[STICKY] Regional Forums are All Ages

Just a heads up to everyone, in case you didn't know. In previous years, nano had special forums designated All Ages for younger nano participants. For the last three years, the All Ages designation expanded to include the regional forums, such as this one.

As an All Ages forum, the content that appears here has to be appropriate for people of all ages and sensitivities. This means:

- no profanity or sexual content of any kind
- no abusive or threatening language directed at other users or groups
- no blatant sales or promotional posts in this regional forum. As a clarification, if you have a non-nano related event or get-together happening during November that you want to let your fellow nanos know about, you can post that in the 'SoBaNaNo Off-Topic Board' thread in this regional forum. If you post about such an event as a new thread, don't be surprised if we move it to the off-topic thread.
- no pornographic or otherwise graphic material
- Please refrain from political posts. It's important to remember that we have people of various political affiliations present in the forums. Don't assume everyone agrees with you, or make politically-themed attacks. We want the forums to be about noveling, not who is doing (or not doing) what in the political arena.

The South Bay nanos are a great group of people, and I'm confident we won't have any problems. But I wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of the rules for posting to this forum.

If you have any questions or concerns, please PM me or marcopolo.
[STICKY] Write-in schedule for November

It thrills me to announce the amazingly packed schedule of write-ins for the South Bay, which includes events every day of the week in 8 different cities throughout the region. Wow! Below is the complete list of write-ins, and you can also view it all in its calendrical glory on the South Bay calendar.

Most write-ins are in public places (generally cafes), and you can just show up at the appointed time with your laptop or notepad and look for the group with NaNo signs or t-shirts.
[STICKY] Make the South Bay your home!

If you're reading this, it's probably because you have some dedication to the South Bay region. But have you declared your loyalty to the world by setting the South Bay as your home region? You'll know that the South Bay is your home region if you see it listed on the Author Info page of your profile. If it's not there, go to My Regions to set it. Full instructions here.

Please check and make sure that the South Bay is your home region so that the words you write will help our region climb the word count scoreboard and so that your donations will boost our ranking in the Donation Derby.

If you have some legitimate excuse for making a different region your home, I guess we'll allow that, but please, please, don't leave yourself homeless and let your words and donations go uncredited to any region!

Hey guys!

We're second place for donations to nanowrimo again! which is good, but not awesome--Let's try to kick it up a bit! If everyone donates just 10 bucks (and you get the spiffy halo next to your name), we can top Seattle!

*** Please click here and donate: https://store.lettersandlight.org/donations ***

Here's some info on how OLL spends your money and inspires lots of kids and adults into writing--just think about the great impact they have on your own lives!! http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/wheredonationsgo

And if you really can't spare a couple of bucks, you can still help OLL and nanowrimo by using goodsearch or ebay: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/donatingwhenbroke

We can totally beat Seattle! Let's do it!
Back Up Your Novel - Early And Often!

Just an early reminder:

Back up your novel. Back it up early. Back it up often. In fact, stop reading, back it up RIGHT NOW, then return to this posting (unless it's October, in which case you haven't started your novel yet). This isn't like voting - the more times you back up, the better. You want to stack that ballot box with a resounding win for your COMPLETE novel, not just a partial recovery you managed to dig up after spending several hundred dollars at a data recovery center.

But how, you ask, can I back up my novel without purchasing expensive automated back up software and dozens of redundant external hard drives to write those backups to?

I'm glad you asked. You don't need to spend top dollar to protect your creative efforts. There are plenty of cheap, if not free, ways to do it!

Email your novel to yourself. Save a copy to a floppy disk (by the way, if you still have a floppy disk drive, you SO need to upgrade your computer!!), a USB memory stick, a burnable CD/DVD. Hell, plug your digital camera into your computer and save a copy there, if necessary. Just save an extra copy somewhere OTHER than the computer/PDA/AlphaSmart/whatever you're writing it on. Anywhere. And do it every time you sit down to write.

Here's what I do. Every day, I make a copy of my novel-in-progress, with the date as part of the name. I then work on the new document. This means if my computer crashes or somehow corrupts the file I'm currently working on, I still have the previous copy safely tucked away. And every day, when I'm done writing, I email myself the latest copy of that novel.

Those of you using a typewriter (old school!) or writing by hand (even older school!) may think you don't need to make backups, but consider this: paper can burn, get eaten by a pet, be used as toilet paper in a moment of desperation, get caught up in a gust of wind, or fall into the wrong hands. So you might want to use that copy machine at work to make a backup of your novel. Or have a friend with a photographic memory read your dailies. I'm just saying.
PLOT NINJAS - Week 3+4

I'm running low on plot ninjas that we can set loose on our novels, so please send more! Contribute ideas for crazy characters, silly settings, preposterous plot twists, dangerous diversions, extreme episodes, and wacky words that can be thrown into a NaNo novel when authors run short on ideas.

Permanent Write-In Interest?

I NaNo'd for five years in a region where write-ins didn't exist, which was very sad. Coming here, I've discovered the awesomeness that is write-ins. Both because I get to meet fellow writers and because I find it a whole lot easier to write at a cafe, surrounding by crazies like me, than on my own at home.

