(ST)Daily Noveling Briefs

Another new thing this year. In putting the NPNP Kit HQ sent me last year to good use, I'll be posting up each day one of the daily short pep talks from the Kit. They're designed to provide "daily encouragement and insight for your noveling adventure."(Chris Baty, No Plot? No Problem! Novel Writing Kit). So read and enjoy!

Week One - Brief 1:

Green Lights, From Here to the Horizon

The first day. A blank page. And a slight panic about starting the book off on the right foot. But you know what? There are no wrong feet. Take a tip from freewheeling graphic design guru Bruce Mau on the subject of beginnings:

"Not knowing where to begin is a common form of paralysis. Begin anywhere."

Week One - Brief 2:

Create Your Clay

Writing a novel is like working with clay. You first create a rough shape, then massage that shape into something beautiful, such as an ashtray or a fearsome army of worms. Unlike potters, though, who can simply buy clay at the art supply store, novelists have to pull off the supernatural feat of creating their clay with their minds. It's an amazing accomplishment, really, and it's also why postponing judgment of your work until the end of your first draft is so important. What you started producing yesterday is noveling clay - valuable, essential, and invariably lumpy. Its beauty will grow as you work it.
(ST)Important Notice

Important Notice – Okay guys, important stuff first. Last year this forum was an all-ages forum, which basically meant we had to keep ourselves G-rated. Whether this will happen this year I'm not sure, but just to keep it's safe let's continue that mindset all right? I know some of us are older folks, but we do get youngin's around. So just keep that in mind folks, okie dokie? :)
(ST) Secrets to Staying on Track

In the Introductions thread, Firecrackergirl asked about secrets of staying on track and finishing.

Perhaps we could all share our personal secrets, strategies and tactics for keeping on track and achieving 50K?

My "secrets" include:

1. Write every day, no matter what. Even if it's a crazy day and I don't have much time to write, writing a couple of hundred words still maintains the feeling of forward motion.

2. Do two or three short writing sessions each day rather than one long session. If I sit down 3 times and write 600 words each time, I've exceeded my day's quota! But if I wait till 10 at night and then say to myself, "OK, Gale, now you HAVE to write 1667 words before you go to bed", I'm likely to get overwhelmed.

3. I try to end every session in the middle of a paragraph, or better yet, in the middle of a sentence. Then, when I come back to it, the first few words are easy: I just have to finish the sentence/paragraph. This was, I believe, Hemingway's technique.

4. I give myself permission to write material that is lame, wooden or crappy. Often, when I've begun with a sentence or two that is just SAD, then I'm back in the mood and keep on with better material. And sometimes, what I thought would be bad turns out, on re-reading, to be better than I expected.

5. Write every day, no matter what.

Anybody else care to share their secrets? About how to keep writing, that is! *grins*
(ST) Donating When You're Broke

NaNo is free to participate in (yay!), and no one is obliged to make a donation. But keeping the servers functioning and sending out swag to all the regions around the world does cost money.

Perhaps, like me, you find that money is tight this year.

Here's a news article that Chris Baty posted on the site early in October, about ways to help out, even if you're broke:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/node/1005775

I'm going to try the Goodsearch option, as I do a lot of searching while I'm writing.
(ST)Publishing Scams - Educate Yourself!

Reposted for all of us. I know many people use NaNo as a means to help them finish manuscripts they intend to publish (myself included), so it's just as important to know what to watch out for once you're ready for that step. Also, a lot of scammers like to prey on you during November as well, so do keep that in mind.

_____________________

Beware Publishing Scams and Sneaky People (taken from Amber the Librarian's page on the YWP site with some minor changes)

NaNoWriMo is all about encouraging people do things they would have thought were impossible. People have sold their NaNo-novels (after letting their inner editor out to check spelling and clean up consistency errors). Therefore, it is perfectly reasonable that people would want to sell their NaNo-novels.

But be careful. The world of publishing is, for the most part, made up of honest editors who want to give writers money for being brilliant (because then the editor gets to make money off the brilliant books), and agents, who want to earn their fifteen percent by convincing the editors that their clients’ books are indeed brilliant.

