THis is my first novel,
CHAPTER ONE
“No way,” I shouted, “Did he win?”
“You should’ve seen him,” Lina replied, “Kian’s son was amazing at the magic duels. His style of using fire spells to throw off his opponents was unbelievable.”
I closed my gray book of wind and waved my staff over it. The book flashed very bright and then disappeared instantly.
“So how did you sneak out?” I asked.
“Ah you know teleporting and all.”
I banged my fist on my desk. “You’re so lucky. Tory made me study –I hate being one of The Destined.”
“Don’t hate it,” Lina said, “just use it to your advantage.”
I nodded my head. Even though I had been ordered to stay in my room and study, everything was all for a good cause. I looked Lina directly in her sparkling red eyes and she gazed back in mine.
I was glad to have her destined with me. It made things less complicated and much more fun. “You don’t want to be like those humans, full of hatred and war. Remember what Kian told us. A Phillisin who hates not dies with great honor.”
I smiled.
“So, do you want to sneak to the human world and maybe go see a movie?”
“I hope you still have your blond wig and some contacts,” Lina said, “you know humans don’t have white hair and red eyes.”
“Wait here,” I replied. I dashed into the closet and searched for the wig. I threw around some clothes, search through stacks of human-brand watches and collectibles until I came upon my blond wig. “Found it.”
All of a sudden, I heard mom’s voice say, “Jake, are you studying? You know Kian is expecting you to know spells thirty-two through forty.”
“I’ll see you later Jake,” Lina whispered and then pulled out a green wand from her back pocket. She then said, “Teleport eniachio.” Right before my eyes, Lina vanished.
“Being sixteen sucks,” I said under my breath and then wiggled my fingers. My gray book appeared back in its place. I quickly opened it back to the page where I left off and skimmed through the spells Mom mentioned.
She appeared through the doorway right on cue.
“I know you’re mad about the barrier, Jake,” she said, “but it was for your own good. You must learn those spells.”
“Yeah,” I said, “For the fiftieth time, I get it.”
“Well study some more, because Kian’s wife should be here soon.” With her white wand, mom used the exact spell as Lina and vanished right before my eyes.
About a few minutes later, I heard a voice call my name. It was Tory. She walked through the doorway and stopped in front me. She was dressed in her uniform which was a long white robe with a golden star shaped badge pinned on the outside. She had her blue wand grasped in her hand as if she had just fought in a duel.
“Master Jake,” she said, “Are you ready to return to headquarters?”
I stood up from my chair and said, “Yeah, I’m ready.”
“Very well,” she said and then waved her blue wand. “The barrier has been removed. You may go see Kian now.”
“Finally,” I replied, “Studying bites.” I grabbed my staff from off my desk and gave it a wave. It glowed rapidly and then I found myself in front of the headquarters building.
When I entered the building, Kian and Lina signaled for me to join them.
“Hello Jake,” Kian greeted. He was a dark-skinned wizard with long black dreadlocks. Because of his hair condition, Kian wasn’t born with white hair; however he did have the red eyes. Kian was a legend in Yuri Kingdom. He became the leader of YKA headquarters centuries before we were born, for defeating some creature that attacked Yuri Kingdom.
“Hey,” I said. “So do we get to do our first mission or what– because I’m tired of training?”
Kian grinned.
“When you’re one of the destined, you’re going to always be in training.” Kian signaled for us to follow him. He led us down a long hallway, past squad M’s room and into a room filled with portals. The portals looked like large brightly colored spheres of light.
“If I were you, I’d change into my uniform,” Kian said.
Waving my staff over my clothes, I said, “Uniform espectio.” My t-shirt and jeans flashed brightly then changed into a white robe. Lina was already in her white robe, which meant we could proceed on. I felt a rush of excitement flow through my blood. I couldn’t wait to start my very first mission.
“Your first mission is to arrest two Sapharios named Jobe and Wes. They are wanted for illegally invading the human world and smuggling drugs.”
I shook my head in disappointment.
“Those two Sapharios must be real idiots.”
“Actually they’re not,” Lina commented, “I’ve heard a–”
“Enough talk,” Kian interrupted, “follow me to the portal of Desert Fields.” Kian led us pass a few portals, down a curvy hall and into a room with another set of spheres. The spheres took on many different colors. Kian pointed at a green one and ordered us to go inside. When we stepped inside, we found ourselves in a completely different area.
