The Final Push in Boulder: IHOP (with Harpo's auxiliary football unit)

It's traditional to get together for one last, long, until-midnight write-in on November 30 to cheer each other over the finish line. I propose we do this at IHOP (1675 28th Street), since it's open 24-hours and has hosted this madness before. (I still remember, and may still have pictures, of SlyCrow bringing the Big Blue Pencil to the IHOP and posing as the NaNoWriMo Marathon Man. The restaurant staff were bemused, but amused.)

Suggested starting time: 6:00 PM, with option to start earlier if anyone wants to show up. First one there, put something identifyingly NaNoWriMo on the table, like one of the flyers or table tents you can download and print out.

It will be very useful to use this thread to find out who in fact plans on being the first one at IHOP.

Also, mostly because I am a very badly behaved ML who cannot bring herself to sacrifice watching her team play on Monday Night Football, I will be hosting a Final Push Auxiliary for Football Fans And Wrimos-Who-Drink just around the corner at Harpo's (29th and Arapahoe). The game starts at 6:30 and generally ends by 9:30 or 10, by which time any of us football-fan and/or drinking wrimos will make our way over to IHOP to join the main Wrimo contingent.

In case IHOP's wi-fi fails us at the last minute (it did, one memorable year), Harpo's is a useful back-up. It should be open past midnight, being a bar-type of place, but I've never seen them card at the door, so it should remain all-ages. (I will make inquiries and report back to confirm or deny their late-night all-ages status.) I've only seen its wi-fi fail once, and that was in a snowstorm. I can generally find a place to plug my powerstrip in there, too. Another option is the Baker Street Pub just a titch north of the 28th and Canyon. Again, reliable wi-fi and plentiful plugs at the 6-top booths.

This thread will make a useful place for reporting on the wi-fi situation on the evening of the 30th. Keep an eye on it in case of unexpected situations.

All right! Let's make some plans.
Tuesday Lunchtime Write-ins at the Tea Box

...are on the schedule.

Nevertheless, the dreaded Renovations have hit the Tea Box, and today it is closed. When Tea Box opens up again, Tuesday Lunchtime Write-ins will resume there. Until then, our back up is THE CUP, on the very same block of Pearl but about five doors to the east.
Last-minute Whimsical Write-in/Meet-up thread (Boulder Edition)

If you're going to be out-and-about in a NaNoWriMo sort of way, and you'd like to invite your fellow area Wrimos to drop in, post on this thread!

For maximum happiness, an invitation should include location and timeframe. Timeframes can be formal ("from noon until three") or exceedingly casual ("from now until I'm ready to go home.") This isn't a thread for meticulous planning. It's a thread for finding yourself at Brewing Market/Vics/IHOP/etc. with time on your hands and looking for that energy boost you get from sharing some time with people who share your creative goal.

Also, specify if the space/time you're inviting Wrimos to share is a "Ssh! trying to write, here!" sort of occasion, or more of a "Woo, time to blow off some steam!" sort of occasion. Or if it's somewhere in between, like "I'll be over here writing but don't let that keep you from saying hi!"

It's also useful to mention how Wrimos dropping in on you will recognize you amongst all the other coffee-shop-with-laptop patrons. "I have a NaNoWriMo table tent on fluorescent yellow cardstock" or "My Dell Inspiron laptop has multiple NaNoWriMo stickers" is awesome. Descriptions of distinctive clothing items work too, as do descriptions of where in that public place you'll be ("At Conors, at that rectangular table allllll the way in the back by the dart board, 'cause that's where the electrical outlet is").

I'll get it started with this not-at-all hypothetical example:

I will be at the Teabox (downtown Boulder, 15th and Pearl)
today, Tuesday, October 27th,
from noon until probably 3ish.

I'm a short gal with my hair in a bun and wearing a black T-shirt with a red Halloweenish-looking devil dude on it. My 15.4" Dell Inspiron laptop is full of NaNoWriMo stickers.

I'll be working on various writing projects (including brainstorming for Nano!) in a casual sort of way. I'd love to meet and chat with other Wrimos (who are, perhaps, also brainstorming against November 1...)

Tuesdays at the Teabox are going to be a regular weekly feature that I'll put on the calendar, but since the calendar is still not up ye (I'm working on it!), here ya go!
Twitter-enabled Word Sprints!

Chris Baty did a few International Word Sprints via Twitter, using the http://www.twitter.com/NaNoWriMo feed. That seemed to go over well. So now there is an official Twitter Word Sprints account: http://twitter.com/NaNoWordSprints

They just wrapped up for the night, but there may well be more in the days to come!