However (and it’s a big 'however'), some people want to cut out the whole selling books part and make money off the writer. They can do this in various unethical ways, and like most forms of fraud, these literary hucksters are getting more sophisticated all the time. Always look over any contract you’re thinking of signing and if you don't have a lawyer, give it to a friend to look at as well. It's up to you to protect yourself, too, by learning all you can.

Be especially leery of:

* Anyone who wants to charge you money up front, especially a reading fee.
* Anyone who wants to send you to a paid editing service or charge for editing your manuscript.
* Anyone who wants you to buy something before they will publish your book.
* Anyone who offers you a “co-publishing” contract.
* Anyone who contacts you first, offering to publish your work.

Resources:

The most important site to look at is Writer Beware, a free service provided by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA)

Preditors and Editors is a fairly extensive list of reputable people to send your work to, and of scams.

Most (though not necessarily all) reputable agents will be listed with the Association of Author’s Representatives.

Just in case you’re also a poet, Poetry Scams for info on some common poetry publishing scams.

These things do happen. Read three stories at http://www.writing-world.com/rights/scams.shtml - Writing World and of course get more links there.
----------

Ziggi's Writing Experiment

Quoted from: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/2011059

'So, I was sitting in the land of great ideas and my mind wandered to this webby that I was reading that said 'The sure fire way of getting your book published is to grab a best seller, get the plot, write down the plot in one sentence, and use that to write your book'
Now, see the theory behind this is that the plot has already become a bestseller and everyone thinks of different things from the same sentence, so you'll defs end up with a totally new book with an awesome plot.

I was just wondering how true this fact actually is. So, here I came up with an experiment, all I need are participants.

The rules are as followed:
We pick a book (possibly one of use goes to the library and picks up a random novel) that none of us have read.
The synopsis is posted.
That is the only reference you have and you have to work off it.
You can change mediums (novel, short story, novella, script (movie, TV, radio) or even a comic book)
And you can change genres.

Change anything else you like (characters, setting, mood) as long as the general plot is the same.
I'm sure all of us are smart enough to do it.

Anyone interested in my little experiment?'

I posted it in the Life After Nano forum, but I've decided to post it in here, too for you lovely lot:) What's writing without you guys, really? (I've no idea it's been so long). So, run on over if y'all are interested in participating. I'm, hopefully, going over to the library tomorrow to pick up the synopsis, but we still need to pick a book none of us have read from that pile.

Hopefully we'll start by the end of the week.

Hoping to see some of you there,
Ziggs

I've had a pretty good time at julno the past few years - it's a small event, like janno or april fool's, but has nice boards and so on.

The only thing is, they're firm about the 50k, and what with my freelance programming gig getting a bit more pressured I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. Count myself lucky to be ready to squeak in with my 40k for stringmo. But I'm certainly going to give this a try! Anyone with me?
I suppose I should let you all know what happened

For the few that might care why I dropped out of nano 07 and went silent all these months and what I've been doing (if you can even remember me)

long story short in the last week of November (near my 19th birthday for the record) I got a bad case of the flu. I tried to write and id get hallucinations from the fever (it was a bad flu).

After I recovered I tried to continue, when I read the book so far I found I didn't like how it was going. I love the universe and the settings and events, but I think that writing is not the format for it, I'm thinking about working on that later.

Since then I've just tried to work, lose weight and get money for school. I have tuition thankfully, and have lost ~100 pounds since you guys last saw me. I actually just got laid off from my job today :( but nonetheless, life has been relatively content and I just forgot about this little community. I'd definitely like to come back and get my writing in gear so I can make a comeback for Nano '08, try and work on something new. I got one idea I'd like to save for November, but something interesting always comes to me so I will get working on it soon.

FWG if you still go to write-ins and I can tag along again I'd greatly appreciate it. If you have any questions, comments, ideas, or general messages I'm still around. My MSN is still around and I answer email quickly.

Anyone care to update on what I missed?
Open mic at the Skydragon

Every Thursday at 9 pm, at the Skydragon Center on King William (across from Jackson, and Pepper Jack's) there's an open mic night where musicians, poets, and...well, anyone willing to go up and speak their mind gather.

If any of you are interested in reading some of your stuff to an audience, this would be a good place to be. Everyone is pretty laid back, and very supportive.