The portal had warped us to a large grassy forest. Not a single sign of life was nearby. We were very far from our destination, but walking was better than getting caught in an ambush.
“You ready to get our first arrest?” Lina asked.
“Oh yeah,” I said, “lets hurry up an get a move on.”
After hours of walking, we finally reached our destination when we spotted two beings tying up some bags with thick ropes and labeling them. One of them was about my height and the other short. Their mouths were wide open revealing incredibly large fangs. They had somewhat of a human-like appearance if you didn’t count the paleness, piercing yellow eyes and the spikes coming out of their foreheads.
Lina and I attempted to sneak on them however; one of them detected our presence and shouted, “Who’s there?”
We decided to confront them.
“You two are under arrest for smuggling,” I announced.
“Don’t you agent pests have something better to do,” the tall Saphario said.
I heard the short one mumble something in their native language.
I aimed my staff at them and said, “Hands in the air.”
They did nothing. But when Lina pointed her wand and threatened them, the Sapharios jerked their hands in the air so fast; I almost thought they had injured themselves.
While wiggling my fingers, I said, “en exapansin.” A pitch of bright light flashed inside of my hand which formed into two pairs of handcuffs. I tossed a pair to Lina. “Cuff the short one.”
Just before I had the chance to cuff him, the tall Saphario made a run for it.
“Lina, cuff shorty,” I said quickly, “I’m going after the running one.”
Running as fast as I could, I pursued the Saphario. I wasn’t planning on letting him get away. I wasn’t going to let my first mission become a failure expecially after all the training I’ve been through.
He began to throw weird green darts back at me in attempt to slow me down. But even though my chest felt like it was filled with flames, I continued to proceed forward.
Finally after a while, the Saphario came to a stop, realizing I wasn’t going to let him get away.
“You’re getting on my nerves, agent,” he snarled.
“Oh stop using human phrases,” I said, “it’s embarrassing. Now hold your hands up or I’ll make you.”
The Saphario grinned.
“Well, what are you waiting for?” I said as I pointed my staff at him. “Smuggling drugs to the human world is way out of control. That’s why they have some many dead ones there now.”
“Its nice isn’t it,” the Saphario chuckled.
“Shut up,” I yelled, “now hold your hands into the air or else.”
All of a sudden, the Saphario charged toward me and connected his fist with my jaw. The force of the blow was so strong, it sent me flying backwards and landing on my back. I slowly stood up from the ground. I felt the anger simmer inside of me. I aimed my staff at him and said, “Wind espectio.” A glow from my staff and then a huge blast of wind knocked him on his back. I felt much more satisfying delivering payback to my opponent, then letting him have his way. He sprung up and tackled me to the ground. Then he started punching me wildly. Blow after blow, I felt myself getting closer to unconsciousness. So with all of my strength, I kicked him off me. Breathing hard, I strained to stand up. The saphario came after me once again. He threw a heavy punch at me, but I managed to dodge it. I quickly aimed my staff at him and said, “Wind espectio.” It blew him backwards but not much.
“Not having fun, are you agent?” he snickered, “well we sapharios have special abilities ourselves.”
He opened his mouth wide and actually stuck his hand inside. Then he pulled out a long red sword. “We can store just about anything inside of us, you should die for it.” He ran towards me and attempted to slice me. Using my staff I blocked the first blow and held the position until he finally pulled back. He swiftly swung at me and managed to cut at my arm. I screamed in pain as the blood rushed out of my arm like a river. He swung at me again, but pushing myself to the limit and using my bleeding arm, I managed to block his sword with my staff. The saphario laughed and into then swung his blade at me again. I blocked the blow once again and held the position until he finally pulled back again. I slowly walked backward with my staff aimed at him.
“Oh, where’s your arrogance?” he said, “ha! You can’t beat me, I’m invincible.”
“I’ll show you invincible,” I said. I attempted to run toward him, but the pain in my arm was too strong at this point. I dropped to the ground holding my bleeding arm.
