Hi guys just thought i would let you all know about a local publishing company opening it's doors here in perth... they will be working with local and international authors with a focus on the unpublished author (though def not limit to just unpublished authors)

It is early days but they are trying to set up a stock of new products to launch with. Open to submissions across genres.

Running Commentary. Hows it going?

heya guys :)

seems to be a few posts in a few different threads with the general "I've done XXX words, I'm struggling, I did this and this but discovered this really helped..." feel to them, so I thought it might be good to have a thread purely for updates on how you are going.

Personally, I'm four pages in and have done slightly upward of 10 000 words. Theres no way I'm going to be able to keep this up, so I'm milking it for all its worth whilst I'm still enthusiastic. I also have no idea how it ends, so I'm simultaneously peicing together a plot in my notes. I was just south of the river for the Air Race, and thus didnt get to leave my house all weekend :p

I also suggest that if you're struggling, jump ahead to a sequence you've been looking forward to writing, and write the bridging bit later. Found that really helped me.

Ok well i just looked at the stats and Perth has donated $175... and since i donated $100 that leaves $75 between the other 200 odd people in our region.

I know some people cant afford to donate and that is more than cool but i also know some people can. I was hesitant in donating because hey the bulk of the money goes to helping american causes... however i also use this site every day and the money also goes towards that... and more importantly making the event of Nanowrimo possible...

and just so you know the bundle of goodies they send you is pretty damn cool :D

A challenge to Perthians (NOT Dekalb) to write 10k this weekend, in the hopes that we can kick butt on this word count war.

official rules: I'm including friday, because . . . I want to. Plus, it will be easier for people to split the 10k up.

10k is just a guideline. If people want to go for more, feel free. I am planning to make at least 20k because I am so far behind the rest of you are just dots on the horizon.

Other rules will be added when I'm reminded of them.

NaNoWriMo retreat

For the third year in a row, there will be a weekend retreat to Fairbridge, from 2pm onwards, Friday 23rd November, to noon on Sunday 25th November. The exact cost will depend on how many people attend, but I'm anticipating it being between $70 and $100, including catering. The cottage sleeps 15, and has 5 bedrooms.

Yes, it is the weekend of the election, and the plan is to travel to Pinjarrra (10 minutes away) and place absentee votes on the Saturday morning.

The retreat is a chance to do nothing except write, and be surrounded by people who are writing too. You'll need to bring your laptop or PC, bedding, towels, clothing and snack food. Carpooling is available, so let me know if you need transport arranged. I'm pretty good at cooking around food allergies and preferences too.

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but we are getting seriously whipped by Dekalb. Now, some of us have put in outstanding efforts to reach and even exceed the 50K mark, and they should be applauded. The rest of us (present company included, of course)... well, we need to get our rear ends into gear.

I mean, really. Do we want to let ourselves get beaten AGAIN, by a city whose only claim to fame is being the home of barbed wire? No. No, we don't.

We are the City of Lights. Granted, in a time of global warming where we happen to be the number one polluters per capita on the planet, this may not be something we can be so proud of... but for the month of November, Perthians, don't hide that light under a bushel! Burn the midnight oil! And follow whatever other environmentally unfriendly cliches you can, for we can do it! We can win! GO PERTH!!!

Is that inspirational, or what? Never mind, don't answer that, just get back to your novels.

The turn out for the write ins has been so low I'm cancelling the next one (scheduled for Sunday 18th November).

If people really want a write in on Saturday 24th November, then some firm RSVPs here might persuade Anita (who has been sharing cat-herding ML duties with me) to go ahead and arrange the final write in. I'll be at the retreat that weekend, so won't be handling the final write in.

I am very glad I exported what I had written from yWriter to Word for friends to read as this morning I had to restore my system to a week ago and everything was gone. IncludingyWriter! Yes, Simon, I looked everywhere! :(

I now own a 250g external hard drive as a backup! With everything on it - including yWriter stuff - included! grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Of course, this is the only glitch I will have. :-|

Hi NaNoers

The loose plan had been to follow the same pattern as previous years, and have a middle of the night write in on the 31st of October, to launch NaNoWriMo, but I've had to discard that idea because of other commitments.

So, here's the info for the weekend write ins for the month.

Saturday, November 3rd. 2pm, at Fantastic Planet Bookshop, Shop 8, Shafto Lane, Perth. Shafto Lane runs between Hay and Murray Sts, opposite Cloisters Square. The shop phone number is 9481 8393, if you're having trouble finding the venue.

Saturday November 10th, 2pm. Same venue.

Sunday November 18th, 2pm. Same venue.

Saturday November 24th. 2pm. Same venue.

Bring a laptop, or pen and paper, and procrastinate or word duel with your fellow Nanoers.

Planning an ending. Yes, no?

Some of us are really prepared for Nano, some of us just sit and start typing on the 1st. I'm somewhere in the middle, but...

It's always hard for me, ending stories. I never have a planned ending before I start writing. I just keep going, maybe until character developments work out or I HIT 45,000 WORDS. And frankly, the half-cooked endings I come up with are just...really, really bad.

I'm beginning to think there might be something to that theory- the one that says, plan the beginning, plan the end, let the middle be filled as you go.

In any case, I think I'm going to try it: plan an ending before I start writing. It's radical. It's scary. I CAN NOT think of anything!!

But pain is part of the fun. Yes?