Longmont Writer in Residence

I will be hanging out at Vic's Espresso as Writer in Residence again this year. (Well, same location, different shop. Use to be Deja Brew sniff!) PLEASE NOTE: I have changed my hours slightly.

Hours for my residency are:

Mondays 4pm to 6pm
Wednesdays from 10am to 12 noon
Sundays 12:00 to 2:00

This will be posted on the calendar as soon as I get myself over there to the widget and make it happen.

The Writer in Residence gig is just to let WriMos in the area come and write or talk about your novels, get advice, or just blow off steam. Whatever makes sense. If we get a diverse crowd, we can break into two tables: one for talkin' and one for writin'.

We can even use the Writer in Residence hours for write-ins. I've already approached the staff about it, and they seem cool. I have yet to talk with the owner, Rob, but I do not foresee any problems with meeting there at any time.
Saturday Afternoons @ Healing Tea (Boulder-Area Write-Ins)

Since it seemed to work out so well last week for the meet-n-greet...

I'll be at Healing Tea (33rd & Arapahoe) by noon today, November 7, drinking matcha and working on my novel. I may also be helping out in a blockade in Puzzle Pirates; it depends on how well I can multitask. And/or resist temptation...My characters were chattering away at me last night as I tried to get to sleep (too much late night coffee) and maybe I can put some of what they told me to work.

Look for the Nano-stickers on the Dell Laptop and the Nano-postcard acting as a table tent!

For free wi-fi, ask the cashier to lend you the password-info card that's standing by the register.
Word Count Competition Challenge from Colorado Springs

Sara (Narniaprincess), ML for Colorado Springs has challenged the Colorado: Boulder Region to a word count competition.

In her words:

Narniaprincess wrote:
I'm one of the ML's down here, and for the last few years, our wrimos have always rallied to try to beat other Colorado cities for word count. Now, Denver, being huge, is sorta out of our league, but you guys are always neck and neck with us. So somehow, we got it in our heads that we were in competition with you...

and then we all realized that you probably had no idea that we were trying to beat you, and maybe it would be more fun if you did.

The Word Count for Colorado Springs Region is 2,020,103 words (9,854 per Wrimo).

Our word count for Boulder Region is currently (as of 1:00pm MDT) 1,995,592 words (9,594 per Wrimo) That is AWESOME! But we are behind Colorado Springs by just a smidge. That means we have room for improvement, but just a little because we are so awesome.

So, what do you say? Let's show 'em we can see their word count and raise 'em! Let's inflate those counts. Let's get the ol' bike tire pump out, blow off the cobwebs, and sqeeze more air into the word tube, and then let the words flow out of that tube like it was a cake decorator thingy! yeah! I got words, sister!

The compeition is based on the word count on the Web site, so your words won't "count" for the competition (although they very much count toward your NaNo success!) unless you keep your word count up to date on the Web site. So, if you have not updated your word count in a couple of days, PLEASE DO SO TODAY, so we can have an accurate word count for our friendly little compeition. (See the how to about updating your word count here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/faq#node-1044627).

I'll keep the region abreast of the competition here, in this thread. Check back if you need an extra push to write some more words and decorate more of that cake, and then decorate another, and another and.... Ok, not a great analogy, but I am trying!

We are meeting for a write in this Thursday, November 12 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at Cafe Luna in Longmont. Cafe Luna is at 800 Coffman St, at the northeast corner of Coffman and 8th Avenue, just east of Roosevelt Park.

Some Fun Stats for Colorado!

Ft. Co has 179 writers, 2,791375 words with an average of 15,594 per writer,
40K!

A bunch of you have crossed this line a while ago, and are way ahead. I invite you to start your own High Number Count thread. But, for me, I just happily crossed the 40K line and my plot is actually starting to bend as Chris Baty suggests toward the end of my story. Starting. It must be made from some hard plastic material (hope it is recyclable!) because it resists bending, with every atom of it's corpus.

Yay, 40K! Congrats to all who have made it here and beyond!
Friday Evenings @ Brewing Market, Baseline (Boulder-Area Write-Ins)

It's on the calendar from 6:30 until 10:00 PM (closing time). You can of course get there earlier or later as you choose. I'll try to be there right at 6:30 with my NaNoWriMo Postcard Onna Cardboard Tube.

Brewing Market can be notoriously crowded with C U students studying for mid-terms and so forth. That factor tends to lighten up a bit on weekends, though, so we should be OK. Let's give it a shot and find out.

Also, for those who get a bit hungry mid-way through a writing session, and want something a bit more substantial than a Breggo, the Baseline Brewing Market is next door to BeauJo's Pizza, which is yummy and open until 9:30 PM tonight.