So I'm wondering if some SoBaNaNo folks would be interested in setting up a more permanent schedule of write-ins, maybe a couple a week. Not necessarily for finishing NaNo novels, but just to get some writing, any writing done on a regular basis. (I think I remember seeing that B&N and Barefoot write-ins happen year-round, but I work until 5 on weekdays so I can't make either of those.)

Would there be any interest in continuing to meet a few days a week? I'm a fan of OVC on Sundays and Red Rock on Tuesdays, and I really liked the Sunnyvale Art Gallery this morning, but really, anything at all would be awesome!
What is your 50,000th word? (Or your 25,000th?)

It's getting to the time when green bars are beginning to appear alongside the names of some SoBaNaNos, so it's become time to once again ask the question, "What is your 50,000th word?"

To start things off, mine was "rotund", in the passage:

"Hmm, age seems right. Same shoes. Same haircut, same rotund middle... I think you're right. You're a genius!"

(My 25,000th word was "velvet" -- since Simon decided not to use it, I figured it was too good to let go.)

Write on, everyone!

Why we kill Cliff Brooks, and how did you do it this year?

If this is your first year, or if you weren't totally forum-obsessed in previous years, you may be wondering about this requirement you've heard about, which says that we must all "kill Cliff Brooks" in some way in our novels. The first post in this thread (this one) should help you understand the history of this edict. The rest of the thread is meant as a place where you can post a description of how you off Cliff in this year's novel. We're hoping to have a read-a-thon at the TGIO party this year consisting solely of passages in which Cliff is killed off, with the man himself in attendance for maximal enjoyment, so keep this in mind as you're writing those gruesome scenes.

Cliff Brooks is a real live guy, a really great guy who writes horror stories; he lived in the South Bay seven years ago and came to a number of write-ins. At one weekly write-in, my younger son Philip, 13 at the time and writing his own mini-novel, peered over Cliff's shoulder, read the scene he'd just written, and burst out laughing. Cliff scowled at him. "That's horror, that's not supposed to be funny!" But Philip insisted it was, in fact, hilarious. In a mock huff, Cliff wrote a character named Philip into the scene and killed him off quite grotesquely. The next week, Philip was eager to get to the write-in to show Cliff the scene he'd written, in which President of the United States Clifford Brooks morphed into a monster with multiple appendages and two heads, and then exploded. As a horror writer, Cliff loved it. Several of us decided that we, too, would kill a character named Cliff Brooks in our own novels, and from there the things just grew legs, as they say.

If you'd like to hear Cliff himself explaining this phenomenon, he called in to an interview with Chris Baty on NPR's Talk of the Nation with Neal Conan on Nov. 23, 2004.
You can find the intro article here: The Simple Art of Writing Novels
The interview itself is here: http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist...
Cliff calls in at the 8:53 mark, and speaks with Neal until the 12:05 mark. (One error: Cliff says Philip was 16 at the time, he was not, he was only 13.)

Now. How did YOU kill Cliff Brooks this year, hmmm? I'll reveal my method once I've actually written the scene.

Go forth and murder! : )

--moot/Diane.
Halfway Party - Saturday, November 21

On Saturday, November 21, take a break from nonstop noveling and hang out with your fellow South Bay NaNos at the Halfway Party! (Okay, November 21 is more than halfway through the month, but "Two-Thirds Party" doesn't roll off the tongue.) Join us at the party to chat, commiserate, snack, relax, and even write if you want to.

During the party, we're going to hold a raffle for fabulous NaNo merchandise and possibly other fun prizes. Tickets will be $1 each, and all the money raised will be donated to the Office of Letters and Light (the nonprofit that runs NaNoWriMo) on behalf of the South Bay. Bring cash (small bills appreciated) if you want to buy raffle tickets. The raffle will probably take place around 5:30. I already have some prizes but am still looking for more, so if you have unused, unwanted NaNo merch from any year or something else to donate that would make a great raffle prize, please contact me.

Steph (skneal), who hosted the Halloween Party/Write-in, is such an awesome SoBaNaNo that she has also offered her house for the Halfway Party. She and her equally generous husband live in South San Jose. If you don't have the address from attending the Halloween Party, you need to SEND ME NANOMAIL requesting the address.

Please bring a potluck contribution. Any type of food or beverage is fine -- it doesn't have to be homemade or fancy! You are welcome to bring along a non-noveling supporter. There will be writing space for those who wish to write during the event, but giving yourself a day off to socialize is cool, too.

Halfway Party
Saturday, November 21
3:00-7:00pm
Steph's house in South San Jose -- RSVP for address
bring: potluck contribution, optional cash for raffle tickets, optional noveling implements

Feel free to use this thread to talk about what food you're planning to bring or to arrange carpools from your area.
Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

On Sunday, November 22, the staff of the Office of Letters and Light (the nonprofit that runs NaNoWriMo) is throwing a gala fundraising event in San Francisco. The Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon will be six hours of writing, eating, drinking, writing, eating candy, and listening to inspiring words from NaNo founder Chris Baty. And writing. Exciting gifts and raffle prizes, too!