Hopefully I'll see you there.
TOPIC FOR OPEN DISCUSSION

Hi all!!! Gear up for a long message here...

NB. (note well) First of all, I'm not trying to throw stones here. Please don't take the following message in a negative way:

At the end of NaNo I was so glad that many of us wanted to continue meetings. New friendships were burgeoning and writing buddies solidified.

Unfortunately, in the past while we have sort of degraded out of a pure writing group into something more chat-related. While I am at times part of this, a small group of us discussed the issue and decided we would try to quiet down a large portion of the time to allow writing to take place.

For some of us, the write-ins are the only time to get some PEACE and QUIET to do writing (sorry about the caps, just think of them as quietly emphasized). Myself included, especially during Script Frenzy while we have new members and serious work going on, we need to focus on that and be more mature about what is going on.

I hope this is coming off clearly. As I said, I have been part of the chatty-kathy group myself, but, understanding that this is primarily a writing meeting, let's really focus on writing and leave the conversation and general topics to the end.

If, for example, we have a meeting from 1-3 feel free to stay after three and have personal chat at that time.

OBVIOUSLY there will be moments where a question about writing comes up and this leads to laughter, but let's try to focus our discussions on the writing.

I am only speaking for myself here. I desperately want to keep our writing group going, but that being said, we need to focus a bit more, in my opinion, on the writing. We can always meet up in small groups at other times for personal visits.

I'm sorry if I sound like a hall monitor but my sincere intention is to keep the writing group going strong and to provide a place where good writing can take place.

Rhonda.
Oh, noes!

:-( As I was sitting at 'work' and cross-stitching, or attempting my homework (not sure which) I got a brilliant idea for this year's Nano. Normally, this is a good idea, but as it is only April, I find myself saddened.
What I'm probably going to do is attempt it as like a Maymo, but those never work and I kinda like this idea. Oh wells, gotta conentrate on my screnzy for the moment, anyway. I'll sit on my novel idea for awhile and do some research (as it is a historical novel) in the meantime:-)
Thought I should share this with y'all (even though no one comes on here any more:P)

P.S. 37 pages into my second ep of screnzy:-)
SCRIPT FRENZY CROSSOVER

Hey all!

Chris and I are going to be Co-MLs over at www.scriptfrenzy.org for the month of April. We would love you to join. What is the Frenzy all about, you say?

From the site:

Script Frenzy is an international writing event in which participants attempt the daring feat of writing 100 pages of scripted material in the month of April. As part of a donation-funded nonprofit, Script Frenzy charges no fee to participate; there are also no valuable prizes awarded or "best" scripts singled out. Every writer who completes the goal of 100 pages is victorious and awe-inspiring and will receive a handsome Script Frenzy Winner's Certificate and web icon proclaiming this fact.

Even those who fall short of the word goal will be applauded for making a heroic attempt. Really, you have nothing to lose—except that nagging feeling that there's a script inside you that may never get out.

The 5 Basic Rules of Script Frenzy

      1) To be crowned an official Script Frenzy winner, you must write a script (or multiple scripts) of at least 100 total pages and verify this tally on ScriptFrenzy.org.

      2) You may write individually or in teams of two. Writer teams will have a 100-page total goal for their co-written script or scripts.

      3) Script writing may begin no earlier than 12:00:01 AM on April 1 and must cease no later than 11:59:59 PM on April 30, local time.

      4) You may write screenplays, stage plays, TV shows, short films, comic book and graphic novel scripts, adaptations of novels, or any other type of script your heart desires.

      5) You must, at some point, have ridiculous amounts of fun.

We will be joining the script frenzy write ins for Hamilton with our regular write-ins, so no extra time required. Some of you may want to write in teams. I think that sounds like so much fun.

Let us know if you have any questions, we hope to see you in our forum over at the site.

THANKS!!

Rhonda.

PS. No write-in scheduled for this week :( since it is Easter. I may do an impromptu one Saturday though, as I have no life.
For those who 'just don't feel welcome'

We suggested at the write-in today that we needed a new post. Some of us are scroll lazy and wouldn't mind a new post to continue writing posts in.

Sorry to those loving the four pages of the last post.