Technical note: Both Brewing Market and BeauJo's have wi-fi, so it's possible you'll find yourself within range of both signals. If your laptop starts randomly hopping between the two, put the network of the place you're not at on "Manual" or deselect "Automatically Connect" in its wireless network properties.

Also, if you'd prefer a rowdier atmosphere or are looking for someplace to be after the Baseline options have closed, Keith has said he'll be at Laughing Goat tonight, Friday Nov. 6, looking to drink heartily and talk plot in addition to writing a good thousand words. So there are options tonight!

Thursdays Evenings @ Flatiron Coffee (Boulder-area Write-in)

Lady Doom has alerted us to the existence of Flatirons Coffee via the "Write-In Locations" thread. It used to be the Peaberry's at 28th and Arapahoe. It has tasty coffee and has demonstrated its appropriateness for Getting Novel Done.

It's on the calendar as 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Feel free to get there earlier, but they won't let you stay later 'cause 9 is closing time.

Lady Doom, as our gracious write-in host, would you like me to bring you a table tent or similar identifying sign for helping Wrimos figure out which hard-at-work faction is us? I can print something right up.
Teenagers Unite!

Hey guys.
So I was thinking.
I've never been to a write in or anything before. And I think thats because I always feel like I am way too young and it would be weird. So perhaps we could organize a teenaged/high-school write in at some point? It'd be cool 8)
I know some of the more nanowrimo supporting schools have their own write ins and stuff (I know fairview did when I was there as a freshman) but mine doesn't, so I never get to meet any people through nano and it makes me a sad panda.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this work? I think the most concentrated area of teenaged nanoers is in boulder, so perhaps somewhere there?
CU WriMos: on-campus write ins?

As a student, it's a bit hard to meet during the weekday write-ins, because I spend most of my day on campus. I suspect that this may be the case for other students as well. Does anyone want to have a few CU weekday write-ins? I'm typically at the Laughing Goat behind Norlin from 3:30 to 4:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and I'm usually free before noon and after five. If anyone has any ideas, places, meeting times, etc, I'd love to get some of us CU wrimos together sometime.
Second Life Resources: The NaNoShrine & NaNoCafe

For those of y'all with accounts in Second Life (or who are considering creating a free account, creating an avatar, and exploring a virtual world!), here's a resource you'll want to make note of:

NaNoShrine and NaNoCafe - Inworl, sLiterary (113, 170, 26)
SLurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/sLiterary/113/170/26
Associated Groups: "NaNoWriMo SL", "SL Wrimos"

(To join a group: Use SL's "search" interface, choose the "groups" tab, and enter the name of the group you want. Pull up the group's info/profile via the button in the search results. Use the "Join Group" button on the group info main page.)

When you teleport to the NaNoShrine and NaNoCafe location, you're standing in an outdoor lounge area made to look like a giant book laying open upon a ground made of giant crumpled up sheets of paper. You can lounge in the armchairs there and just take a break...

...or you can turn around and enter the NaNoCafe. This is a little diner, sort of Waffle House style, with booths and a counter. Laptops are available to type at--just right-click on one of them and choose "Type!" from the radial menu. Your avatar will sit down in front of that computer and start typing at it.

(If you want an animated laptop of your own, to "wear" such that you can be typing on a laptop anywhere in SL, talk to group member Ina Infinity. Or talk to me in-world - she gave me one, and I can give you a copy.

Outside is a red block with two "timers" attached to it. (Actually, these are counters. About that, more in a moment.) This is the interface for the NaNoWriMo SL Word Count Database! Click it, then simply speak your current word count into Local Chat within the next 60 seconds. This will do several things:

* It will add your word count to the overall progress of the group of people using it, allowing the two "clocks" to be updated--one shows average words per author, and the other shows the total words of the whole group (in 100,000s).

* It will automatically TWEET your word count update! Check it out: http://twitter.com/vwnanowrimo

* It will update your word count personally, so that if you are wearing the "SL Participant Word Count on Head - 2009" object, it will show anyone looking at your avatar how awesome you are in terms of words!

(Where do you get this magic Word-Count-On-My-Head object? Just click the small yellow box with the NaNoWriMo Shield Logo that's sitting in between the two big counters, and accept the notecard it gives you. There are links in that notecard to get you landmarks and the word count object.)

Update often! Apparently, there will be daily prizes. And if you cross that 50,000-word finish line, your avatar name will be added to the NaNoShrine, which stands behind the lounge area and joyfully proclaims the names of the 2008 and 2007 winners.