Last year, NaNo participants flew in from across the US and Canada, and even from as far away as Australia, to take part in the Write-a-thon. Here in the South Bay, we're lucky to be located in convenient carpooling distance to the event, so consider raising money to attend.

In order to reserve a seat at the Write-a-thon, you'll need to raise or donate $200, all of which goes to benefit OLL's awesome programs. Using the GiftTool fundraising site, you can set up a personal sponsorship page to direct your family and friends to. Now it's time to hit up everyone who's ever asked you to sponsor them in a walk-a-thon! You can donate some or all of the money yourself instead of fundraising, but note that contributions made through the Donation Station don't count toward the NoWD $200.

Write-a-thon attendees who raise $300 can bring a guest along. This means if two NaNo participants choose to team up and raise money together, they only need to collect $150 each.

All the event details are here:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/writeathon

Feel free to post in this thread if you're raising money for the Write-a-thon, have questions, or want to find a fundraising buddy. As the date gets nearer, we can coordinate carpooling from the South Bay.

New parent/kiddie friendly write-in?

Maybe it's just the sleep deprivation, but it seems like there are more than a couple of brand new parents in the mix this year (including myself). It occurs to me that there might be interest in a write-in that caters to new parents (and maybe even not-so-new parents); that is, baby and young child friendly as well as writer friendly. Is there interest? If so, does anyone have any ideas of a kid-friendly place to meet that also has plenty of electrical outlets and access to coffee? I'm such a new dad myself, I haven't discovered such a place yet. The best I've managed so far is the mall food court, which is so loud no one cares if your babies are crying.

If this sounds like a good idea to you, chime in here!

Word count aside, how's your novel going?

We're coming up on the end of Week 3, so now's a good time to check in with how your novel is doing. Is it going well? Are you hopelessly lost? Love it or hate it? Somewhere in-between?

My novel is a mystery, and round about 32k, I was ready to reveal the solution. Oops. 18k to go after that. Hmm. Problematic. Anyone else finding their book is almost done well before 50k?

(My solution - the mystery is theater thrown by alien pod people who plan to assume the MCs' identities and take over the world - I can stretch that out 18k easy.)
Humor and Creativity in the workplace

My office is full of very intelligent people with a sense of humor, who find the strangest ways to release their creativity. For example, we always keep a grocery list on the office refrigerator, so people can jot down when we need supplies. Last Christmas, in between notes for 'soy milk' and 'english breakfast tea', someone added "a pony!" This was followed with other entries over the course of the week, like "my two front teeth", "world peace", etc. (I wish I had kept the list!) I look forward to what this holiday season will bring.

Over the summer, we hired a new sales guy. Soon after his welcome luncheon, a new list appeared on the refrigerator: a blank sheet of paper with the title "REASONS WHY [X] SPENT TWO NIGHTS IN A MEXICAN PRISON" (where X is the guy's name which I have redacted. It didn't take long for my coworkers to fill up that list, and it stayed up on display for at least a month. This one I did save, and I pass it along both as entertainment and as possible inspiration.

REASONS WHY [your character] SPENT TWO NIGHTS IN A MEXICAN PRISON:

* Corona, tequilla and Rosita...

* To bail out his wife.

* Thought that would be the best place to sample authentic Mexican cuisine.

* Unwittingly smuggled two Mexican midgets while purchasing oversized sombreros.

* He was unwilling to pay the hotel security guy $40 to let him bring his "new friend" back to the hotel room.

* Three words: Ask The Donkey!

* Accused of being the legendary Chupacabra... twice! (Lesson learned: remove dead goats from car trunk)

* Learned his Spanish from "Cheech and Chong".

* Researching the plight of Mexican prisoners for a book.

* Trying to pay for Cuban cigars with Canadian money in Mexico.

* "What do you mean, 'this isn't the nudist beach'?"

* Because, like potato chips, one just wasn't enough.

Feel free to hit 'reply' and add your own!

----------

Anybody get the giant (broken) bar of power at Red Rock on 11/17?

I left the giant bar of power (which has, alas, died) at Red Rock this evening! Argh! It's broken, but I was hoping to return it to Fry's and get a new one.

Did anybody snag it?
What should my 25,000th word be?

I happened to type a period at the end of my sentence, and my word count is
exactly 24,999.

I'm going to stop writing for the evening.

If anyone is reading this before I start again in the morning, what should I put
down as my 25,000th word?

Give me something interesting, but not sabotaging, and I'll work it in.

In other words, something like Pandemonium would work, but Ninja or
Obama will totally fail.

It is the beginning of a paragraph. What is the best work you have used to begin
a paragraph?

----------

What's Your First Sentence?

Nano 2009! What's your first sentence?

My Novel's Title is Skating On This Ice

A young girl, perhaps seven or eight years old, stared at me in the reflection of the mirror - wide, terror-filled eyes and crouched down next to the toilet in the handicapped stall in the rest room of my new office space in the Administration building of the former mental hospital.