Please don't shun this lonely, new post. It wants to feel welcomed into the NaNo home of the Hammerwrimos...

SATURDAY FEB 23: CAFE DANEVA 1:00-3:00
SUNDAY MARCH 2: CAFE DANEVA 2:00-5:00

From Lyonnaise:

The Cafe is located across from Zarky's and the Concession theatre and beside the Royal Bank and library on Concession Street.

If you are driving (coming from downtown), it is the first street (on your left) after Upper Wentworth!

If you are taking the bus, you have the choices of THREE buses: Upper Gage, Upper Sherman, and Upper Wentworth.

The Upper Gage and Upper Sherman stop in front of Zarky's and you just have to cross the street.

If you are taking the Upper Wentworth, get off the bus BEFORE it turns onto Upper Wentworth and keep walking along Concession. The cafe is less than a minute in front of you.
NaNo adjunct free writing course

Hey all,

As you know I teach writing and literature at the local college. After some prodding from fellow NaNo junkies I decided to run a free Short Story Writing class online this Spring.

Well, I actually did it and we are actually doing it. It is (loosely) six sessions long (not necessarily 6 weeks, but six sessions) with six assignments and a separate short story work.

I would be happy to include any of you if you are interested. Send me a NaNo mail with your email and I'll send you some details and please check out my webpage

Off-Season Write-Ins/Meet-Ups

So, we seem to have agreed to meet once a month for a write-in/meet-up.

Welestra and I are going to keep trying for a room at the Library, but in the meantime it seems best if we keep meeting at Infusions, as that is familiar to us, and the servers like us!

We agreed at the TGIO to meet this coming Saturday, Dec 8, from 1-3.

We also agreed that we would each bring a small writer-related gifty -- $5. or less -- for a random present exchange. If you want, I'll see if I can figure out a passing game of some kind to make it all truly random.

Of course, if anyone, for whatever reason, doesn't want to participate in the gift exchange, they are still welcome to come to the gathering!

Looking forward to seeing you all then!
I'm writing a short story.

I am. For a friend as a christmas pressie because that's how cheep I am. I'm gunna start it in a notebook since my lappy got taken away (I miss it ever so much) and Stargate is coming on TV in 20 minutes. Then, I'll type it out later today.

I've really no idea what I'm going to write. It's going to be realistic (like what happens from day to day, unlike the sci-fi I usually write) and I only have the characters from the dream I had last night (which was awesome by the way).

I'm posting this here because I need an editor (since the pressie is for my *current* editor). Someone to read it and correct all the horrible mistakes I make (and, trust me, there are a lot of them). I'll post more about the plot when I know about it to see who's interested.

I also need y'all to keep me writing it:-P It's only a short story, so I say gimme a week and if it's still not done, just badger me until I write faster:-P

Hope December isn't too much of a let down for the rest of you (I know it was for me my first year),
Ziggi

Other Writing Contests

At the Saturday write-in, there was a request for me to post a list of some of the other writing contests that I know of.

______________________________________________
NaNoWriYe (National Novel Writing Year), known as WriYe
http://nanowriye07.suddenlaunch3.com/index.cgi

This is the year-long contest. They had us organized into “clubs”, depending on how many words we were aiming to write in the year. ChrisK0 and I were both in the “400-600K Club”. There was a club for people 50-100K, 100-200K, etc., all the way up to the one for the wackos attempting to write more than a million words in the year.

______________________________________________
JanNoWriMo (January Novel Writing Month), known as JanNo
http://www.ymakadomain.com/janno/

In the January contest, you can set your own word-count goal, and most of us were working to finish our NaNo novels. This is a smaller site (only 200 members this past January), and I really enjoyed it. We had running challenges to keep us on track with our word counts, had some really good conversations about writing, and also did some critiquing of one another’s work. The site had a problem in the summer time, and so there’s nothing there now but the home page, but Tia (the administrator) assures us that it’ll be back up in early December.

______________________________________________
Write Here, Right Now (February).

I don’t have a link for this one, but it was sponsored by a Scottish newspaper. The goal was to write 1K per day, and the newspaper sent out daily inspirational e-mails to the people who registered. There were no on-line forums for it, so Tia created a sub-forum for it on the JanNo site. I expect that if you check the JanNo site in mid-January, you’ll find people talking about it.