Also, if you join one or both of the groups listed above, you'll get notified of any events--parties, write-ins, you name it. And the "Word of the Day" will be delivered to you via group notification, just in case you'd like the extra challenge of working that word into your day's writing. (Day 1's word was "predilection." Day 2: "disassociate." I have not seen a Day 3 word come through yet.)

Happy exploring, and see you in SL!
Back Up Your Work

Sadly, advice I should have followed last night. I've been backing up faithfully, but I was tired last night and shut down my computer without thinking...

You guessed it. I couldn't start my computer today. Well, it will start, it just won't boot. Blue screen of death.

I'm using my husband's computer right now, which means I'll have something to write on intermittently. I don't know if I can make it to any write-ins until I get mine fixed. ;( Then again, I could try writing long hand. ;) We'll see.

So, take a page from my not-yet-50K book and back up your work.

Final Push Party, Monday, November 30th, Longmont

I know it is only the beginning of the third week of NaNoWriMo, and you may still see an ocean of time ahead of you to finish your 50K, which is great. But why not invest in some insurance that you might like a little help with that last mile of our writing marathon and plan to join me for The Final Push Party for Longmont?

The Final Push Party for Longmont is set for 6:30pm to Midnight on Monday, November 30th, at my (Ellen's/Alienor's) House in southwest Longmont.

My house is just around the corner from Vic's so I will start at Vic's with my usual Writer-in-Residence horus of 4:00pm to 6:00pm, then we will all go en masse to my house, OR you can just meet us at my house at 6:30pm.

Please RSVP to this thread if you plan to be there and let me know whether you are planning to be at Vic's beforehand. IF you are not going to be at Vic's beforehand, I'll NaNoMail you the exact address and directions to my house. If you are going to be at Vic's, I'll just tell you then, or you can follow me on my bike. ;--}

I have two big tables, a desk, and two comfy futon chairs, and a comfy loveseat that my husand made. You can also sprawl on the floor by the fire. Of course, the comfy chairs can be pulled up close to the fire as well. There will be munchies and beverages available, but please bring a munchie or a beverage to share, if you like.
PC repair

Can someone suggest a good place to get my PC repaired? I'm new to Boulder. I'd prefer someplace in town rather than Broomfield or Longmont. No offense to either city! It's just I'm still learning my way around.

Thanks so much!
"Halfway Done" Spaghetti Party @ Cafe D'Amore

Let's get together, pat each other on the back, gripe and grouse and brag and boast--and eat a lot of spaghetti.

Friday, November 13, 2009
from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
at Cafe D'Amore @ 2850 Iris Ave, Ste. H, in Boulder
(It's across from the DMV in the strip mall near where an Albertsons turned into a 24 Hour Fitness.)

Cafe D' Amore serves All You Can Eat Spaghetti on Friday afternoons/evenings between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM (we'll be gathering around 6:00 PM). Comes with a drink and "all the cheesy bread you want" for $5.95 a person.

If you plan to be there, pretty please say Hi right here in this thread so I can call ahead and give the restaurant a rough idea of how much spaghetti will be consumed.

ALSO, if you are coming from Longmont, Alienor is organizing a carpool or series of carpools. Check in with the carpool thread at http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3427915 (but please ALSO leave a note here, since I'll be counting responses in THIS thread for RSVP purposes).

Headcount as of Thursday, November 12th, 8:00 PM:
Myself, John, our friend Jacque (cavyherd), mmmaybe our friend Avedan
lyla.north
Alienor
jmosnik
Aenai and Cayley
Kmac with sister
angelwrites with husband and toddler
orange_author13
Lady Doom & husband

= 17ish Called in! He's looking forward to seeing us!

I'll keep this updated through Thursday evening. And if it gets to be Thursday and you have not yet RSVP'd, don't let that stop you from joining us! We're just trying to give the restaurant some idea of how busy *they* are going to be. I mean, obviously we can't account for non-Nano customers coming in on a Friday night, so they're gonna expect to see somewhat more people than show up in this list.

We appear not to have started a 20K thread. I may have forgotten because I've been behind...

Well. Day 12 is the day our Daily Word Target graph reaches 20,000. Congrats to all who have reached this prestigious landmark!

(I personally intend to be there by the time I go to sleep tonight, Muse willing.)
Longmont Carpool to Boulder Mid-November Party

Cheryl (Aenai) is willing to drive to Boulder for the party onthe 13th from Longmont. I will be riding with her. She has room for 2 others, possibly 3. We are coming from southwest Longmont. If you can meet us somewhere close to Niwot or Nelson and Airport road in Longmont, that would be good. If not, let's talk!

Also, if you already plan to drive from Longmont to Boulder for the party, let us know. Perhaps we can have a caravan.