“You ready for your death,” the saphario said. He then walked toward me with his blade grasped tightly in his hands. “Time to kiss your ass good night,” he laughed then lunged the blade at me. I closed my eyes thinking I was finished, but the stab never came. When I opened my eyes, Lina was holding her wand at the neck of the saphario.
“No Lina, run!” I screamed, but she refused to move.
The saphario grinned devilishly and then threw a sudden punch at Lina with his bladeless hand, knocking her onto the ground. He turned back to me and aimed the blade at my chest.
“As I was saying,” he said, “goodnight.” He lunged the blade downwards at my chest but I quickly regained my common sense and rolled over. The pained in my arm increase.
All of sudden a blast of water hit the saphario and knocked him on his back. Using that chance, I sprung up from the ground, grabbed my staff and aimed it at him.
I tossed a pair the pair of handcuffs I had earlier to Lina and said, “Cuff him before he gets up.”
However it was too late, the saphario jumped up from the ground, with his sword, before I had the chance to make a threat.
He aimed it at me and said, “Let’s go.”
“I’ll take care of him,” Lina said.
“No, hold your spells,” I said and then aimed my staff at the saphario’s sword. The saphario swung his blade at me but I blocked the blow and then pulled back. This time I went for a hit but he also blocked mine and held the position. I pulled back and quickly swung at his legs. My attack was successful. He fell on the ground and dropped his blade. I immediately learned that sapharios cannot move too fast under pressure and that their legs were kind of like a weak spot. I ran toward him and swung my staff at his head, but suddenly a giant arm came out of his mouth and punched me away. Man was this freakish. I never had seen anything like this before. I pointed my staff at the arm and said, “Wind pound espectio.” The blast of air caused the arm to wince, however the arm wasn’t down for the count. It suddenly stretched out like elastic, grabbed me and slammed me on the ground. I almost passed out. I struggled to stand up. It wasn’t an easy task. I nearly strained my guts out just to get on my feet. The arm withdrawn into the saphario’s stomach. The saphario stood up and grinned.
“Awe,” he said, “ did you really think you could just defeat that easy.” He laughed maniacally and then picked up his red sword. He charged toward me and swung his blade at me. Instead of blocking the attack, I jumped backward and pointed my staff at him.
“Wind spike espectio,” I said. My staff shimmered and then a grey spike made of air fired from it and hit the saphario. He yelled in agony and then ran at me again. He managed to slice at my shoulder. I bit my lip to suck in the pain and fired another wind spike at the saphario. The spike actually went through his chest, but the saphario wouldn’t go down. He put the red sword back in his mouth and swallowed it. Then he dug his hand back inside and pulled out another blade that was twice as large. This blade was silver and had spikes on the bottom of it.
“It’s time to finish this,” he said, “your time is up.”
I grasped my staff tightly and said, “Fine, let’s go.”
We charged toward each other and collided our weapons together, blocking each other’s attacks. We both held the positions. My staff was now burning hot. I had to grasp it tightly just to hold on to it. I pulled back and swung at the saphario’s leg and successfully knocked him down. Then I swung wildly at his legs causing him to scream with every blow. I stepped back and fired a wind spike at his legs and that’s when he passed out. I fell to the ground and rested in satisfaction. My mission was completed.
When we arrived back to the area, where we first spotted the Sapharios, Kian was waiting for us.
“Good work,” Kian said, “your first mission is a success.”
He snapped his fingers and made a black portal appear before us. He then shoved Lina’s cuffed Saphario inside. My cuffed Saphario didn’t seem to like the idea. He laughed maniacally.
“It doesn’t matter what you do to us,” he said, “our race still has the gemstone of light –so who cares?”
Kian shoved him into the portal and then pointed his staff at it.
“Disappear,” he said. The portal shimmered and then vanished. “I’m sure they’ll have fun in prison.”
“Kian, what’s the gemstone of light?” Lina asked, beating me to the question.
“Don’t worry about it,” Kian replied, “That’s for advanced agents to know only. You two may be destined, but you’re still rookies.”
I wanted to smack him with my staff for calling me a rookie. Lina and I have been studying attack spells since we were first told that we were destined, but yet, he still called us beginners.
Kian waved his staff vertically and then said, “Portal espectio.”
A green sphere of light appeared before us. We stepped inside and were back at the headquarters.
