The only novel I've seen this custom featured in was set in colonial America, but did it originate there as...an adaptation to the harsh New World winters? Or was it brought over from England? When did it die out?

You can probably do some minimal research at your local library and find the answer. I don't know, it's not something I've investigated before. It would be fascinating to put in a book, though.
