly stayed with friends near town or near uni’s.

Anyway I am looking for those special spots, the ones you love, and the thing that most annoys you about Sydney so although my novel is set in the future, there will be some carry through as it is in a derelict city not in a future city. My characters will be wondering through by foot, so they will have time to see a lot.

Thanks Eliz