______________________________________________
NaNoEdMo (National Novel Editing Month), known as EdMo
http://www.nanoedmo.net/xoops/

This is the March contest, and the goal is to spend 50 hours editing your novel. They organized us into regions that corresponded to the NaNo regions, but there were so few Canadians doing it that we all ended up in the Alberta region, which was modded by Karalianne, the NaNo ML for Calgary.

______________________________________________
April Fools, known as, well, April Fools
http://aprilfoolsnovels.com/forum/index.php

This is one of the most fun contests, in my opinion. The smilies are active: they bounce, they rant, they dodge, they zip off the page. You set your own writing goal, and all forms of writing (fiction, poetry, school-work, etc.) can be counted. Very good for the students! When April starts, each person creates their own progress thread, and other people post to cheer and encourage. I had a blast on April Fools, and I found, at the end of the month, that they had made me a mod. *rolls eyes*

______________________________________________
Script Frenzy
http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/

This is the June script-writing (screenplays and stageplays) contest sponsored by Chris Baty, the founder of NaNo. I didn’t do it, but the people who did had a really good time, I think. The requirement is 25K, I think, rather than 50K, and they let people collaborate.

______________________________________________
JunNoStringMo (June Novel Stringing Month), known as StringMo
http://stringingwords.creativemindwebdesign.com/news.php

In June a lot of people did Script Frenzy, but some wanted to keep working on their novels. So, misaditas, Rinelle and I, who operate a year-round writers’ site called StringingWords, offered StringMo. As with April Fools, all forms of writing could be counted. Like most sites, StringingWords has trouble with spambots, and so all memberships are personally verified: this means that there’s a bit of a delay (usually only a matter of hours) before your membership is activated.

______________________________________________
JulNoWriMo (July Novel Writing Month), known as JulNo
http://julnowrimo.thewrigro.com/

I didn’t do this one, as I was at the cottage (located in The Land Of No Internet), but some people find that this is their favourite one of the whole year.

______________________________________________
AugNoWriMo (August Novel Writing Month), known as AugNo
http://augnowrimo.proboards85.com/index.cgi

This contest is sponsored by Erin, who’s a participant in NaNo, StringingWords, WriYe, April Fools, etc. I registered for it, but then I went back to the cottage and didn’t finish.

_____________________________________________
As ChrisK0 will also doubtless attest, the neat thing about doing these contests (besides, obviously the support and encouragement to keep writing) is the opportunity to make friends with folks from all around the world.

These are the ones that I know (or know of). There are other contests, but I’ll let the people who know them better post about them.

Life Beyond Nano

Gale told me to make this thread yesterday.
Last year, Gale, Viorica, and I (Clair, too, usually)got together once a month and had 'write-ins' (actually we just sat around Gale's house talking, mostly).
This year, though, there are a lot more people interested in getting together (and anyone whose ever been to one knows) and we were talking about getting together after November as just a writer's group and encourage each other on our writing projects we are doing over the year.
So, this thread is to discuss meeting times and places for those of us who are interested!

November will be over before we know it, so let's plan this bash early! At the KO I did mention the Mandarin. What do you guys think? And when do we want to have this bash? First week of December? Second week?
Hamilton-Calgary-Delaware FRIENDLY Taunting Thread

OK, gang, when we agreed to compete with one another, I imagined much more taunting. If this thread words, it's going to appear in all 3 regions.

Let the taunting begin!

BTW: Hamilton is kicking both of your butts, Calgary and Delaware! We have a four amazing writers who are all closing in on 50K, and I know that at least 2 of them are planning on going far beyond that. One of them is my co-ML, Welestra, who is working on 3 novels. She writes 1667 words on each of them. Each day. She is our secret weapon! OK, not so secret now, because I told you about it.
The Last Sentence You Wrote

This is a game that's being played in the main forums, apparently, but I thought it might be fun to have here in our little corner of NaNo paradise as well. It's quite simple. You just report what the last sentence was that you wrote. Mine, as I prepare to pack it in for the night, was . . .

"Well, now you get to prove it," Thorne replies pertly.
